As Europe wrestles with the refugee crisis, the viability of the Schengen agreement and the United Kingdom’s future in the Union, it is perhaps worth looking at just how much change the continent has experienced in its turbulent history.

This three-minute video from LiveLeak takes us through 1,000 years of history and, as it does so, highlights just how young the modern concept of Europe really is.

5 Biggest Barriers to Education Technology | Edudemic

5 Biggest Barriers to Education Technology | Edudemic | NGOs in Human Rights, Peace and Development | Scoop.it

Increasingly, teachers are using technology in the classroom to aid learning and make it easier to chart student progress. In many classrooms across the country, students are assigned laptops or tablets, which they use to carry out in-class research, lessons, and projects. Teachers also often use SMART boards which are interactive whiteboards with touch screens.

Personally I think it's mainly number 2 and 5.

Brian Mariscal's curator insight, April 3, 2:37 PM
Many school districts view technology as the next big thing for an educational purpose but many obstacles are present. But before the article went into the interesting points George states that 71 % of people in 2015 said they only need technology to teach students. In addition 60% of teachers use laptops in the classroom on a daily basis, while 58.7% report daily use of other education technology tools. After making these interesting points George separates the five points clearly and visible which are cost, lack of training, resistance to adopting new technologies, too much red tape, Insufficient infrastructure. For the first claim, cost, he states that cost is to much for the reason that teachers say (BYOD) bring your own device. For the second point, lack of training, states that not all students are used to technology and probably be left behind. For the third point, resistance to adopting new technologies, states how parents can become a conflict and not want to use technology as a form of learning. For the four point, too much red tape, basically means that it takes about eight months just trying to pass state policy makers, school boards, chief information officers, school principals. For the final point, insufficient infrastructure, states that more than 16% of teachers say their school districts don’t provide regular access to the internet for students in the majority of the district. Overall when reading this article there where things I knew but then there were also points I didn’t know of which made it an interesting article to read.

Noam Chomsky on the Dangers of Standardized Testing

Noam Chomsky on the Dangers of Standardized Testing | NGOs in Human Rights, Peace and Development | Scoop.it

"The assessment itself is completely artificial. It’s not ranking teachers in accordance with their ability to help develop children who will reach their potential, explore their creative interests. The User's Manual To Design Thinking Your Teaching (Infographic)

The User's Manual To Design Thinking Your Teaching (Infographic) | NGOs in Human Rights, Peace and Development | Scoop.it
What I love about Design Thinking is that it's flexible. There are teaching approaches out there that tell us what to do, but it makes more sense for every teacher to teach differently every year, because we each get different students.
Think about it. We don't treat all our friends and family the same. Our interactions with them are largely based on our experience of who they are and what makes them tick. Teaching is the same way. One size fits all approaches do not work.

The challenge is that, in the grand scheme of things, we only know our students for a short time. However, personalization of education is not a fad; it's a thing. So. let's use the Design Thinking Cycle (Empathy, Definition, Ideation, Prototyping, Testing) to improve Teaching, shall we?

Top 30 maps and charts that explain the European Union - Geoawesomeness

Tomorrow European Union celebrates the 60th birthday. On March 25, 1957, leaders of six countries – Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands – met in Rome and signed two treaties that established the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community, later transformed into the European Union.

Although Europe is experiencing growing turbulence related to migration crisis, terrorist attacks, and Brexit, among others, the EU project is still the best thing that happened to the continent after The World War II.  It allowed keeping peace and wealth for long years and we hope that it will stay that way for the next generations.

Why Digital Learning is Reshaping Education

Why Digital Learning is Reshaping Education | NGOs in Human Rights, Peace and Development | Scoop.it

The ways in which students learn are changing rapidly thanks to technology, and both students and teachers will benefit from it. There are several specific changes that we can expect to see as digital learning takes over education. For one, the way teachers present information and how students work with that information has changed. Students are asked to be more hands-on and collaborative than ever before. There are also new skills that students must learn, such as digital literacy.
