Write Better JavaScript with Promises | Node.js | Scoop.it

You've probably heard the talk around the water cooler about how promises are the future. All of the cool kids are using them, but you don't see what makes them so special. Can't you just use a callback? What's the big deal? In this article, we'll look at what promises are and how you can use them to write better JavaScript.

"Mostly functional" programming does not work.

"Mostly functional" programming does not work. | Node.js | Scoop.it
There is a trend in the software industry to sell "mostly functional" programming as the silver bullet for solving problems developers face with concurrency, parallelism (manycore), and, of course, Big Data. Contemporary imperative languages could continue the ongoing trend, embrace closures, and try to limit mutation and other side effects. Unfortunately, just as "mostly secure" does not work, "mostly functional" does not work either. Instead, developers should seriously consider a completely fundamentalist option as well: embrace pure lazy functional programming with all effects explicitly surfaced in the type system using monads.

Reactive Google Maps Markers with Meteor JS

Reactive Google Maps Markers with Meteor JS | Node.js | Scoop.it

In this article I will write about how to implement the Google Maps API version 3 in Meteor JS to achieve reactive Google Maps Marker functionality. When we are done we will be able to add markers reactively to our Google Map app so when MongoDB gets hit with new Geolocation data we see the new markers added automagically.

In this article I will assume you already know how to setup a new Meteor.js project. I use a folder structure that has client, server, collections and lib in the root directory. The clients directory has views, components and a few other folders not needed for the scope of this article. My example app has collections already set up with data that contains latitude and longitude data which will be used to add the Google Maps Markers to the map.

Creating A Metrics Dashboard With Ember.js, Bootstrap, and Rails

Creating A Metrics Dashboard With Ember.js, Bootstrap, and Rails | Node.js | Scoop.it
Today we’re going to assemble the first pieces of this app by creating a Rails server, an Ember.js App and some basic Bootstrap styling. We want to be able to expose all of our stats from various internal and third party services with a consistent API so this server will primarily handle authentication and data transformation. This server could just as easily be written in Node.js or any language/framework, but for now we’ll stick with Rails.

Functional JavaScript

Functional JavaScript | Node.js | Scoop.it
Obviously there is a sizable group of developers that use functional paradigms in JavaScript day in and day out. I would say there is a much larger group of JavaScript developers that just don't really understand what that means.I believe this is a result of the fact that most languages used for server-side web development have roots in C, which most would agree is not a functional programming language. This series of blog posts is here to help others learn how to borrow some of the beauty of functional programming languages in the context of JavaScript.

AngularJS & Kendo UI using Angular Kendo with ASP.NET MVC 5, Web API & OData

AngularJS & Kendo UI using Angular Kendo with ASP.NET MVC 5, Web API & OData | Node.js | Scoop.it

With AngularJS and ASP.NET MVC, we now have an MVC pattern and architecture for both on the client and server. What do we do and/or how do we approach this? Well one can argue we don’t use any of the MVC architecture on the server and build out a full-fledged AngularJS front-end application and only use make async calls to Web API for all things that absolutely need to be on the server e.g. CRUD, workflows, business logic, etc.

Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this approach, and for the most part a lot of heavy front end SPA’s are built this way in ASP.NET MVC. However, with all the .NET, ASP.NET and AngularJS goodness, why not leverage the best of both worlds? Again, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with building a pure AngularJS application and only using Web API, but for this blog post we’ll go over patterns of using the best of both worlds along with integrating AngularJS with Kendo UI.

Learn Angular JS, Explained with Answers, Videos and Fiddles

Learn Angular JS, Explained with Answers, Videos and Fiddles | Node.js | Scoop.it

Having worked on various enterprise Angular projects our teams have been faced with myriad challenges to overcome and has quite a bit of “in the trenches” experience. I share what I can with other developers through my various blog posts, by answering questions on StackOverflow and through a large collection of JavaScript fiddles. I also realized early on that Angular is a very important library and began recording a video course to help others Master Angular JS. The course has grown to well over 8 hours of content (yes, a full DAY of Angular!) and there are still several lessons left to record. In this post I organize some of the content and resources I’ve created as a guide to help you link into information, code snippets, and other information that may help you build your Angular apps.
