Open Letter by
Yasmine Motarjemi , Former Corporate Food Safety Manager (2000-2010), Assistant Vice President
to
Mr Peter Brabeck-Letmathe
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Nestlé, S.A
55 Avenue Nestlé
CH-1800 Vevey

"Nyon, 4th Septembre 2010
Dear Mr Chairman,
I was your Corporate Food Safety Manager from 2000 to 2010. I write to you today for two reasons:
first, to share with you my concerns regarding a culture and management practices in Nestlé, which
undermine food safety; and, second, to inform you of my personal experiences while attempting to
improve the situation.
I long nourished the hope that you would be interested in meeting the person responsible for dealing
with everyday problems of the Company in an area as important as the safety of Nestlé products.
However, to my regret we have never had the opportunity to meet and discuss the food safety
situation in the Company. As both corporate-level management of food safety and my professional
status deteriorated to the point of being unacceptable, I was compelled to report my concerns to
Management with the expectation that a fair evaluation of the situation would be undertaken. In
the event, my efforts were in vain.
Mr Chairman, I always found listening to your speeches a source of motivation and inspiration.
Moreover, Nestlé Policies and Management Principles portray a model Company, with the most
laudable corporate values. A glance at the Company building, offices and facilities is enough to make
any outsider believe that this is an ideal working environment.
However, after only a short time, I was profoundly disappointed at how people are managed, the
discrepancies between your public statements and the private deeds of managers; between the
Company’s policies and management principles and actual practices; and between the proclaimed
values and the prevailing fear culture (including mobbing and intimidation) that managers nourished.
I was particularly saddened by the growing realisation that Management was not only aware of this
situation but that it was also fully accepted by the very people who should have been, in fact, the inhouse guardians of policy compliance.I failed to see the flawless execution of policy that you promoted in your speeches. Didn’t you state
that the management of food quality and safety depends on the quality of management? What can
be said about food safety management when the members of Management themselves do not
respect Company policies and principles?
If I dared challenge the Company’s food safety and human resource practices I can assure you that it
was not out of disrespect. On the contrary, it was because of my loyalty to the Company, my
colleagues and the consumers we served. It was also because for me the safety of our products and
respect for our colleagues were non-negotiable values. Involving staff in building a better company
unavoidably includes exposing shortcomings. But surely it is better to receive timely feedback from
within than to be publicly embarrassed later by failures.
You have often expressed your commitment to food safety. Please allow me to share with you my
own vision in this regard. Over and above the technical and scientific aspects, the foundation of
good food safety management is an equitable system of people management that is based on
professionalism, fairness, objectivity, open-mindedness, respect for staff and, most importantly, for
their dignity. I regret to say that I failed to see this approach implemented at the Nestlé Head Office.
My own situation is a case in point.
On several occasions I reported – first to members of Management and then, in November 2009, to
Mr Paul Bulcke – serious shortcomings in food safety management, the professional difficulties I
faced, and the shameful treatment that I experienced in Nestlé. I hoped that I would be given the
opportunity to provide a full and accurate account of events during the period 2005-2010. In
response, my contract was terminated with no opportunity to provide details of my experience.
Nevertheless, I am prepared to meet with you, at your convenience, to share my observations on
practices in Nestlé and their eventual repercussions on Nestlé’s reputation and consumers. I would
also hope to use this opportunity to identify an equitable solution for my personal difficult situation, another consequence of the past events in Nestlé"

#Saudi Officials Linked To Jihadist Group In #WikiLeaks Cables

Documents purport to show high-level contact between Saudis and Haqqani network.

ISLAMABAD—Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, had high-level contacts with America’s most deadly adversary in Afghanistan, the Haqqani network, according to purported Saudi diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks.

The documents, which couldn’t be independently verified, say the Saudi ambassador to Pakistan met in 2012 with Nasiruddin Haqqani, the chief fundraiser for the jihadist group who has been on a United Nations terrorism watch list since 2010.

