Music Piracy: Major Studies Conflicted Over Recording Industry Impact - Forbes

Music Piracy: Major Studies Conflicted Over Recording Industry Impact - Forbes | News in the Music Industry | Scoop.it

Gene - There is much debate on weather illegal downloading of music hurts the legal purchasing of music or not. Study after study confirms both sides. There are many studies out there that point out that illegal downloading doesn’t hurt record sales for the simple fact that the music downloaded wouldn’t have been purchased anyways. There are other studies that point out that people that illegally download music are more likely to go out and purchase the music because they know what they are getting and want to support the artists that puts out good music. Other studies show that illegal downloads of music hurt record sales because people are cheap and don’t want to pay for an album, even if they like the artist, and know what to expect from them. With the advent of streaming services such as Spotify, and Pandora record sales are taking on a new direction entirely. As the digital sale and streaming of music becomes more popular, the argument of if illegal downloads hurt the sales of records should disappear.
