Smart Cities in Europe: Can public procurement be used as leverage to drive smart city solutions? | Environment, Forests, Water, Fishing, Farming | Scoop.it
Governments are huge purchasers of goods, services and infrastructure. Across the EU, the European Commission estimates that 14% of GDP is generated directly through public procurement…So, given that governments across Europe, both at the central and local level, want their cities to operate in a smarter way, why not leverage this abundant purchasing power to drive innovation?

Bottled Water Companies Pay Next to Nothing to Siphon Freshwater From Pristine Lake

Bottled Water Companies Pay Next to Nothing to Siphon Freshwater From Pristine Lake | Environment, Forests, Water, Fishing, Farming | Scoop.it
Environmentalists in New Zealand are increasingly angered that bottled water companies are extracting and exporting the country's pristine and finite freshwater sources for private profit—and paying very little for this privilege.

As the Guardian reported, Coca-Cola, "which has an annual revenue of over $60bn, last year paid NZ$40,000 to the local council for the right to extract up to 200 cubic meters of water a day" from Blue Spring in Putaruru, which is considered a national treasure.

'Devastating' coral loss in South China Sea - scientists - BBC News | Environment, Forests, Water, Fishing, Farming | Scoop.it
Scientists are warning of another "devastating" loss of coral due to a spike in sea temperatures.
They say 40% of coral has died at the Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea.
Nothing as severe has happened on Dongsha for at least 40 years, according to experts.
Anne Cohen of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, US, said the high water temperatures of 2015/16 were devastating for reef systems globally, including Dongsha.
Coral bleaching - where corals turn white and may die - was the worst on record for Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef in 2016.

Water Grabbing
An Atlas of Water - Watergrabbing

Water Grabbing<br/>An Atlas of Water - Watergrabbing | Environment, Forests, Water, Fishing, Farming | Scoop.it
What is the future of water? How much water is available? Who doesn’t have any?
“Watergrabbing – an Atlas of Water” aims to provide a framework for examining the current the global water situation. The project outlines a number of substantive issues for today’s world, which is increasingly subject to the heavy pressure of climate change. A targeted selection of countries illustrate examples of the major problems related to water systems: the impact of large dams, food sovereignty and the mining sector. Join us on this visual journey and learn about the concept of a common good and the human right to water, the connection between hoarding water and land, energy, conflicts over blue gold and excessive consumption. This is a tool for students, researchers and social workers, but also for the general public, and anyone who wants to quickly and immediately visualize the complex phenomena related to water.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the world’s biggest economies — the U.S. and China — dropped in 2016 and didn’t grow in Europe, showing that economic growth can occur without an increase in heat-trapping pollution, according to the latest emissions report from the International Energy Agency.

As in the previous two years, flat-lining global emissions were the result of a surge in renewable energy production, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, and structural changes in the global economy.
