A significant forecast rise in wages is now looking overly optimistic – the shift towards lower-paying jobs has largely seen to that

Laura Gardiner from the Resolution Foundation highlights three reasons why predictions of wages picking up are likely to prove overly-optimistic: the amount of spare capacity in the labour market, low inflation adversely influencing wage-setting decisions, the fact that the workforce has changed with many of those getting back into the labour market doing so in low paid jobs.

Five EU reforms that British businesses should demand

When dealing with the EU, companies should work out how strong the UK’s hand is, and what they can get

Graham Watson's curator insight, May 19, 3:39 AM

Matthew Lynn identifies five areas that he argues the UK should be keen to reform as the cost of keeping the UK in the EU, The problem is, as far as I see it, that we're not in a particularly strong negotiating position. I agree that Brexit is unlikely to be the catastrophe that some portray but equally I think that there are costs associated with it.

]

However, are we going to be able to negotiate all of these exemptions - I doubt that. It effectively alters the nature of the EU with individual nations wanting to dine a la carte, rather than from the set menu.

I feel like I've missed something in not scooping this yet; however, I'm of the view that history will treat Gordon Brown's handling of the global financial crisis more sympathetically than current commentators.

I also think that the Labour Party's economic policy in the recent election campaign failed to make  this clear...so this article is well worth a read.

In the 1950s, every region of Britain had industrial clout. Then came postindustrialism, a disastrous intellectual fad that has proved to be no substitute for advanced manufacturing

Graham Watson's curator insight, May 19, 2:46 AM

I have to say I quite like this article: it smacks of the age-old question "Yes, but what do you actually do?" which I always make a point of asking derivatives traders, actuaries and so on.

It's an old-fashioned view of a post-industrial society of shiftless, low-wage service sector jobs that some argue is no substitute for the industrial employment of the past. And interestingly, the author argues that manufacturing is essential not because it's relatively static but because its leading exponents are so innovative, capable of moving with the times and re-inventing themselves.

And here's the Telegraph from yesterday looking at deflation and its implications. Let's face it no one expects it to continue - however, the more interesting thing is that there are many who think that we'll struggle to get inflation back to target in the next couple of years, like Samuel Tombs at Capital Economics, for a start.

This article and infographic shares 10 evidenced-based research strategies to help teach your students. This is a really good resource for any faculty member to review and consider.

Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, May 22, 2:58 PM

These strategies are the essential foundation of what all good teachers do.  Every article and book that I have read about school improvement and effective teaching seems for focus on these same strategies.  We know it...but do we do it?  WITH FIDELITY?  I think that is often where it breaks down. These strategies need to be a part of EVERY lesson...EVERY day. They become highly effective when they are implemented consistently and intentionally.  With all teachers are required to do, it is easy to lose focus on intentionally using these effective strategies.

Alfio Gangemi's curator insight, May 24, 8:38 PM

This is probably the best resource I have found for a pre-service and graduate teacher. As the title says it outlines the top ten evidence based teaching strategies and clearly describes each strategy and how and why they are effective. Very useful resource!.
