Government commissioned report on how new CCGs are engaging the public (or not).
There appears to be a classic NHS response to the need for patient/public engagement - to talk about it, a lot. But action is a long way off for many commissioning groups, because they simply don't know how to achieve this. Where we have observed small successes, it's usually based heavily on the involvement of the same motivated (or agenda-driven) patients. These individuals are valuable to Trusts and CCGs but not always representative. Very little is being done to think creatively about getting a representative cross-section of individuals involved, or about how to continually develop and update this group. What's more, there's no budget and no-one with the time to think about it. If public engagement is to be about more than 'bums on seats' - for it to really have value - individuals in positions of NHS authority have to start really valuing the concept and not just towing the line because it's the 'buzzword'.