In the meeting, Mr. Haqqani requested medical treatment in Saudi Arabia for his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the terrorist organization, the diplomatic correspondence says. The documents indicate the elder Haqqani carries a Saudi passport.

The Saudi embassy in Islamabad wasn’t available to comment, and Afghan officials didn’t immediately respond to the allegations. Senior U.S. officials said they were reviewing the reports but they had no immediate comment. Earlier this month, Osama Nugali, a Saudi foreign ministry spokesman, said that many of the documents published by WikiLeaks“have been clearly fabricated.” But he also said that the documents “didn’t give any information other than that formerly announced by the ministry” on international or regional issues.

Washington’s ties with Saudi Arabia have been strained for years over U.S. concerns that funding for the Afghan insurgency and other terrorist groups in the Middle East comes from donors in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations. Successive U.S. administrations have been careful not to accuse Gulf governments of complicity in sponsoring terrorism, however.

A document dated Feb. 15, 2012, and signed by the then-Saudi envoy to Islamabad, Amb.Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Saleh Al Ghadeer, says the diplo..

The Problem With #HumanRights Organizations - #HRW #HumanRightsWatch #PentagonePuppets

by NEVE GORDON - NICOLA PERUGINI

When Israel is criticized about its rights-abusive policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the refrain most often heard among local politicians is that the government’s hasbara—the Israeli propaganda machine—is inadequate. The problem, in other words, is not what Israel actually does to the Palestinians, but rather the inability to get its positive message across to the international community. This is usually referred to as “rebranding Israel”. The underlying assumption here is that the merchandise is fine, and only the packaging needs to be replaced.

Rachel Krys’ recent argument about the crisis of human rights is based on a similar logic, even though she is writing about a different issue. She tells us that most people in the UK do not support human rights, while arguing that this is happening because human rights are presented in a way that is disconnected from people’s everyday lives. She claims that if the public would hear less “negative discourse” about human rights and more “stories about old people challenging bad treatment, invasive decisions or the intrusion into their private and family life”, support for human rights would be much wider. Once again the problem with human rights has to do with perceptions, and the solution, here as well, is hasbara.

The relationship between representation and reality is, however, much more complex. It has to do with human rights themselves: the way they have been inst(...)

One #UN officer killed in #ArabiaSaudi coalition airstrike in #Yemen - And now, the UN will still support #ArabiaSaudi war?

The UN Secretary-General "deplores" the Saudi Arabia-led coalition's airstrike yesterday (28 Jun) on the UN compound in Aden, Yemen which resulted "in serious damage to the UN Development Programme office and injured a guard."

The Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told journalists in New York today that "the Secretary-General urges a full investigation into this incident and that anyone found to be responsible for any breaches be held accountable."

Sunday 28 August, the Saudi Arabia-led coalition launched an airstrike on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) compound in Aden, Yemen injuring a guard and causing extensive damage.

#Europe’s Attack on #Greece Democracy by #JosephStiglitz (Nobel Price in #Economics 2001)

NEW YORK – The rising crescendo of bickering and acrimony within Europe might seem to outsiders to be the inevitable result of the bitter endgame playing out between Greece and its creditors. In fact, European leaders are finally beginning to reveal the true nature of the ongoing debt dispute, and the answer is not pleasant: it is about power and democracy much more than money and economics.

The Lonely American: #ChrisHedges - Truthdig

Michael P. Printup, president of Watkins Glen International, one of the country’s largest racetracks, stood with a group of about a dozen race fans at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Next to him were boxes of free doughnuts and coffee. A line of men with towels, who had spent the night in nearby RV campers, pop-up campers and tents, stood patiently outside the door to a shower room. A light drizzle, one that would turn into a torrential downpour and lead to the races being canceled in the afternoon, coated the group, all middle-aged or older white men. They were discussing, amid the high-pitched whine of cars practicing on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit racetrack, the aging demographic of race fans and the inability to lure a new generation to the sport.

“Maybe if you installed chargers for phones around the track they would come,” suggested one gray-haired man.

