Stop Imperialism » Interview - David Swanson 08-22-12 | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Eric has the pleasure of interviewing renowned author and activist David Swanson. Eric and David discuss the relationship between war and morality and the way in which media and the establishment normalize the concept of war. In addition, they examine the willingness of the mainstream Left to line up behind war, the subservience of the foundation-funded organizations and media to the imperialist ruling class, and the insidious doctrine of "humanitarian intervention" (R2P). Eric and David also try to envision a way to unite anti-war voices from all over the political spectrum in the struggle against the imperialist war machine."

A great interview if you want to understand why the anti-war movement seems to have subsided, at a time when it should be growing.

One of David Swanson's websites is called War is a Crime.

I agree, wholeheartedly.

United Nations to begin investigating U.S. drone strike targeted kills -- Sott.net | News on World Events | Scoop.it
The White House defends the deaths of civilians they've caused with drone strikes overseas, but as the number of casualties created by the remote-control murder machines perpetually soar, the United Nations says they will soon start an investigation.

"Ben Emmerson, the UN special rapporteur on counter-terror operations, told an audience at Harvard law school this week that a sub-section of the international organization will begin focusing next year on the Obama administration's extrajudicial killings of suspected insurgents and the innocent civilians all too often executed in the process."

Why are more people not outraged by this?

Not only innocent civilians are executed, but even the 'insurgents' are only 'suspects'.

Since when is this justice?

Craftsment March from Volos to Athens to Protest Bailout Agreements & Austerity - Keep Talking Greece | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Craftsemen from Volos started to walk towards Athens to protest the several bailout agreements that pushed them into “deep impoverishment”, as they said. Some 150 craftsmen left the Volos on Saturday morning and are expected to reach Greece’s capital after ten days, on October 23rd. Upon arrival at Syntagma Square they plan to hand over to Parliament a resolution with their demands and spend the night at Syntagma Sq. The have decided to launch a hunger strike once their march protest is over."

"Statement:

“We march to Athens in order to express our total indignation and strongly protest the implemented policy. We do not give away the future of our children, our businesses and the right to work. Having no hope for the improvement of our survival, we are forced to fight in order not to lose all the rights we acquired with great effort and struggle. Is it possible to pay for so many years our insurance contributions in order to secure a basic pension and medical health care, and when we retire to end up with a hunger-pension? Ethos, pride, dignity, collegiality are neither bought nor sold in any state system “.

This is humanity standing up and fighting with pride and dignity against greed and corruption, and it is spreading around the world!

Success in Quebec Speaks to Power of Mass Movements

Success in Quebec Speaks to Power of Mass Movements | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Usually it takes social movements years, even decades, to significantly affect public policy. The movement unleashed by Québec students last spring has had a much quicker impact."

It seems as if there is some good news to report, which is a welcome change.

"Beyond politicizing a generation, it has spurred a more socially and ecologically progressive political climate. It is within this context that Pauline Marois' government has adopted more progressive reforms in its first days in office than any other provincial government in recent Canadian history."

However, now is not the time to rest on one's laurels, but to continue the action that has achieved this progress.

"For those in Québec, recent gains should inspire further mobilizations. For those outside, the PQ’s reforms are a reminder that determined grassroots movements can create a political climate in which governments place environmental concerns and social rights over the interests of corporations and the wealthy."

Tsipras Demands Greek Debt Conference Like Post-War Germany | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece

Tsipras Demands Greek Debt Conference Like Post-War Germany | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Tsipras said it was “evident that all EU member states should participate” in this conference, not just the eurozone, as well as private investors, because “the common currency is the only way forward.” There had to be change, he said, because the “deadly medicine” of austerity over the last three years meant that nearly all bailout funds were “only going to save Greek bankers who created the debt in tandem with European bankers."

At the moment Greece is the only country in the world with a true 'anti-austerity' party, even though it is at the moment in opposition.

However, people all over the world are protesting and striking against the austerity measures that are being put in place in every country in the world - if the oligarchs can get away with it.

It is time to spread the word that 'the people', who far outnumber 'the oligarchs' are standing up against these measures.

Please spread the information for the 'anti-austerity' movement needs to become truly global!

Dungeons for journalists, Or How to Silence Dissent and Retain a Democratic Posture | Global Research | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Kat’s site, www.klokkenluideronline.nl, is the most widely read source for alternative news, comment and analysis in the Netherlands."

However, it seems that the 'powers that should not be' do not want people to learn about what is really happening from people like Kat.

As the article concludes,

"Under these circumstances, there is no hope Kat will get a fair trial. The Dutch media (all state controlled or corporate owned), representing the powerful interests of the political establishment, dutifully report on the Pussy Riot girls in Russia, but remain silent on the repression of free speech under their very noses.

