Open Letter by Yasmine Motarjemi , Former Corporate Food Safety Manager (2000-2010), Assistant Vice President to Mr Peter Brabeck-Letmathe Chairman of the Board of Directors Nestlé, S.A 55 Avenue Nestlé CH-1800 Vevey
"Nyon, 4th Septembre 2010 Dear Mr Chairman, I was your Corporate Food Safety Manager from 2000 to 2010. I write to you today for two reasons: first, to share with you my concerns regarding a culture and management practices in Nestlé, which undermine food safety; and, second, to inform you of my personal experiences while attempting to improve the situation. I long nourished the hope that you would be interested in meeting the person responsible for dealing with everyday problems of the Company in an area as important as the safety of Nestlé products. However, to my regret we have never had the opportunity to meet and discuss the food safety situation in the Company. As both corporate-level management of food safety and my professional status deteriorated to the point of being unacceptable, I was compelled to report my concerns to Management with the expectation that a fair evaluation of the situation would be undertaken. In the event, my efforts were in vain. Mr Chairman, I always found listening to your speeches a source of motivation and inspiration. Moreover, Nestlé Policies and Management Principles portray a model Company, with the most laudable corporate values. A glance at the Company building, offices and facilities is enough to make any outsider believe that this is an ideal working environment. However, after only a short time, I was profoundly disappointed at how people are managed, the discrepancies between your public statements and the private deeds of managers; between the Company’s policies and management principles and actual practices; and between the proclaimed values and the prevailing fear culture (including mobbing and intimidation) that managers nourished. I was particularly saddened by the growing realisation that Management was not only aware of this situation but that it was also fully accepted by the very people who should have been, in fact, the inhouse guardians of policy compliance.I failed to see the flawless execution of policy that you promoted in your speeches. Didn’t you state that the management of food quality and safety depends on the quality of management? What can be said about food safety management when the members of Management themselves do not respect Company policies and principles? If I dared challenge the Company’s food safety and human resource practices I can assure you that it was not out of disrespect. On the contrary, it was because of my loyalty to the Company, my colleagues and the consumers we served. It was also because for me the safety of our products and respect for our colleagues were non-negotiable values. Involving staff in building a better company unavoidably includes exposing shortcomings. But surely it is better to receive timely feedback from within than to be publicly embarrassed later by failures. You have often expressed your commitment to food safety. Please allow me to share with you my own vision in this regard. Over and above the technical and scientific aspects, the foundation of good food safety management is an equitable system of people management that is based on professionalism, fairness, objectivity, open-mindedness, respect for staff and, most importantly, for their dignity. I regret to say that I failed to see this approach implemented at the Nestlé Head Office. My own situation is a case in point. On several occasions I reported – first to members of Management and then, in November 2009, to Mr Paul Bulcke – serious shortcomings in food safety management, the professional difficulties I faced, and the shameful treatment that I experienced in Nestlé. I hoped that I would be given the opportunity to provide a full and accurate account of events during the period 2005-2010. In response, my contract was terminated with no opportunity to provide details of my experience. Nevertheless, I am prepared to meet with you, at your convenience, to share my observations on practices in Nestlé and their eventual repercussions on Nestlé’s reputation and consumers. I would also hope to use this opportunity to identify an equitable solution for my personal difficult situation, another consequence of the past events in Nestlé" source : http://www.rts.ch/info/3989665.html/BINARY/Mr+CEO.pdf more here (in french) http://www.rts.ch/info/economie/3988696-une-ex-responsable-de-la-securite-alimentaire-depose-plainte-contre-nestle.html more again (in french) more (in german ) : http://www.handelszeitung.ch/unternehmen/nestle-im-keim-erstickt
THE #OBAMA APOLOGY REFLEX by the always excellent MentalUnrest
Once again, the US government got it wrong in a big way, and President Obama donned the hat of Apologizer in Chief. The transgression this time around is the US drone missile deaths of two American civilians during a rescue operation in Yemen.
Before that, the President gave a speech during the Selma march’s 50th anniversary which acknowledged America’s role in erecting barriers to racial equality…....
Which was preceeded by another apology from the President after US troops were caught burning Korans in Afghanistan….
An anteceding apology came from Obama after the Ed Snowden leaks revealed that the National Security Agency tapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone….

At a time of simmering geopolitical tensions, the concept of common security has become even more important. And while global nuclear zero has been a goal for decades, its realization remains elusive. How can national and non-state actors be brought to the table for the common good, and what is the best way of moving towards the elimination of nuclear as well as more conventional threats? Oksana is joined by Michael Moller, the Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament, to proliferate on these issues.

Canada’s Khan Resources (TSE:KRI) chairman Jim Doak, a prominent figure in the Toronto financial industry, was found dead in a hotel room, The Globe and Mail reported.
Doak (59), who appeared as an analyst on business channel BNN, was in Mongolia in his role as chairman of the Toronto-based uranium exploration and development company, which has been active in the Asian country since 1995.
According to a company statement, he had just finished a second series of meetings with representatives of the government of Mongolia.
“He was a very special and uniquely talented individual whose insights and decision-making abilities were off the scale,” said Khan’s president and CEO Grant Edey.
Based on the firm’s website, Khan was involved in the development of the Dornod uranium project in Mongolia and became embroiled in a dispute with the Mongolian government over the mining rights.
In 2011, Amazon Watch received a mysterious package from a Chevron whistleblower. No return address, just dozens of DVDs and a note: “I hope this is useful for you in the trial against Texaco/Chevron! Signed, a friend from Chevron.”

#Clinton Hid Link to #Russia n Donors - #energy NYTimes
She OK'd uranium mining deal.
The Clinton Foundation was linked to the Russian atomic energy agency's 2013 acquisition of a company that controls one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the U.S., The New York Times reported Thursday. Russian agency Rosatom took over Canadian company Uranium One, making it one of the world's largest uranium producers in three transactions from 2009 to 2013. Hillary Clinton was among those who signed off on the deal while she was Secretary of State. Canadian records also revealed that during these transactions leaders of the Canadian company gave donations to the Clinton Foundation, including $2.35 million from the Uranium One chairman's family foundation. Those donations were not made public despite Hillary's agreement with the White House to identify all donors. Just after Russia announced its plan to acquire a stake in Uranium One, former President Bill Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank linked to the Kremlin.

#THEquestion Why Does Money Flow Freely Across Borders but Refugees Die Trying?
Over the last couple of years, reports have flashed through the news cycles about hundreds of refugees drowning as they flee war and poverty, trying to reach Europe. This is a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions, yet it receives only periodic news coverage. Worse yet, the European Union is providing little more than lip service to prevent more refugees from dying; meet the needs of migrants; and address the postcolonial, neoliberal economic issues causing mass migration.
The Economist, hardly a bastion of progressivism, chastised the European Union on its generally indifferent response to the plight and deaths of the refugees. Its April 24 editorial, published after more than a thousand migrants drowned in the previous two weeks, stated:
The European Union likes to boast that it is a force for good. But in the past ten days as many as 1,200 boat people have drowned in the waters of the Mediterranean. An unknown number were refugees from Syria, Eritrea and Somalia fleeing war or persecution. They perished in part because the EU’s policy on asylum is a moral and political failure

Moscow’s current Middle East policy is characterized by, among other things, maintaining a strong focus on bilateral relations, striving to diversify or to develop relations with states that are at conflict and wishing to play a mediating role in conflict situations without claiming a monopoly or opposing other players, in particular the United Nations.