But it is not just sporting events. Public lectures, church services, labor unions, Veterans of Foreign Wars halls, Masonic halls, Rotary clubs, the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, Grange Hall meetings, the League of Women Voters, Daughters of the American Revolution, local historical societies, town halls, bowling leagues, bridge clubs, movie theater attendance (at a 20-year low), advocacy groups such as the NAACP and professional and amateur theatrical and musical performances cater to a dwindling and graying population. No one is coming through the door to take the place of the old members. A generation has fallen down the rabbit hole of electronic hallucinations—with images often dominated by violence and pornography. They have become, in the words of the philosopher Hannah Arendt, “atomized,” sucked alone into systems of information and entertainment that cater to America’s prurient fascination with the tawdry, the cruel and the deadening cult of the self.

The entrapment in a world of nonstop electronic sounds and images, begun with the phonograph and radio, advanced by cinema and television and perfected by video games, the Internet and hand-held devices, is making it impossible to build relationships and structures that are vital for civic engagement and resistance to corporate power. We have been transformed into commodities. The steady decline of the white male heaven that is NASCAR—which has stopped publishing the falling attendance at its tracks and at some speedways has begun to tear down bleachers—is ominous. It is the symbol of a captive society.

“We don’t see the youth coming in,” Printup said. “The millennial, the younger adults 18 to 35, is our target. We spend millions of dollars a year to target that group. But it’s hard. Look around. Who’s the youngest person here? That’s our problem. Every sport from the NFL to NHL is struggling with the 18 to 35 demographic. They call them weird. They call them difficult. They only want to look at their computers.”

Printup’s parent company, the International Speedway Corp. (ISC), has invested significant sums to reach this demographic with little to show for it.

“We have a digital firm that represents nearly all our tracks in the ISC,” he went on, noting that Watkins Glen, which drew about 16,000 fans this past weekend, is one of the few exceptions to the decline in numbers. “The digital platform is about the only way you can get to them. We target them. We buy lists. We hire an agency that tracks their Web and Internet interactions. If they bring up racing, we want to be there. When a kid Googles ‘Ferrari—racing—sports car’ we are one of the top 10 lists. We pay for that. It is not cheap. That’s how you have got to get these kids. But it’s not working the way it should.”

Robert D. Putnam pointed out the decline of independent civic engagement, or what he called our “social capital,” in his book “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community.” He noted that o(...)

They got their meeting at the White House that month, and the two doctors laid out the case for single-payer to the first lady. “She said, ‘You make a convincing case, but is there any force on the face of the earth that could counter the hundreds of millions of the dollars the insurance industry would spend fighting that?’” recalled Himmelstein. “And I said, “How about the president of the United States actually leading the American people?’ and she said, ‘Tell me something real.’”

This is important information for people to know about Clinton, especially now that she’s running for president claiming to want to engage in “Four Fights.” It suggests what she really has planned is Four Thrown Fights. (Himmelstein and Stephanie Woolhandler don’t remember anything more about this part of their meeting, and Sanders hasn’t responded to my questions about it.)

II.- After over three years of judici

most amazing #crowdfunding : 3 Euros per European and PEOPLE will save #Greece

Let's just get Greece sorted

All this dithering over Greece is getting boring. European ministers flexing their muscles and posturing over whether they can help the Greek people of not. Why don't we the people just sort it instead?

The European Union is home to 503 million people, if we all just chip in a few Euro then we can get Greece sorted and hopefully get them back on track soon. Easy.

What We Need & What You Get

€1.6bn is what the Greeks need. It might seem like a lot but it's only just over €3 from each European. That's about the same as half a pint in London. Or everyone in the EU just having a Feta and Olive salad for lunch.

So come on, order a Feta and Olive salad, maybe wash it down with an Ouzo or glass of Assyrtiko greek wine and let's sort this shit out.

Pledge €3 and get a postcard sent from Greece of Alex Tsipras, the Greek Prime Minister. We'll get them made and posted in Greece and give a boost to some local printers and post offices.

