Open Letter by
Yasmine Motarjemi , Former Corporate Food Safety Manager (2000-2010), Assistant Vice President
to
Mr Peter Brabeck-Letmathe
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Nestlé, S.A
55 Avenue Nestlé
CH-1800 Vevey

"Nyon, 4th Septembre 2010
Dear Mr Chairman,
I was your Corporate Food Safety Manager from 2000 to 2010. I write to you today for two reasons:
first, to share with you my concerns regarding a culture and management practices in Nestlé, which
undermine food safety; and, second, to inform you of my personal experiences while attempting to
improve the situation.
I long nourished the hope that you would be interested in meeting the person responsible for dealing
with everyday problems of the Company in an area as important as the safety of Nestlé products.
However, to my regret we have never had the opportunity to meet and discuss the food safety
situation in the Company. As both corporate-level management of food safety and my professional
status deteriorated to the point of being unacceptable, I was compelled to report my concerns to
Management with the expectation that a fair evaluation of the situation would be undertaken. In
the event, my efforts were in vain.
Mr Chairman, I always found listening to your speeches a source of motivation and inspiration.
Moreover, Nestlé Policies and Management Principles portray a model Company, with the most
laudable corporate values. A glance at the Company building, offices and facilities is enough to make
any outsider believe that this is an ideal working environment.
However, after only a short time, I was profoundly disappointed at how people are managed, the
discrepancies between your public statements and the private deeds of managers; between the
Company’s policies and management principles and actual practices; and between the proclaimed
values and the prevailing fear culture (including mobbing and intimidation) that managers nourished.
I was particularly saddened by the growing realisation that Management was not only aware of this
situation but that it was also fully accepted by the very people who should have been, in fact, the inhouse guardians of policy compliance.I failed to see the flawless execution of policy that you promoted in your speeches. Didn’t you state
that the management of food quality and safety depends on the quality of management? What can
be said about food safety management when the members of Management themselves do not
respect Company policies and principles?
If I dared challenge the Company’s food safety and human resource practices I can assure you that it
was not out of disrespect. On the contrary, it was because of my loyalty to the Company, my
colleagues and the consumers we served. It was also because for me the safety of our products and
respect for our colleagues were non-negotiable values. Involving staff in building a better company
unavoidably includes exposing shortcomings. But surely it is better to receive timely feedback from
within than to be publicly embarrassed later by failures.
You have often expressed your commitment to food safety. Please allow me to share with you my
own vision in this regard. Over and above the technical and scientific aspects, the foundation of
good food safety management is an equitable system of people management that is based on
professionalism, fairness, objectivity, open-mindedness, respect for staff and, most importantly, for
their dignity. I regret to say that I failed to see this approach implemented at the Nestlé Head Office.
My own situation is a case in point.
On several occasions I reported – first to members of Management and then, in November 2009, to
Mr Paul Bulcke – serious shortcomings in food safety management, the professional difficulties I
faced, and the shameful treatment that I experienced in Nestlé. I hoped that I would be given the
opportunity to provide a full and accurate account of events during the period 2005-2010. In
response, my contract was terminated with no opportunity to provide details of my experience.
Nevertheless, I am prepared to meet with you, at your convenience, to share my observations on
practices in Nestlé and their eventual repercussions on Nestlé’s reputation and consumers. I would
also hope to use this opportunity to identify an equitable solution for my personal difficult situation, another consequence of the past events in Nestlé"

Will #US Government Be Made to Answer for Fueling #Yemen's Approaching Famine? #humanitarian

With Yemen on the verge of famine, and civilians paying a devastating toll in the relentless Saudi-led bombing campaign, one key question emerges: Will the U.S. government ever be held to account for its role in the crisis?

The United Nations warned Wednesday that the country of 26 million faces the highest-level humanitarian emergency—on par with Iraq, Syria, and South Sudan.

The grim assessment adds to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's call on Wednesday for an immediate halt to the fighting, or at the very least, a "pause in hostilities until the end of the holy month of Ramadan so that humanitarian aid can be delivered into and across Yemen and reach people cut off from vital supplies for months."

As of now, nearly 13 million people are "not able to meet their food needs," and 15 million "have no healthcare and outbreaks of dengue and malaria are raging unchecked," said the UN in another statement this week.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, UN envoy for Yemen, warned last week that the country is "one step" from famine.

"Children are not being vaccinated—either because health centres do not have electricity or the fuel they need to keep vaccines cold and distribute them, or because parents are too frightened by the fighting to take their children to receive vaccinations," said Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF regional dir

The Israeli-Palestinian peace process has all but collapsed, and coupled with an outgoing US President and growing regional instability, the political and diplomatic climate doesn’t seem conducive to a breakthrough. Is it time to draw a line on decades of failed negotiations, and what framework could provide the best chance of success? Oksana is joined by Riyad al-Maliki, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the State of Palestine, to negotiate these issues.

WikiLeaks also released documents claiming Riyadh had contacts with one of the most dangerous rivals of the United States in Afghanistan.

According to documents leaked by WikiLeaks, a secret treaty among Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia shows they intended to overthrow the Syrian government. The revelation came from Julian Assange, the founder of the controversial website.