Needless to say, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, ever anxious to criticize whatever happens outside the US, its NATO vassals and its neocolonies and protectorates, remain completely silent on the political repression in the Netherlands and will not even consider looking into this case of Nazi-style repression."

It is important to realise that, for the most part, the mainstream media does not report the 'news' in an unbiased way.

The 'mainstream media' is controlled by corporations for their benefit, not for yours.

Stop Imperialism » Subverting Sanctions: Iran’s Strategic Economic Development

Stop Imperialism » Subverting Sanctions: Iran’s Strategic Economic Development | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"The ongoing overt and covert war against Iran, instigated by the United States and Israel primarily, seeks to isolate Iran politically, militarily and, most importantly, economically.  The Western imperialists have as their goal no less than full-scale war with Iran, a key regional power and one that the United States has failed to control or otherwise manipulate since the revolution of 1979."

This is an extremely interesting article by Eric Draitser on the real story of Iran rather than the one that is fed to the world by the corporate-controlled mainstream media.

He covers a range of issues that Iran has had to face, but makes the point clearly that the Iranians will not be daunted and have found ways to invest in developing their country instead of collapsing under the strain.

As Eric goes on to say,

"Iran has had to endure an unprecedented international assault in recent years.  Because of the unwillingness of the government and the Iranian people to bend to the will of the Western imperialist ruling class, the Islamic Republic has been attacked quite literally from all sides."

Iran should be seen as an example to other countries in defying the Anglo-American oligarchy.

As Eric concludes his article,

"Of course, nothing infuriates the forces of international finance capital and imperialism more than economic independence.  For this reason, Iran will remain the bogeyman for much of the Western world while working to shape its own economic future."

Papoulias Tells Troika to Stop “Merciless Lashing” | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece

Papoulias Tells Troika to Stop “Merciless Lashing” | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"As talks between Greece’s coalition government and international lenders over a plan to cut $14.6 billion in spending remained stalled, and anger and unrest were growing, President Karolos Papoulias said the country has suffered enough and urged an end to what he called “merciless lashing,” and demands for more austerity."

Although the government claims that it is "working to get the economy back on track", this will never happen through the imposition of austerity measures.

It is good to see that the Greek people were protesting loudly and even prevented the Troika inspectors from entering the Labour Ministry, even if temporarily.

However, are these protests and the strikes enough to make a difference to the Greek government that is clearly showing itself to be the puppets of the Troika.

The Greek people did not cause the problems and they should not be made to pay for them.

Has the Greek President discovered some genuine concern for his people? If so, will he stop the Troika? Somebody has to!

9/11 cancer victims get treatment

9/11 cancer victims get treatment | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"The US federal government has added about 50 types of cancer to the list of illnesses to be covered by a 9/11 health treatment programme."

"Some 1,000 deaths have been linked to illnesses caused by toxic dust spewed by wreckage at ground zero."

There is so much that could be said about this story, not least of which is to ask why has it taken so long to acknowledge health problems from the 'toxic dust'?

The other burning questions surround the apparent uniqueness of the events of 9/11 by comparison to other 'building fires'.

Why have no other building fires led to such huge numbers of cancer victims in the survivors and first responders as a result of 'toxic dust'?

Why did the buildings 'disappear' into 'toxic dust'?

Of what did the 'toxic dust' comprise?

Is the 'toxic dust' the reason for such high rates and different types of cancer?

If these questions intrigue you I recommend Dr Judy Wood's book, Where Did The Towers Go?, it may shed some light on some of these questions.

http://wheredidthetowersgo.com/

It may also create further questions that need to be answered.

Greece Is Not Poor – It Actually Has Massive Uptapped Reserves Of Gold, Oil And Natural Gas

Greece Is Not Poor – It Actually Has Massive Uptapped Reserves Of Gold, Oil And Natural Gas | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"It turns out that the poster child for the European debt crisis is not actually poor at all.  In fact, the truth is that the nation of Greece is sitting on absolutely massive untapped reserves of gold, oil and natural gas.  If the Greeks were to fully exploit the natural resources that are literally right under their feet, they would no longer have any debt problems.  Fortunately, this recent economic crisis has spurred them to action and it is now being projected that Greece will be the number one gold producer in Europe by 2016."

If this is as valuable as it has been estimated, it is the best news to come out of Greece for a very long time.

As the article concludes, the most important point now is that this must be of benefit for the Greek people NOT for the greedy oligarchs who would exploit the resources without a care for the people - or was this the true reason behind the massive 'sell-off' of Greek assets that has been proposed?

