Juan Carlos Hernandez's insight:

The #TTIP Trade Pact Would Be Disastrous for Europe - BuzzFlash.com

ERIC ZUESSE FOR BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT

On November 14, German Economic News (which this writer has found to be the world’s most honest, non-propagandistic newspaper) published two articles about the first independent study of the likely impacts of the Obama-proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). This study, by an American economist, concludes:

“TTIP appears to favor economic disintegration, rather than integration, in Europe. At a minimum, [the] official studies do not offer a solid basis for an informed decision on TTIP …

“TTIP would lead to losses in terms of net exports after a decade, compared to the baseline ‘no-TTIP’ scenario …

“TTIP would lead to net losses in terms of GDP …

“TTIP would lead to a loss of labor income …

“TTIP would lead to job losses …

“TTIP would lead to a reduction of the labor share [and increase in the capital or stockholders’ share] …

“TTIP would lead to a loss of government revenue [less money for infrastructure, law-enforcement, social welfare, etc.] …

“TTIP would lead to higher financial instability [higher risk of economic crashes].”

The report starts by pointing out that the official analyses are based upon the same macroeconomic assumptions that had produced the 2008 economic rash and the subsequent increased concentration of wealth among the super-rich and stagnation for everyone else. This report, by contrast, applies a set of assumptions that, if they had been applied prior to the crash, would have averted the crash; and, moreover, that are in accord with the large and mounting body of empirical research findings in economics, which show that the prior assumptions are simply, and rather consistently, false.

The study notes that, consistent with the now existing massive body of empirical findings in economics, “any viable strategy to rekindle economic growth in Europe would have to build on a strong policy effort in support of labor incomes.” By contrast, the Obama pl

#Iraq Tomas Young’s Last Letter to Bush, Cheney- by Ralph Nader

Juan Carlos Hernandez's insight:

#Iraq Tomas Young’s Last Letter to Bush, Cheney- by Ralph Nader-

November 16, 2014 "ICH" - The courageous journey of seriously wounded Iraq War veteran, Tomas Young, ended this past Monday, nearly eleven years after he was ambushed in a wholly exposed military truck. He passed away in Seattle while being lovingly cared for by his wife Claudia.

Tomas did not go quietly, despite his being paralyzed from the chest down, excruciating pain, comas and reliance on caregivers. He became an anti-war peace activist, addressing convocations and responding to as many interview requests as his agonized condition could tolerate.

I learned about Tomas when his mother, Cathy Smith, called from Walter Reed Army Hospital in 2004, where her son was under care. She said Tomas liked to read and wanted me to visit him. I called legendary talk show host Phil Donahue and asked him to join me in bringing Tomas a box full filled with some thirty books. We learned that he enlisted in the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks because he wanted to help bring the perpetrators of those attacks to justice and also acquire some savings for a college education. Instead, he was sent to Iraq which had no connection to 9/11 or to any national security threat to the U.S. In his words, “We were used. We were betrayed. And we have been abandoned.”

Phil was so taken with his story that he stayed in close touch with Tomas and his family and helped him spread his story. With Ellen Spiro, Phil Donahue produced the gripping documentary based on Tomas’ story, Body of War, in 2007. The story was the excruciating experiences of Tomas Young, who managed to travel to some film screenings to support soldiers “speaking out against this war.”

One of the most memorable clips from Body of War showed George W. Bush joking and looking around for weapons of mass destruction (his omnicidal fabrication) at the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner in 2004.

Another memorable scene, one that uplifted the human spirit, was the personal exchange between Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) and Tomas while a recording of Tomas and Senator Byrd reading the list of those announced Senators who voted against the invasion of Iraq played in the background. Senator Byrd deemed these lawmakers “the immortal 23.”

After he receiv...

Americans 64 times more likely to be Murdered than die in Terrorism

Americans 64 times more likely to be Murdered than die in Terrorism | News in english | Scoop.it

The Institute for Economics and Peace in the UK has released a report on terrorism in 2013, which it maintains was substantially up.