Pledge €6 and get a greek Feta and Olive salad

Pledge €10 and get a small bottle of Ouzo sent to you

Pledge €25 and get a bottle of Greek wine

Is that really all it would take?OK, it might be a short while for the cash to get fully into the Greek economy, but hell - what is there to lose? Another Tesco Meal deal? Ah well.

You get some tasty Greek things.

We promise that all profits will go to the Greek people and all products will be 100% Greek.

FAQs and Press/MediaSince this has been covered in the media and gone fantastically well so far, I've been asked a lot of questions. I've tried to answer some more below:

Who are you?

I'm 29 years old and from York, Yorkshire in the North of England but live in Bethnal Green, London. I currently work in a shoe shop in London.

Is this a joke?

No. I can understand why people might take it as a joke, but Crowdfunding can really help because it's just a case of getting on and doing it. I was fed up of the Greek crisis going round in circles, while politicians are dithering, this is affecting real people. While all the posturing is going on, then it's easy for the politicians to forget that. I just thought, sod it, I'll have a crack.

How has the campaign been received?

I've been overwhelmed by the response, it’s been incredibly positive. I’ve received so many tweets, emails and messages of support and thanks.

Are you just making a statement/some kind of point?

I’m not just making a statement, this is a real attempt to do something. But at the very least it's important to raise the issue of the plight of the Greek people at this time. Not just the profiles of politiicians. We can help our Greek cousins by buying wonderful Greek produce such as feta, olives, wine and more. And maybe considering Greece as a holiday destination. That's part of the idea behind each of the perks on the crowdfunding page. Trade will help Greece and the Greek people out of their current situation.

Why are you no longer offering a Greek island?

There was a small Greek Island on offer for anyone who came in with €1.6bn, I thought that Mr Tsipras would happily accept that but IndieGoGo emailed me to say that as the Greek Government had not officially agreed to this, I wasn't allowed to offer it. A Greek lady emailed to say that she found that perk offensive, which I apologised profusely for, I certainly didn't mean offence. I was only thinking something about the size of Inchmarnock off the coast of Scotland, which I'd definitely sell if it saved the British economy.

Have you been involved in Greek Politics before?

I've never been involved in Greek politics. I see the campaign as more of a helping the Greek people than getting involved with politics.

Have you been in touch with European or Greek leaders.

I've not yet been in touch with any European leaders, but I heard a rumour from a journalist that Mr Tsipras wanted to get in touch.

Do you have any link to IndieGoGo?

I've never been involved with IndieGoGo before.

What happens if you don’t make the target?

All the money is refunded. Hopefully we’ll make it though!

Are the products real or symbolic?

It’s not symbolic - all products would be sourced from Greece, made in Greece and sent from Greece.

Do you think Europeans are generous enough?

Europeans are pretty generous on the whole, maybe Ms Merkel and Mr Cameron are the exception. There are 500 million people in the EU and actually, it wouldn't cost each person much to just sort it out ourselves. I'm confident the people of Europe will get this campaign and some time soon we'll all be raising a glass of Ouzo and having a bloody great big celebration.

What will happen to the money?

We promise that all profits will go to the Greek people. Whether that be via the government accepting it or by other means.

How can the Greek government accept your money?

That's one for IndieGoGo to help me with! Thought I suspect that there'll be plenty of people, better qualified than I am, that would be willing to help.

Do you think that you can reach the target?

I hope very much that the campaign will reach the target, I think it will be a victory for people power. Yes it's a tall order but I truly believe it can be effective, remember it's a very small amount per person we're looking for.

Will you go to Greece to send the postcards?!

I'd love to go to Greece to send the postcards myself. The postcards and salads would be put together in Greece, employing Greeks and contributing to the Greek economy.

How much have you personally put in?

I've put in for a bottle of Ouzo, which is just €10 - if 1 in 3 Europeans did the same, we'd get to the target!

