Let Pew Research guide your social media efforts

Chuck Niedringhaus's insight:

Ever feel like you’re a technology dinosaur when people say your company needs to use social media?  Pew Research recently completed a study on US adult usage of various social media that can give you some guidance on which vehicles your company should consider.  Since you want your marketing to reach people where they are, Facebook is the most obvious first step.  It enjoys high usage rates with all working age adults.  Pew finds usage of Pinterest and Twitter at much lower rates, however, they enjoy enough usage to justify further exploration.  In particular, Pinterest appeals to women who use the service more in searching for products to purchase.  That definitely makes it something to consider.  Visit here for the full story: http://pewinternet.org/~/media//Files/Reports/2013/PIP_SocialMediaUsers.pdf

Chuck Niedringhaus's insight:

PPAI’s quarterly tracking of distributors found an average increase of 9.5% in sales during 4th Quarter, 2012.  These results lead to general cautious optimism for the year to come.  They identified economic conditions (77%) and reduced client budgets (56%) as potential threats to their success.  Reflecting the passage of new laws, 26% indicated new regulations as a major concern.  Get more information here: http://www.ppai.org/inside-ppai/research/Documents/PPAI%20Distributor%20Quarterly%20Sales%20Barometer%20-%204Q%202012%20PPB%20Edited.pdf

As gun control legislation grinds to halt in Washington, parents and teachers are taking matters into their own hands
Chuck Niedringhaus's insight:

A sad reflection of today’s headlines comes from this British article on a new trend in US school uniforms and classroom design – bulletproof clothing, backpacks and accessories! It seems like an over-reaction at this point so I’m not sure how much demand there will be.

Economic Winners and Losers

Economic Winners and Losers | News You Can Use | Scoop.it

The slow recovery isn't slow everywhere.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics says . . .

Chuck Niedringhaus's insight:

It’s easy to focus on the economic statistics that the US Government announces each month, but sometimes you lose sight of the trends over time.  This report has some great graphs showing how employment in each business area is performing.  Winners include mining and logging, retail, healthcare, transportation, finance, professional services, hospitality and temporary employment.  Unfortunately, job growth remains slow or even negative for construction, manufacturing, utilities, government and information.  The report highlights building materials and garden supply businesses that should experience a strong seasonal surge in job creation.
