(By Muhamad Sabah via B’Tselem)

Following are images of the fishing docks in Gaza as captured by B’Tselem field researcher Muhammad Sabah. There is no denying the colorful sight of so many boats moored in the harbor. Yet in point of fact, the picturesque sight is evidence of a grim reality, with the boats out of commission and the docks deserted.

The Oslo Accords granted Gaza’s fishermen a fishing range of 20 nautical miles (approx. 37 kilometers) from shore. Yet this arrangement was never actually implem...

Infant Mortality in Detroit Rivals Many Third World Countries

Infant Mortality in Detroit Rivals Many Third World Countries | News in english | Scoop.it
Although the crime rate in Detroit is high, it's not the #1 killer of children in the city.  Kids in the city are more likely to die from infant mortality than violence, according to The Detroit News. Children born premature face sometimes fatal challenges of "collapsing lungs" and "failing organs", and more premature babies are born in Detroit than any other U.S. city. This helps explain why the infant mortality rate, a term which accounts for kids who die before age one, is so high in Detroit. The infant mortality rate is so high that it actually rivals that of many third world countries. “It’s infuriating, because we know we can change the trajectory of these numbers,” said Kristen McDonald, vice president of program and policy for the Detroit-based Skillman Foundation, according to The Detroit News. One of the factors contributing to the high infant mortality rate is that many of the women having babies are young and single, less likely to have the [...]

Saudis snub US congressional delegation | WashingtonExaminer.com

Saudis snub US congressional delegation | WashingtonExaminer.com | News in english | Scoop.it
Saudi Arabian diplomats and military officials refused to meet with a bipartisan delegation of senior congressional staffers who visited the Middle Eastern country last week, an unusual snub that suggests increased tension between the U.S. and a key ally.
Everyone on the trip definitely took it as a snub, one of the staffers who went on the trip, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Washington Examiner. The delegation was comprised of high level staff from three House committees: Intelligence, Homeland Security, and Armed Services.
The staffer said that the delegation asked to meet with representatives of Saudi Arabia's Foreign Affairs Ministry and Defense Ministry during the weeklong trip, but the Saudis denied both requests. The rejection is especially unusual because the Saudis paid for the delegation's visit, but did not allow them to talk to their most natural counterparts in the Saudi Arabian government. The aide, who has visited the country multiple times on such delegations, said every previous trip featured a meeting with at least one of the two ministries.

Juan Carlos Hernandez's insight:

The New York Times Sunday Review this week reflects the growing consensus that the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement is the main game in town.  Two columns on BDS are published: one by Omar Barghouti, a leading advocate for BDS, and the other by Hirsh Goodman, an Israeli-South African analyst who is also the husband of Isabel Kershner–a New York Times reporter based in Jerusalem.

The column by Goodman is noteworthy for two reasons.  The first reasons is that the Times doesn’t see fit to disclose that they’re partners.  This is a pattern for the “paper of record” when it comes to Goodman and Kershner.  In 2012, I authored a piece in Fairness and Accuracy and Reporting’s magazine pointing out that Ke...