Assange claimed to a Russian TV channel Sunday that the secret deal had been signed by the Gulf nations in 2012. He added that Western powers like France, Britain and the United States were also involved in the secret agreement.

However, Assange said that U.S. allies in the Middle East acted in a more hostile manner. Saudi Arabia even acted against Washington’s instructions, Press TV reported.

http://democracynow.org - The FBI is launching an investigation into fires set at seven different African-American churches in seven days. So far none of the blazes have been labeled as hate crimes, but investigators say at least three fires were caused by arson. The fires began on June 21, just days after the Charleston massacre, and have occurred in six different states: Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Ohio. We are joined by Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has been tracking these most recent fires.

The Fight Over #Obamacare Was a Giant Political Charade: Sonali Kolhatkar - Truthdig

Now that the Supreme Court has preserved the Affordable Care Act and private insurers have won, the real battle for single-payer health care must begin.
- 2015/07/02

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 25 that the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) subsidies for health insurance for the poor were indeed constitutional, liberals cheered. The last-ditch attempt by the right to gut President Obama’s signature act failed. In his weekly address, Obama triumphantly announced that “after more than fifty votes in Congress to repeal or weaken this law; after a Presidential election based in part on preserving or repealing this law; after multiple challenges to this law before the Supreme Court, we can now say this for certain: the Affordable Care Act still stands, it is working, and it is here to stay.”

The case at the heart of the ruling was King v. Burwell, a legal challenge that was based on a technicality. The Los Angeles Times explained that legal experts saw it “as a fatuous misreading of the law and a tortured effort to bend the process of statutory interpretation for ideological ends.” But the constant attacks on the ACA, including this last attempt, were less ideological than political, and in the end, the Supreme Court ruling was an affirmation of the supremacy of capitalism over human needs.

It is true that 6.4 million Americans currently receiving subsidies for insurance would have lost their coverage had the court not voted to preserve the ACA. The vote was 6-3, with conservative Chief Justice John Roberts joining swing voter Anthony Kennedy and the four liberal stalwarts (Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Stephen Breyer). The fact that Roberts voted for it, and wrote the majority opinion, speaks volumes about what the ruling really means. According to him, “Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them.”

That single sentence clearly lays out the problem with what the right has sardonically named “Obamacare.” In voting to preserve the health care reform law, the court sought to “improve health insurance markets,” not access to health care.

"When it comes to filling a venue, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is not exactly 2016's underdog.

Sanders, who is running as a progressive alternative to presumed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, spoke Wednesday at Madison's Alliant Energy Center, which seats 10,231 people. The campaign had expected a massive turnout in the left-leaning city, which has deep roots in progressive politics and activism. Their prediction was correct: Arena staff said 9,600 people were in attendance.

"Tonight, we have more people at any meeting for a candidate of president of the United States than any other candidate," Sanders said, according to the Associated Press, who put the turnout at 10,000."

Oren's memoir reveals #israel 's elite is hyper-sensitive to #US criticism

Michael Oren’s new book about his years as Israel’s ambassador to the United States will — accidentally for him — turn out to be a big boost to the nonviolent movement for justice in Israel/Palestine. I have read every word, and I hope it reaches the best-seller lists and stays there, as an inadvertent but accurate account of  how Israel’s power elite truly thinks and acts. The book is an extraordinarily revealing look into the highest echelons of the Israeli government, and Oren’s own animosities have prompted him to tell more than he may have intended.

The book is called Ally, and subtitled My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide. A better subtitle would be How Israel’s Government Disrespects Americans, Particularly American Jews, But Is Still Ultra-Sensitive to Criticism.

First reports have already jumped on a couple of Oren’s more ludicrous assertions, such as that President Obama is too soft on “Muslims” because his two Muslim fathers abandoned him, and that American Jewish journalists are too hard on Israel because they are afraid of anti-Semitism if they don’t criticize it. But there are plenty more juicy cherries to be picked from this particular tree.

Let’s start with Oren’s clash with the late Bob Simon, the CBS reporter who stood out as genuine and honest amid the timid mediocrity of most

Ajoutée le 2 juil. 2015

http://democracynow.org - In the latest allegations of child sex abuse by Western troops in the countries they are supposed to be protecting, France has suspended two soldiers accused of sexually abusing two children in Burkina Faso. The soldiers reportedly filmed themselves abusing one of the victims, a five-year-old girl. The suspension of the French soldiers comes weeks after it emerged the U.N. failed to investigate allegations of sexual exploitation of children by French troops in the Central African Republic. Even after the exploitation was brought to the attention of senior U.N. officials, the U.N. never reported it to French authorities — nor did it do anything to immediately stop the abuse. A forthcoming report by the U.N.’s Office of Internal Oversight Services says peacekeepers frequently engage in "transactional sex," forcing impoverished citizens to perform sexual acts in exchange for food and medication. We are joined by Paula Donovan, co-director of AIDS-Free World. Her group has launched the Code Blue campaign, which seeks to end the sexual exploitation and abuse by United Nations military and nonmilitary peacekeeping personnel.
