This is an interesting article. I particularly like how library cards in Denmarks can also be used to access health services.
wildswans's comment, September 17, 2013 10:17 PM
Indeed. We had a conversation with the the Danish librarian and what's amazing is the level of trust - trust in the people which enabled them to expand their service hours beyond staff working hours.
nickcarman's comment, September 17, 2013 10:21 PM
I think that is just good management. From my experience, a good manager treats his or her staff like adults and trusts them to get on with the job. This isn't always the case unfortunately!

If you have worked in any educational environment from elementary school, higher education, or corporate training, then you have had students who consistently struggle with a topic, skill, or prerequisite knowledge that they must learn in order to be successful. Likewise, many of those same students struggle to motivate themselves to learn the material they are struggling with.

A Ridiculous ‘Triple-dog-dare’ to Peter Thiel

A Ridiculous ‘Triple-dog-dare’ to Peter Thiel | after sliced bread... | Scoop.it
The trouble for higher education (and society) is that spending $100,000 or more for a degree that merely allows you a chance at such jobs as retail sales person or customer service representative is unsustainable. As soon as employers generally accept a more reliable, less costly means for screening applicants than possession of a degree, demand for college will plunge.

Three Trends That Will Influence Learning and Teaching in 2015

Three Trends That Will Influence Learning and Teaching in 2015 | after sliced bread... | Scoop.it

Here are three trends: 1) Skill-specific education also known as competency-based education (CBE). 2) Social learning facilitated by technology and the acceptance of MOOCs is a new and viable instructional method, and 3) Learning-on-the-go supported not just by mobile devices and internet connectivity, but by the availability of sophisticated applications forflexible access to education.

There is no doubt that technology plays a major role on how our schools will embrace the future, with many lessons to learn along the way.  Understanding what the future holds, what will work in a South African context and where to start are some of the key factors that needs bearing in mind.

Trey Wright's curator insight, January 2, 2:40 PM

These trends will surely continue to stay on the rise, with improving the ease, access and experience for student learning.

What does higher-ed look like in 2023?

What does higher-ed look like in 2023? | after sliced bread... | Scoop.it

In 2023, students could have more learning options than ever before, and more software to help them make sense of those options — from picking a college to finding their first job. That begs the question, then: In a future where at least a quarter of universities may not even exist, where does faculty fit in?

"A seemingly alarmist prediction from Harvard business professor Clayton Christensen gaining traction among some educators states that more than half of universities will be in bankruptcy within 15 years. Michael Horn, co-founder of the Clayton Christensen Institute, recently made a similar prediction, but provided a slightly more optimistic number of 25 percent."

How to Disappear from the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC]

How to Disappear from the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC] | after sliced bread... | Scoop.it

The amount of information available online has gotten out of hand. Everything about our lives, from where where we went to high school and what we ate for breakfast this morning, can be found on the internet. If you think that's bad, think about children growing up today – their entire lives, from infancy through middle school, are being documented by their parents on Facebook!

Privacy just doesn't exist online anymore; it can take drastic measures to delete ourselves from the internet, but here's a step-by-step guide for those who want to do so...
