A new contract signed in August will see Damen Shipyards Group deliver design, material package, technical assistance and training for two vessels to be built by the Mexican Navy under the Damen Technical Cooperation programme. Damen announced the contract on 16 September.

The contract covers one Damen Stan Patrol 4207 vessel and one Damen Fast Crew Supplier 5009 vessel.

The Damen Stan Patrol 4207vessel will be the seventh of the Mexican Navy’s Tenochtitlan-class. It will be built on the navy yard ASTIMAR 1 in Tampico. The Damen Fast Crew Supplier 5009 will be constructed on the Navy yard ASTIMAR 6 in Guaymas, a city on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The vessel, which has been adapted to meet specific Mexican Navy requirements, features the Damen Sea Axe bow which reduces slamming up to 70%.

In total this vessel can transport 145 passengers and 17 crew members, and will also include a deck crane and an extra accommodation module. The vessel has four Caterpillar 3512C TA engines, and can reach a speed of 21 knots.

In November 2013 the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) and Damen Shipyards Group (the Netherlands) signed another contract for a Damen Stan Patrol 4207.

The Mexican Navy already operates two similar Patrol Vessels and has currently two ships under construction in their shipyard ‘Astillero de Marina Numero 1’ in Tampico, which is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

The vessel is the fifth one of the Tenochtitlan-class and will be constructed by the Mexican Navy, while Damen will supply a partial material package and technical assistance. The steel for the hull and part of the piping will be acquired by the Mexican Navy. Keel laying is expected to be early 2014. The vessel will be named ‘Uxmal’, after an ancient Mayan city on the Yucatan peninsula.

This project is another example of how Damen, through its ‘building on site’ programme (i.e. Damen Technical Cooperation), enables customers to build high quality vessels in their own yards, gaining experience and being able to contribute to the development of the local shipbuilding industry. This concept has proven to be successful over thirty years in five continents in different market segments.

In the first week of August the Mexican Navy (Secretaria de Marina) and Damen Shipyards Group signed a contract for a fourth Damen Stan Patrol 4207. The Dutch ship design and shipbuilding company will supply the Mexican Navy with the design and material package with which ASTIMAR 1 (the Mexican Navy yard in Tampico) will build the patrol vessel. In addition, Damen will assist ASTIMAR 1 with technical support in order to optimize the delivery time and quality of the vessel.

The Damen Stan Patrol 4207 is designed to perform patrol duties in coastal areas and the economic exclusive zone. Other clients who operate similar vessels in the region include navies and coast guards of Jamaica, Barbados, the Dutch Caribbean, Honduras, the Canadian Coast Guard and the US Coast Guard. The USCG recently received five Fast Response Cutters for the Sentinel Class, out of a series of 58, which are based on the same Damen Stan Patrol design.

Two previous patrol vessels, ARM Tenochtitlan (PC-331) and ARM Teotihuacan (PC-332) are already deployed by the Mexican Navy.

This Mexican patrol vessel is the fourth of this class to be built in Mexico. As with other clients, Damen puts its DTC-program (Damen Technical Cooperation) to use. This service is offered to both young and experienced shipyards and aims, if and when the client so desires, to develop their shipbuilding capabilities with respect to Damen vessels. With technical, operational and logistical assistance Damen shares its extensive knowledge on shipbuilding with many yards worldwide.
