Newspaper Industry of the future
Can newspapers be saved?? The answer is inevitably linked to the ever evolving dynamics in the newspaper industry: Newspapers purchased by high tech entrepreneurs, famous journalists leaving for new media ventures, European countries trying to excise taxes on republished news links and snippets, Bitcoin as an enabler of ala carte news, community sourced news. Stay tuned for the Renaissance!

German Lawmakers Rule Out “Google Tax” for News Snippets | SiliconANGLE

German Lawmakers Rule Out “Google Tax” for News Snippets | SiliconANGLE | Newspaper Industry of the future | Scoop.it
Sean Lyons's insight:

The ongoing debate about taxing (or charging royalties) to news aggreators like "Google" and "Bing" for displaying links and snippets continues .. and has been most strongly tested in Europe (Germany, France, Portugal).  This victory ruled out the tax for republishing "small" snippets but left the definition of "small" open for debate! The most interesting question this raises for me is "Are the aggregators links/snippets providing free advertising for the newspapers or are they exploiting content at the expense of the newspapers??

How Bitcoin Can Save Publishing - The Genesis Block

How Bitcoin Can Save Publishing - The Genesis Block | Newspaper Industry of the future | Scoop.it
Publishing has evolved drastically over the past two decades, proving to be one of the industries most disrupted by the advent and proliferation of the internet.
Sean Lyons's insight:

Paywalls enabling online access have been successfully launched helping to bridge the offline and online worlds but the ability to pay small fees (Micropayments) for single articles of interest (a pay as you go capability) could be enabled with Bitcoin.  I love the ala carte model for music which itunes pioneered - Could this work for Newspaper content??

Is Glenn Greenwald the Future of News?

Is Glenn Greenwald the Future of News? | Newspaper Industry of the future | Scoop.it

This is a very interesting "op -ed" piece in dialogue format in the NY Times where Glenn Greenwald (who broke the Snowden story for the Guardian) and Bill Keller (NYT) debate reporting styles and how journalism fulfills its mission. This is a thought provoking piece and I love the format!

Sean Lyons's insight:

I think this could be at the essence of saving newspapers. Continue to provide sufficient value to attract subscribers and maintain the goals to not only accurately inform and debate the news but provide checks and balances is key. It's also interesting that Greenwald is leaving the Guardian for a new venture.  There have been so many famous journalists leaving their traditional papers recently (Greenwald, Mossberg, Pogue).