June 30, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "Activist Post" - When researchers such as myself have reported that the United States is funding al-Qaeda, Nusra, ISIS and other related terror organizations in Syria, we were not kidding. Still, despite the fact that even the U.S. government itself has admitted that it was funding terrorists directly and indirectly through Saudi Arabia, the suggestion was met with disbelief, ridicule, or either entirely ignored.

Now, however, the United States government has admitted that it funds terrorists on the ground in Syria yet again, this time placing an individual dollar amount on the assistance provided.

According to the Pentagon, Syrian “rebels” being trained and “vetted” by the United States are receiving “compensation” to the tune of anywhere between $250 to $400 per month to act as America’s proxy forces in the Middle East. Reuters reports that the payment levels were

#HumanRightsWatch in #Venezuela #HRW (archive 2008)  #FalseNGO #NGO #CIA #NED #Humanitarian #Humanitaire

By James Petras

28/09/08 "
ICH " -- - Human Rights Watch, a US-based group claiming to be a non-governmental organization, but which is in fact funded by government-linked quasi-private foundations and a Congressional funded political propaganda organization, the National Endowment for Democracy, has issued a report “A Decade Under Chavez: Political Intolerance and Lost Opportunities for Advancing Human Rights in Venezuela” (9/21/2008 hrw.org). The publication of the “Report” directed by Jose Miguel Vivanco and sub-director Daniel Walkinson led to their expulsion from Venezuela for repeated political-partisan intervention in the internal affairs of the country.

A close reading of the “Report” reveals an astonishing number of blatant falsifications and outright fabrications, glaring deletions of essential facts, deliberate omissions of key contextual and comparative considerations and especially a cover-up of systematic long-term, large-scale security threats to Venezuelan democracy posed by Washington.

We will proceed by providing some key background facts about HRW and Vivanco in order to highlight their role and relations to US imperial power. We will then comment on their methods, data collection and exposition. We will analyze each of HRW charges and finally proceed to evaluate their truth and propaganda value.

Background on Vivanco and HRW

Jose Miguel Vivanco served as a diplomatic functionary under the bloody Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet between 1986-1989, serving no less as the butcher’s rabid apologist before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. His behavior was particularly egregious during the regime’s brutal repression of a mass popular uprising in the squatter settlements of Santiago in 1986-1987. With the return of electoral politics (democracy) in Chile, Vivanco took off to Washington where he set up his own NGO, the Center for Justice and International Law, disguising his right-wing affinities and passing himself off as a ‘human rights’ advocate. In 1994 he was recruited by former US federal prosecutor, Kenneth Roth, to head up the ‘Americas Division’ of Human Rights Watch. HRW demonstrated a real capacity to provide a ‘human rights’ gloss to President Clinton’s policy of ‘humanitarian imperialism’. Roth promoted and supported Clinton’s two-month bombing, destruction and dismemberment of Yugoslavia. HRW covered up the ethnic cleansing of Serbs in Kosovo by the notorious Albanian terrorists and gangsters of the Kosovo Liberation Army and the unprecedented brutal transfer of over 200,000 ethnic Serbs from the Krajina region of Croatia. HRW backed Clinton’s sanctions against Iraq leading to the deaths of over 500,000 Iraqi children. Nowhere did the word ‘genocide’ ever appear in reference to the US Administrations massive destruction of Iraq causing hundreds of thousands of premature deaths.

HRW supported the US invasion and occupation of Afghanistan where Kenneth Roth advised the US generals on how to secure the colonial occupation by avoiding massive civilian deaths. In words and deeds, HRW has played an insidious role as backer and adviser of US imperial intervention, providing the humanitarian ideological cover while issuing harmless and inconsequential reports criticizing ‘ineffective’ excesses, which ‘undermine’ imperial dominance.

HRW most notorious intervention was its claim that Israel’s murderous destruction of the Palestinian city of Jenin was ‘not genocidal’ and thus provided the key argument for the US and Israeli blocking of a UN humanitarian mission and investigative report. As in all of its ‘research’ their report was deeply colored by selective interviews and observations which understated the brutality and killings of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli state – even while the fanatics who run the major pro-Israel organizations accused HRW of bias for even mentioning a single murdered Palestinian.

