Preliminary data from the field suggests that social media is becoming a powerful addition to the health communicators’ toolkit. Although there is a great deal of interest in using social media as a tool for public health communications, the research evaluating its utility is still in its infancy. As of yet, few research studies have examined the broader utility of social media for the adoption of health promoting and protective behaviours.

  • Les interventions de marketing social se distinguent des campagnes de communication, notamment par l’utilisation d’un éventail de moyens pour encourager, soutenir et outiller la population ou le groupe auquel est proposé le changement. 
  • La stratégie du marketing social peut agir sur les déterminants environnementaux des comportements. Elle peut avoir pour objectif, par exemple, de convaincre des décideurs de prendre des décisions qui auront pour effet de rendre les environnements plus favorables à l’adoption de saines habitudes de vie.
  • L’efficacité du marketing social peut être optimisée par la planification et la mise en œuvre d'interventions respectant un ensemble de critères qui font consensus dans la littérature scientifique.

Come per Uber nel campo dei taxi, le innovazioni Uber-like in sanità mettono a nudo l’incapacità e il ritardo del sistema – e soprattutto dei professionisti - nel venire incontro alle legittime esigenze degli utenti. Perché è così difficile contattare il proprio medico telefonicamente? Perché non è possibile comunicare con lui via email o via skype? Perché fare una coda e perdere mezza giornata per la banale ripetizione di una ricetta? Organizzazioni più attente all’innovazione – guarda caso diffuse proprio nei pressi della Silicon Valley, cioè in California – come Kaiser Permanente da anni hanno introdotto modalità di rapporto tra medici e pazienti più dirette e più comode, basate sull’uso delle tecnologie e di internet4. ...
Ma la medaglia di queste innovazioni ha l’altra faccia, assai meno amichevole e rassicurante. Quella della polverizzazione dell’offerta sanitaria in un caotico mercato sanitario, dove il basso prezzo delle prestazioni ha come corrispettivo il basso salario, talora lo sfruttamento, dei professionisti, dove overdiagnosis e overtreatment sono quasi sempre la regola, dove la qualità non è quasi mai controllata, dove si possono facilmente annidare frodi e abusi.

Purpose: To review the effectiveness of social marketing interventions in influencing individual behaviour and bringing about environmental and policy-level changes in relation to alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs and physical activity. Social marketing is the use of marketing concepts in programmes designed to influence the voluntary behaviour of target audiences in order to improve health and society. 

Originality/Value: The research described in this paper represents one of the few systematic examinations of social marketing effectiveness and is based on a clear definition of ‘social marketing’. It highlights both social marketing’s potential to achieve change in different behavioural contexts and its ability to work at individual, environmental and wider policy levels.