There are virtues of the study. It shows that 80% of the victims of terrorism in the past year are Muslims living in just five countries– Nigeria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan. That is, by far the most numerous victims of terrorism are not Americans or Westerners but Muslims. Likewise terrorism is not very important in much of the world. In the UK a person is 166 times more likely to be the victim of criminal homicide than of terrorism. In the US, a person is 64 times more likely to be murdered than to be the victim of political terrorism.

Four groups, al-Qaeda, ISIL, the Taliban and Boko Haram, were responsible for the lion’s share of the deaths.

The study maintains that there were almost 18,000 deaths as a result of 10,000 terrorist attacks globally in 2013, saying that the number was up 61%.

Conceptually, though, I have to critique the study.

Most of these deaths attributed to terrorism are actually just signs of civil wars or regional rebellions. Syria and Iraq are having civil wars, and Afghanistan has a low-intens...

How the North Pole Could Become the World’s Next Battlefield | The Nation

As the climate warms and the ice melts, the Arctic could become the next great theater of global cooperation—or a battlefield.

Jamiehigginbotham II's curator insight, November 18, 2014 7:24 PM

Their is a claim that all northern countries bordering the Arctic, including the United States and China are in a huge battle over the ice land. Their has been a report of an increasing amount of ships in 2012 from 4 to 70 in 2014. since the Arctic holds 13 percent of the worlds oil and a variety amount of resources officials believe this will increase tensions between all states involved in this fight for more power. With alliances already starting to build this will cause more tensions leading up to what officials believe will be the next Cold War.

With the small increase in the amount of resources we use every day, i'm not surprise that their might be another major war like a second Cold war or WWIII. But with large amount of states participating in the world wide race theirs is bound to be more than one winner as alliances start to form.

#Police Expert: War on Terror Has Turned Cops into Occupying Armies — And We’re The Enemy - RawStory

#Police Expert: War on Terror Has Turned Cops into Occupying Armies — And We’re The Enemy - RawStory

By Travis Gettys

November 15, 2014 "ICH" - "Rawstory"- The war on terror has essentially turned police into occupying armies in some American communities, said a police and criminology expert.

Thomas Nolan, an associate professor of criminology at Merrimack College and former senior policy analyst with the Department of Homeland Security, said the focus of police work had shifted greatly since he was a Boston police officer in the 1980s and 1990s.

“I remember it being drilled into me as a police officer, as a sergeant and then as a lieutenant: partnership, problem-solving, and prevention – the three Ps,” Nolan said Wednesday during a panel sponsored by the American Constitution Society.

He said police were heavily trained to form alliances to help them to better serve and protect communities, and he said those relationships clearly don’t exist in Ferguson, Missouri.

While the war on drugs is frequently cited as a major factor in the breakdown of civil liberties and police-community relations, Nolan said a more recent shift was largely to blame.

“In the early 2000s, particularly after 9/11, we saw a paradigm shift from community policing and problem-oriented principles to the war on terror, and we became Homeland Security police,” said Nolan, who has worked in the federal agency’s Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

He said this shift toward “homeland security” had quickly destroyed the relationships police had worked nearly two decades to build.

“I think what has happened as a direct result of that, is that those relationships that we forged, and worked so hard to attain and to maintain in the late 1980s and early 1

Ukraine, Iran's nukes, the price of oil: There are ties worthy of a Bourne film, if the media connected the dots

By Patrick L. Smith

November 16, 2014 "ICH" - "Salon"- By way of events on the foreign side, the past few weeks start to resemble some once-in-a-while event in the heavens when everyone is supposed to go out and watch as the sun, moon and stars align. There are lots of things happening, and if we put them all together, the way Greek shepherds imagined constellations, a picture emerges. Time to draw the picture.

The situation on the ground in Ukraine is getting messy again. Equally, events of the past year now leave Ukraine’s economy not far from sheer extinction. You have not read of this because it does not fit the approved story, but Ukraine’s heart barely beats. Further east, we hear in the financial markets that the ruble’s decline brings Russia to the brink of another financial collapse.

Let’s see. Oil prices are now below $80 a barrel. It costs me nearly $20 less to put gasoline in my car than it did a year ago, and good enough. But why has the price of crude tumbled in so short an interval? It makes little sense when you gather the facts, and — goes without saying — you get no help with that fr
