On TV and the Lecture Circuit, Bill Nye Aims to Change the World

On TV and the Lecture Circuit, Bill Nye Aims to Change the World | Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for LPG | Scoop.it
William Sanford Nye, better known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, has gone from TV host to fierce defender of scientific issues that have been polemicized for religious, political and even economic reasons.
Lois Wallentine's insight:

The science rockstar is still on the circuit advocating for strong science content for the next generation: 'He takes on those who would demand that the public schools teach alternative theories of evolution and the origins of the earth — most famously, in a video clip from the site BigThink.com that has been viewed some five million times. In it, he flatly tells adult viewers that “if you want to deny evolution and live in your world — in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe — that’s fine. But don’t make your kids do it, because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.” '

Kan. school board approves new science standards

Kan. school board approves new science standards | Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for LPG | Scoop.it
Lois Wallentine's insight:

Kansas evolves: "Though the new standards drew some criticism over their treatment of evolution, it wasn't anywhere as vocal or public as in the past. Together, Democrats and moderate Republicans control the board, and social conservatives wanting to inject skepticism of evolution into the standards were likely to find little support."

Merced teachers approve of new science standards - Local - MercedSun-Star.com

Michael Boykin is encouraged by what he is seeing in new Common Core instructional standards for science.
Lois Wallentine's insight:

"Common Core science instruction practices will be a shift from quantity to quality. New standards will limit the number of items taught, so the materials used will be explored in greater depth."

Report: Science Standards Fall Short in Aligning to Math Common Core

Report: Science Standards Fall Short in Aligning to Math Common Core | Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for LPG | Scoop.it
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute contends that the Next Generation Science Standards fail to adequately align with the common-core math standards.
Lois Wallentine's insight:

Critique states three downfalls:

• In several cases where math is required to fully understand the science being taught, the operations go beyond what students would have learned by that grade level in CC math classrooms;

• Appendix L "misses" opportunities to link between grade-appropriate math and required science content; and

• The appendix makes "superficial connections" to grade-appropriate math in ways that do little to enhance science learning.

Common Science Standards Deserve 'C' Grade, Think Tank Says

Common Science Standards Deserve 'C' Grade, Think Tank Says | Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for LPG | Scoop.it
The Next Generation Science Standards are inferior to the science standards in many states, the Thomas B. Fordham Institute concludes in a new review.
Lois Wallentine's insight:

Fordham Institute says NGSS is not "meaty" enough--doesn't have enough content: "Throughout the [standards], content takes a back seat to practices, even though students need knowledge before they'll ever demonstrate fluency or mastery of scientific practices,"

Kentucky Moves to Adopt Common Science Standards

Kentucky Moves to Adopt Common Science Standards | Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for LPG | Scoop.it
Kentucky's state board of education voted yesterday to provisionally adopt the Next Generation Science Standards.
Lois Wallentine's insight:

Kentucky "provisionally adopts"--could be debate down the road: "In an email, Nancy Rodriguez, a department spokeswoman told me that will involve a public hearing followed by a review by legislative committees. "Depending on the feedback from the hearing and the action of the legislative committees, the standards could be enacted or they could come back to the Kentucky Board of Education for changes," she said."

Lois Wallentine's insight:

Because the NGSS is performance based (the standards orient around how kids need to demonstrate knowledge of science concepts), we need to consider how to make our books more hands-on where we can. And teachers need to be more aware of our resources. Note: "It will fall to their teachers, she adds, to find the resources, devise the investigative questions students will pursue, and evaluate how well students prove what they know."