"Hopefully the people of Greece will learn about this massive amount of wealth that is just under their feet.  If they can figure out a way to get this wealth to start to flow into the hands of the people of Greece, a lot of their problems could be solved rather quickly and they could start to experience a massive economic turnaround."

This is why the opposition of the SYRIZA party to the 'Troika' is so important.

Surreal: Clinton Pledges $45 Million in Aid to Al Qaeda in Syria

Surreal: Clinton Pledges $45 Million in Aid to Al Qaeda in Syria | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the US would be providing an additional $45 million in “non-lethal aid” to the “opposition” in Syria, reported the Associated Press. The Western press chose their words carefully, ensuring that the term “civilian opposition” was repeatedly used to describe the armed terrorist forces attempting to violently overthrow the Syrian government."

If you have been following the articles and listened to the podcasts and radio shows linked from here you will be familiar with this story; that the so-called 'rebels' in Syria are backed, armed and financed by the Anglo-American oligarchs with the sole purpose of regime change in Syria.

It is vitally important for people to understand that the regime the oligarchs want to change is a perfectly legitimate and democratically elected government. Therefore 'they' have no right to be demanding any change. There is of course another reason for wanting regime change that has nothing to do with protecting human rights or any other of the oligarch's usual rhetoric.

Furthermore they are using terrorists and mercenaries - not 'freedom fighters' - to do their dirty work for them.

If you want to know more about who 'they' are, the author Tony Cartalucci provides some useful information from this link

Troika Gets Tough on Greece: Start Firing People | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece

Troika Gets Tough on Greece: Start Firing People | Greece.GreekReporter.com Latest News from Greece | News on World Events | Scoop.it

"Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ hopes to get a quick sign-off from international lenders on his uneasy coalition government’s plan to make $14.6 billion in spending cuts the next two years were dashed when they told him the projections were off target and that he has to start shedding public payrolls of scores of thousands of workers quickly.

With his reluctant partners, the PASOK Socialists and tiny Democratic Left, already balking over some of the measures, particularly pay cuts, slashed pensions and the plan to lay off 35,000 workers and then fire them, Samaras finds himself in a political and economic dilemma."

It seems that there are many differences within the Greek coalition government as well as between the government and the Troika.

The deepening economic depression demonstrates perfectly clearly that austerity measure will not balance the budget, because they cannot do so.

However, focusing on balancing the budget is completely the wrong measure to help Greece's economy!

"Greece’s union federation for public sector employees, ADEDY, says it is planning a general strike along with its private sector counterpart GSSE to protest the new measures. Strikes and protests that often turned into riots brought down the previous administration of then-PASOK leader George Papandreou...."

Let's hope such protests can bring down the already unsteady coalition.

It's time to fire the Troika not be fired by them!

Welcome to the Project for the New American Century

In case anyone does not know about this 'think tank', the home page begins with these words by the Chairman, William Kristol.

"The Project for the New American Century is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; and that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle. The Project for the New American Century intends, through issue briefs, research papers, advocacy journalism, conferences, and seminars, to explain what American world leadership entails. It will also strive to rally support for a vigorous and principled policy of American international involvement and to stimulate useful public debate on foreign and defense policy and America's role in the world."

Furthermore, their famous document, Rebuilding America's Defenses, published in 2000 is still available from their website.

The document begins with these words,

"Established in the spring of 1997, the Project for the New American Century is a nonprofit, educational organization whose goal is to promote American global leadership. The Project is an initiative of the New Citizenship Project. William Kristol is chairman of the Project, and Robert Kagan, Devon Gaffney Cross, Bruce P. Jackson and John R. Bolton serve as directors. Gary Schmitt is executive director of the Project."

A short extract from their founding Statement of Principles follows,

“As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world’s most preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievement of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?

“[What we require is] a military that is strong and ready to meet both present and future challenges; a foreign policy that boldly and purposefully promotes American principles abroad; and national leadership that accepts the United States’ global responsibilities.

“Of course, the United States must be prudent in how it exercises its power. But we cannot safely avoid the responsibilities of global leadership of the costs that are associated with its exercise. America has a vital role in maintaining peace and security in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. If we shirk our responsibilities, we invite challenges to our fundamental interests. The history of the 20th century should have taught us that it is important to shape circumstances before crises emerge, and to meet threats before they become dire. The history of the past century should have taught us to embrace the cause of American leadership.”

This is, of course, the document that has the famous quote about a 'new Pearl Harbour' to which David Ray Griffin referred when writing about the events of 9/11.

That quote is,

"Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor."

Today, of all days, as another anniversary is marked, this must not be forgotten!
