Newport is the location of several large institutions, including the U.S. Naval Base Newport and its 50 service sectors, including the United States Naval War College. Additionally, the City is home to the Newport Hospital, Salve Regina University, and the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS). These institutions are among Newport's larger employers.

Since its founding by English settlers in 1639, Newport has bustled with diversity. The policy of liberty of conscience and religion embodied in the Newport Town Statutes of 1641 was a result of the religious beliefs of its founders and their frustration over political intervention in their religious life in Boston. This policy was a beacon to settlers with wide-ranging religious beliefs, who came primarily from other colonies at first, and co-existed in the rapidly growing settlement, unaware that their town’s religious diversity was a prototype of the America to come.

Breathing New Life into Rhode Island’s Oldest Surviving House of Worship | Newport, RI | Scoop.it

Built in 1699, the Great Friends Meeting House received significant alterations/additions in 1705, 1729, 1807, 1857 and 1867, mainly to accommodate a growing congregation and the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends. As membership in the Society of Friends declined during the early 1900’s, the building fell into disuse and disrepair. In 1973, the Meeting House was privately restored and was subsequently placed under the aegis of the Newport Historical Society.

By 1776, several thousand African slaves lived, work and eventually died in this New England seaport. At the peak of the Colonial Period they comprised nearly one third of the total town population with one in three Newport families owning at least one slave.
