Everything Teachers Need to Know about Chromebooks (9 Tutorials) ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Everything Teachers Need to Know about Chromebooks (9 Tutorials) ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | NLA | Scoop.it
Chromebooks are making gigantic inroads in the education sector. Several school districts here in Canada and the States are adopting them as teaching tools within classrooms. Their growing popularity among the education community is attributable not only to their reasonably cheap price but also to a host of excellent features that you can not find in other devices. Chromebooks are easier to handle, faster and more secure. They are also " instantly personalizable by each student or teacher, and easy to manage, making them an ideal solution for bringing the power of the web to your classrooms".

Narrated Slideshow – Screencast Tool Comparison

Narrated Slideshow – Screencast Tool Comparison | NLA | Scoop.it

A screencast is a digital recording of a computer screen with audio narration. Screencasts can include telestrator (‘John Madden pen’) annotations. Narrated slideshows include audio recordings synchronized to images without hand-drawn annotations.

Screencasts and narrated slideshows can be created with two kinds of tools:

1. Browser-based: Create an account on the website and use a modern web browser like Google Chrome or FireFox to record, save and share it.

2. Client-based: Download and install software on a computing device to record and save.

Helping Online Learners Succeed (Part 1)

Helping Online Learners Succeed (Part 1) | NLA | Scoop.it

"Many universities assume that because their students are part of the Facebook and Instagram generation, that they have the skills to be automatically successful online learners. This is a dangerous assumption as the high rates of attrition in online courses and MOOCs (as high as 90 percent in some cases) attest. Education institutions also assume that because students are eager online learners that they will understand and accept the new models of instruction and ways of working online or in blended environments. This is also dangerous assumption."

What is Critical Thinking? (Explained with Great Videos)

What is Critical Thinking? (Explained with Great Videos) | NLA | Scoop.it

In simple terms, it is the process of breaking down what you know and information you have, and then evaluating and critically analyzing it in order to make an informed decision without bias.

A critical thinker:

- Is open-minded and mindful of alternatives
- Desires to be, and is, well-informed
- Judges well the credibility of sources
- Identifies reasons, assumptions, and conclusions
- Asks appropriate clarifying questions
- Judges well the quality of an argument, including its reasons, assumptions, evidence, and their degree of support for the conclusion
- Can well develop and defend a reasonable position regarding a belief or an action, doing justice to challenges
- Formulates plausible hypotheses
- Plans and conducts experiments well
- Defines terms in a way appropriate for the context
- Draws conclusions when warranted – but with caution
- Integrates all of the above aspects of critical thinking

How Kids Lose Their Creativity As They Age (And How To Prevent It)

Celebrate diversity, be open, share, listen and learn...

Dr. Pat McGuire's curator insight, October 20, 2014 11:41 AM

When my children were small we spent a great deal of time being creative and playing the "what if" game to test out theories. That is not seen with children in my practice much anymore.  They are stuck in overly compartmentalized learning and playing.  Few of them know what to do if told to go outside.

We need to bring curiosity and creativity back into the forefront of child development and learning.  I see the loss of this as being as devastating as when children were told "Do it because I said so and don't ask questions."

What do you think?
