Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | Nik Peachey | Scoop.it

This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Proud to have done some work on this for Google.

January Teacher Interview: Nik Peachey

January Teacher Interview: Nik Peachey | Nik Peachey | Scoop.it

Well this year I’ve set myself the goal of starting to write a series of books on technology. I’ve been writing about and training teachers to use technology in education for years now and I’ve always wanted to do a book for teachers. I’ve been approached by publishers a few times but I don’t want to do a book on technology that’s limited by black and white paper, so I’ve decided to try to raise the money to fund my own production of a series of eBooks.

Given the state of many of these courses, it’s no wonder that drop out rates for online learning are so high. And of course Moodle isn’t the only culprit. Many of the other commercially available LMS (learning management systems) and VLE (virtual learning environment) platforms aren’t doing any better.

You know, the most expensive things for a state are still

1) the education

2) the health care

If somehow new media can help, it goes here upon trillions of $$$ that could be saved. Like e.g. in using LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/edu/?trk=nav_responsive_sub_nav_edu instead of or parallel with another education.

Montse Delgado, Manager at Open Education Challenge asked: What is the role of virtual reality applications in the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) era? - Can virtual and augmented reality applications deliver the missing ingredients for profound, effective learning in distance education? What is the role of virtual reality applications in the MOOC era? CALL FOR PAPERS! http://www.openeducationeuropa.eu/en/elearning_papers/call_for_papers     (open to Apr 27 2014). Spread the word!

Those saved could be put f.ex. in measures by people against Earth Warming that is, for the time being still ignored. But its revenge lets us notice it, that's in cash. No matter if the losses are in Venezia, N.Y. or in New Orleans, on north or south pole.

Blended Learning in English Language Teaching: Course Design and Implementation

Blended learning is an area of ELT that continues to be of interest to practitioners in the field. Despite this, little can be found in the literature on blended learning course design or detailed descriptions provided of blends used in ELT contexts. This publication, which contains twenty case studies from around the world, addresses this deficit by illustrating blends being employed on EAP, ESP, Teacher Development and general EFL courses.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Very proud to have written one of the case studies (pages 65 -75) for this book. It explores the award winning Blended Learning in ELT teacher training course I designed for Bell Educational Services.

Some Pros and Cons of iPads for ELT

Some Pros and Cons of iPads for ELT | Nik Peachey | Scoop.it

From a quick comparison of these two lists it may well look like the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages, but those disadvantages are BIG, especially the cost. If you are thinking of introducing iPads in your school, then I think by far the best way to start is just by having a few in the teachers’ staff room and letting the teachers explore them and see what they can do with them. If this can generate some enthusiasm then you could be on your way to having a 21st century language school.
