Why am I not surprised? All the mobile network providers planned for significant revenues from mobile payments from a share of the lucrative transaction fees that the local banks, EMV and Amex share from charging the retailers everytime payment via credit and cash cards are used.

The secure element is more than the key inside the SIM Card or the phone, it requires an equivalent enterprise infrastructure to house the matching keys and who better equipped than the telcos who have been doing this for nearly 15 years (with the advent of GSM).

ISIS in fact is a move by telcos to muscle into this space (replacing the local EMV franchisees - the local banks - where retailers source out their payment hardware and services(maybe not initially but in the long run the local banks, and EMV for that matter will be redundant).

It was surprising though to find out that Google has silently built in a distinct secure element in Android particularly for the Google Wallet. This opened a Pandora's box of phone manufacturers (starting with Samsung) to build in a 3rd secure firmware  in their phones and talk directly with EMV proponents VISA effectively cutting off the telcos.

Forget the Google wallet this (telcos vs. local banks/ EMV) is war waiting to happen since the advent of Mobile phones and the realization that they can be used for payments as well.

PS MC paypass is a move by Master card to negotiate revenue sharing between the local banks and the telcos, guess what, Samsung Visa deal is probably cheaper.

NFC sur iPhone : Les Solutions

NFC sur iPhone : Les Solutions | NFC RESEARCH | Scoop.it

Paulo Gervasio's curator insight, May 5, 2013 3:45 AM

After reading the article I have a very lengthy reply which can be summarized into a few points:

1. The article is correct in the inherent danger (phishing and malware) posed by URL Shorteners but mobile banking should be using more controllable mobile apps instead of providing URIs that leads to web based transactions.

2. QR Codes/ Barcode are just bridges, what matters security wise, is the app that parses the QR Code and performs the transaction.

3. Mobile Payment by any barcode or QR Code can be done in a very secure manner but it requires a change in the transaction model that the credit card companies EMV in particular may not be comfortable in implementing at the moment.

Consider below:

I can for example have a transction model by which supermarkets or any vendor flashes a QR Code containing the vendor account, payment terminal ID,  transaction ID, and  the amount payable. It goes through an app which may use a secure element within the phone (maybe the same element as the SIM Card) and a biometric key -  to transact with Visa, MC or Amex. Once the transaction pushes through, an acknowledgement is sent to the payment terminal that the payment is made. This would be as secure as any transaction currently made by any NFC phone.   The transaction will be completely anonymous to the vendor making fraud from vendor collected information impossible.

The difference between the barcodes and the current EMV model  is that authenticion is initiated by the user through an active Mobile phone. Current transaction models call for a passive card and an active Payment Terminal. NFC is one step ahead as it mimics a passive contactless payment card. There is therefore no requirement to change the current payment terminals to something else.

Audit wise though, the barcode method can have a running transaction log verifiable against the Cards monthly statement with cloud technology, it can even be written in a non updateable storage and the log can be subpoenad for use in courts in case of dispute.

The negative side to this is the reequirement for a reliable data connection between EMV / or agent and the user's phone vs. the current model which only require the payment terminal to be connected securely.
