The pseudo-legal arguments for a police state - World Socialist Web Site #NSA #Surveillance

The pseudo-legal arguments for a police state - World Socialist Web Site #NSA #Surveillance31 December 2013

US District Judge William H. Pauley’s ruling in the case of ACLU v. Clapperon December 27, which sanctions dragnet NSA surveillance of the telephone records of the entire country’s population, has immense significance for democratic rights.

Although it is written by a federal judge, it is not so much a legal opinion as it is a fascist-style polemic that advocates scrapping the US Constitution and implementing a police state. The fact that a federal judge makes such arguments is a significant indication of the extent to which a pro-dictatorship consensus has developed within the highest levels of the judicial system.

The entire opening section of the opinion is a self-consciously political case for police state spying and silencing whistle-blowers. Responding to United States District Court judge Richard Leon’s decision earlier this month calling NSA surveillance “almost Orwellian,” Judge Pauley employs the argument that every dictatorship throughout history has made in one form or another: that “national security” and the threat of “terrorism” necessitate the abrogation of democratic rights. This is nothing but a variation on the ...

Israel to fund all abortions for women 20-33 starting next year - National | News in english | Scoop.it
Another 6,300 women are expected to have a state-funded abortion next year, at a cost of about $4.6 million.
Juan Carlos Hernandez's insight:
Israel to Pay for All Abortions

Israeli health officials announced Monday that the state would pay for all abortions for women age 20 to 33 starting next year. Subsidized abortions were previously only available in the case of medical emergencies, including rape and sexual abuse. An Israeli medical official says he hopes to make the program universal in the future. "It was brought to our attention that there is a large group of women between 20 and 30 who for various reasons—financial or reasons of secrecy—do not terminate pregnancies," health official Jonathan Halevy said. Women will have to appear before a state committee before terminating a pregnancy.

#USA ▶ Jobless Benefits Cut For 1.3 Million, Despite Highest Long-term Unemployment Since World War II - YouTube

Publiée le 30 déc. 2013

http://www.democracynow.org - On Saturday, 1.3 million Americans lost their last lifeline from the federal government: an emergency unemployment insurance program. Although long-term unemployment is still at its highest level since World War II, Congress failed to renew the program in the budget deal it passed just before adjourning for winter recess. The program provided up to 47 weeks of supplemental unemployment insurance payments to jobless people looking for work. Now, just a quarter of unemployed Americans will receive jobless benefits -- the smallest proportion in half a century. Allowing the program to sunset is expected to have wide-scale ramifications for the economy at large, axing job growth by around 300,000 positions next year and pushing hundreds of thousands of households to the brink of poverty.
