Merkel Maligned: IMF Board Attacks Euro Crisis Management - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Merkel Maligned: IMF Board Attacks Euro Crisis Management - SPIEGEL ONLINE | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it
The EU's bailout of Cyprus has elicited unusually frank and vehement criticism from the finance experts grouped in the IMF's Executive Board.

Paulo Nogueira Batista, 58, is a fan of classical music, a connoisseur of German literature and an advocate of straight talking. As executive director for his native Brazil and 10 smaller countries, he is a member of the Executve Board, the highest-ranking operational decision-making body of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

His counterparts from the United States and Europe have often witnessed the combative personality of this economist with wavy, salt-and-pepper hair, who attended a high school in Bonn for two years in his youth. Batista is one of the most persistent critics of Western dominance in the IMF.

He often derides the Washington-based organization, headed by French politician Christine Lagarde, as a "North Atlantic monetary fund," because, as he argues, Americans and Europeans are primarily interested in defending their interests and preventing emerging economies like Brazil from exerting their rightful influence in the fund. He resents the Europeans for increasingly availing themselves of the fund's assets to combat their euro crisis, even though they have enough money of their own. "The euro countries abuse their power within the IMF," Batista is fond of saying.

The Death of ‘Sustainability’ « NEW PHOENIX

The Death of ‘Sustainability’ « NEW PHOENIX | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it

This is a guest post by Glenn Hurrowitz, author and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy.

Can destroying a tropical rainforest be “sustainable”?

Well, according to a decision taken yesterday by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the major industry-NGO body, this greatest of environmental crimes is now officially “green.”

Palm oil plantations have driven the destruction of more than 30,000 square miles of tropical forest in Indonesia and Malaysia alone, pushing species like orangutans and Sumatran rhinoceroses and elephants to the edge of extinction. It’s the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Southeast Asia, and has propelled Indonesia to be the world’s third largest climate polluter behind only China and the United States.

Nonetheless, at its Extraordinary General Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, the RSPO formally rejected longstanding calls from member companies, scientists and nonprofit organizations to stop certifying as “sustainable” palm oil produced through deforestation and other environmentally damaging practices like destruction of ultra carbon rich peatland and use of highly poisonous chemicals like the notorious paraquat, which is linked to kidney failure, respiratory failure, skin cancer, and Parkinson’s disease.

More short-haired bumblebees are to be reintroduced to the countryside in Kent.

The species of bee was once widespread across the south of England but vanished in 1988.

Last year, 50 queens were collected in southern Sweden and released onto the RSPB's Dungeness nature reserve.

More short-haired bumblebees, currently in quarantine to check for parasites, are due to join them on Monday.

The RSPB's nature reserve at Dungeness is home to most of the UK's seven species of rare bumblebee.

True collaboration is hard work but a small group of systems thinkers, mappers and innovators could make all the difference..

The reason systems experts are so valuable is that they not only understand the inter-connection of issues, important in itself, but also recognise the power of group dynamics and of finding ways to encourage groups with competing interests to find common ground....

...we need to recognise we don't really understand any more the complexity of the current system, or how it dynamically evolves over time. We also have no prototypes for an alternative system so have no clear sense of where we are exactly aiming for.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/sustainable-business/blog/systems-experts-scale-and-speed-sustainability

Village management turns around Nepal's forests

Village management turns around Nepal's forests | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it
Local control has improved woodlands, cut carbon emissions and created economic benefits

KATHMANDU (AlertNet) - When Reshma Kunda talks about the land surrounding her village, her voice is full of reverence.

“Our mountains and forests are like our gods. They give us grass, wood for fuel, water, medicines and food - everything we need for our lives,” says the farmer who lives in Godavari Kunda village, about 15 km (10 miles) southeast of the Kathmandu valley.  “In return, we owe them protection (and must) keep them safe for future generations.”

Other residents of Godavari Kunda agree. They are part of a movement that has seen local communities across Nepal take charge of forest management - conserving and restoring woodland to mitigate the effects of climate change. At the same time, they are receiving sustainable economic benefits.

Today, a quarter of Nepal’s forests are managed by nearly 20,000 community forest user groups (CFUGs), the first of which were established by non-governmental organisations in the 1980s.

EU tightens ban on shark finning

EU tightens ban on shark finning | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it
The EU tightens up an existing ban on "shark finning" - the practice of slicing off a shark's fins at sea for sale to Asian markets.

