Failsafe diving with the new Poseidon Tech Rebreather | Poseidon

Poseidon introduces its new family member, the Poseidon Tech at Rebreather Forum 3 in Orlando, Florida. The world’s first rebreather to have a fully automatic bailout system, the Poseidon Tech features a redundant back-up rebreather with fully automatic switching. In brief, you can say it’s two rebreathers in one.

In the event of a malfunction, the Poseidon Tech’s safety system switches from the primary to secondary rebreather without missing a breath – or you missing a beat. With a secondary dive computer, nothing gets lost in the switch. This gives the diver time to evaluate the situation, enabling them to make better decisions. The diver can then make manual additions to the system, or leave the system in automatic mode.

But, two years after its discovery, experts have cleared at least 79 bottles, and 11 of them will be offered on the auction block on June 8 by French auction house Artcurial.

Florida Keys celebrate a decade of diving the Spiegel Grove

They also took time out to lay the ashes of Tom Maher, 54, a researcher who gathered economic data on the Spiegel Grove’s role as a dive attraction. Maher died last year of a heart attack and had requested the wreck as his final resting place.

Titanic: shipwreck falls under UNESCO protection

PARIS - The wreck of the Atlantic liner Titanic will this month come under UNESCO protection, as it has now lain at the bottom of the Atlantic for 100 years, the United Nations cultural body said Thursday.

The British liner sank in international waters and so comes under no state's protection but, after a century, wrecks fall under the jurisdiction of a 2009 UN Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.

Plastic in Pacific is changing ocean habitats, study shows - EarthSky

In a part of the ocean known as the North Pacific Gyre, human-produced plastic has increased 100-fold over the past 40 years, according to a new study. This is the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is not an actual floating island of garbage, but which is filled with floating bits of plastic, often fingernail-sized, mostly from the U.S. west coast and from the east coast of Asia.

The new study led by graduate student researcher Miriam Goldstein at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego indicates that the plastic in this part of the ocean has provided new habitats for some marine creatures, which in turn can be expected to create a subtle shift in the ocean food web.

The study was published May 9, 2012 in an online issue of the journal Biology Letters.