Method

HRW currently makes a big play of its widespread interviews of a broad cross section of Venezuelan political and civic society government and opposition groups, as well as its consultation of most available documents. Yet the Report on Venezuela does not reflect anything of the sort. There is no careful, straightforward presentation of the government’s elaboration and justification for its actions, no academic critiques of the anti-democratic actions of anti-Chavez mass media; no discussion of the numerous journalists’ accounts which expose systematic US intervention. The Report simply records and reproduces uncritically the claims, arguments and charges of the principle publicists of

In the latest round of Middle East weapons purchases, France and Saudi Arabia just inked an arms deal worth several billion dollars. This deal, however, stands apart from the other, more garden-variety multi-billion dollar deals for advanced jets and ships in that the package includes feasibility studies for two nuclear reactors, as well as professional training on both nuclear safety and waste treatment, according to a report from Defense News.

For those of you keeping score at home, this Saudi-French nuclear deal goes up on the scoreboard with a recent Saudi-Russian deal. Then there's last month's announcement that South Korea and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement for a feasibility study for building two reactors worth a total of $2 billio(...)

A new mosque has opened in Doha’s ‘Education City’ alongside U.S. university campuses. But what it’s teaching is the hate that’s on the ISIS curriculum.

ISTANBUL — The glamorous and sophisticated wife of the former emir of Qatar and mother of the current ruler is famous for glitzy globetrotting philanthropy. Hardly a week goes by without her being pictured rubbing shoulders with Western Royals and Hollywood superstars. But while promoting world peace and education for children born into poverty, Sheikha Mozah also provides patronage for Sunni clerics whose views wouldn’t be out of place in ISIS-controlled Mosul or Raqqa.

The inconsistency in the roles of Sheikha Mozah, the publicity-friendly face of the richest little emirate in the world, highlights the deep contradictions at the heart of Qatar, which occupies a spit of desert jutting into the Persian Gulf.

The emirate’s ruling family has been keen to leverage fabulous natural-gas-based wealth into lasting regional and international influence, and to establish Qatar as a modern state and Western ally. It is home to the biggest American military installation in the Gulf. Bu(...)

British Lord Accused of Raping Boys Inside Parliament  #pédophilie #politique

New charges against a member of the House of Lords claim he violated and tortured children—even inside the highest government offices. Why isn’t he being prosecuted?

LONDON — A current member of Britain’s House of Lords “violated, raped, and tortured” children inside the Houses of Parliament, it was claimed last night in one of the most shocking accusations yet to be heard in the country’s growing VIP sex-abuse scandal.

Britain’s public prosecutor ruled earlier this year that similar cases of sexual assault should not be brought against the alleged perpetrator, Lord Janner, because he was suffering from dementia. Police recommended the Labour Lord face trial on charges of six rapes and 16 sexual assaults alleged to have taken place between 1969 and 1998, but prosecutors decided the 86-year-old was unfit to stand trial.

The alleged child-abuse victims, some of whom say they were attacked by Janner as boys, say they believe the politician is being protected as part of an establishment cover-up, designed to protect Britain’s rich and powerful from the full force of the law, which continues to this day.

The horrific scale of sexual abuse against children carried out by powerful figures in British public life was laid bare last month, when police officers disclosed that they were investigating allegations against 76 politicians and almost 250 “persons of public prominence.” More than 100,000 alleged attacks have been catalogued by detectives since the police launched a series of inquiries into sexual abuse by people in positions of power.

Despite the public inquiry and police investigations, campaigners argue that British leaders are still trying to hide the worst of the abuse that has been perpetrated against children and teenagers over decades. Britain’s libel and defamation laws, which are some of the fiercest in the world, have also prevented victims from speaking out against their attackers.

Simon Danczuk, a Labour member of Parliament, used the legal shelter provided by the House of Commons on Tuesday night to publicly accuse Janner of sexually abusing young boys—without the risk of being sued.

“I have met Leicestershire p(...)