The ban for EU fishing crews has existed since 2003, but with special permits they were still allowed to remove the fins from shark carcasses.

Ministers have now agreed with MEPs to eliminate that legal loophole.

The Shark Trust campaign group says the EU exports 27% of the fins traded in Hong Kong - a major fin-trading centre.

Hong Kong accounts for more than half of all the fins traded worldwide, the group says. They are used in soups and traditional cures in Asia, where they are valued much more highly than the rest of the shark.

Finning is deemed cruel because the fins are often removed while the shark is still alive - it then drowns when it is thrown back into the sea.

A statement from the EU Council, which groups ministers from the 27 member states, said finning had contributed to a serious decline in shark populations.

It said that "with its policy of fins remaining attached, the EU will also be in a better position to push for shark protection at international level".

Scientists from Australia's University of Adelaide have identified a lake so pristine that they're calling it "God's bathtub."

Although typical freshwater ecosystems vary because of climate change and man's influences, Blue Lake on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland has remained largely unchanged for 7,500 years, according to a recent study.

The water is so clear researchers could see to the bottom -- 33 feet below.

"It's like God's bathtub," Cameron Barr, a researcher at the university and the study's lead author, told the Australian Associated Press (AAP). "It is beautiful. It is absolutely beautiful."

Via Karen O'Brien
Anne Caspari's comment, June 14, 6:51 AM
Paul Hawken has his own way with strong polarities in the environmental arena.

The data he comes up with through his extensive experience and research into facts and causes on environmental and societal issues is deeply shocking, disturbing, overwhelming. There is no denial or extenuation. He is looking right into the abyss and he has studied it thoroughly from all angles. Hawken takes the facts, connects the dots and to provides vital perspectives that help to reframe the context(s). With his vast unconventional body of wisdom, he helps re-enriching the global dialogue on climate change that somehow got reduced and flattened to a few polarized and often misinterpreted points.

In his talks he puts together facts and trajectories from; history, food, economy, energy, commerce, culture, science, and technology in order to re-install climate change and the state of the environment as the civilization issue that it really is. Funny thing, and so precious for anybody having to deal with pending global issues: after listening to all the dire facts he is able to lead the listener towards a different, inspiring sphere of influence. More subtle, powerful, touching on post-dialectic thinking. New openings. If you allow yourself to follow his lead and listen, you will be positively surprised and uplifted.

Paul Hawken comes to Oslo for a public lecture at Oslo University next Wednesday, 17:00 on reframing contexts on climate change - “The Reimagination of Carbon”. Free entry, limited seats. Do not miss it.

THE NEW CORPORATE COLONIALISM. Destruction of Life -- All In The Name Of "Growth"

THE NEW CORPORATE COLONIALISM. Destruction of Life -- All In The Name Of "Growth" | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it

May 26, 2013 Common Dreams

Multinational corporations are seizing and deforesting large tracts of  land in Indonesia.

This new "Corporate colonialism" is bringing farmer deaths, poverty, human rights violations and ecological catastrophe to Indonesia with little recourse for the local communities who suffer the effects of projects touted as "growth," the Guardian's John Vidal reports. In the match between corporate power and the poor in the archipelago, the number of conflicts is on the rise....

"These developments are classed as 'growth' but what we are seeing is the collapse of communities of fisherfolk or farmers and increasing poverty," he continues.  "We are exchanging biodiversity for monocultures, local economies for global ones, small-scale producers are becoming labourers and community land is becoming corporate. This is the direction we are going."

One problem for communities is the growing number of palm oil plantations, which, Henry Sarigih, founder of the Indonesian Peasant Union, says "has spawned a new poverty and is triggering a crisis of landlessness and hunger."... http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/05/26-0

The Return of Salmon | Farming, Forests, Water & Fishing (No Petroleum Added) | Scoop.it
After the careful removal of two large dams, salmon are returning to Washington's Elwha River.

As the last block of concrete was pulled from the riverbed, the Elwha River in the Olympic Mountains of Washington State flowed freely for the first time in over 100 years. The river was historically one of the most productive salmon streams for its size in the Pacific Northwest. Four hundred thousand salmon once swam its length each year but, in the century since the dam’s construction, that number had fallen to a few thousand.1 Within months of the dam’s removal, nature has rushed back: over 200 salmon have already returned. The prospect of a river teeming with silverbacked salmon weighing over 45 kilograms each may no longer remain a hazy memory of local Native American tribes.
