Soon, Students May Learn to Code Instead of Taking French Class - BloombergBusiness | New technology | Scoop.it
Parlez-vous Java? Sprechen Sie Python?

At least four states -- including Washington, home of Microsoft Corp. -- have either passed or considered measures that would delight high school students who have trouble rolling their r's. Rather than taking Spanish to satisfy their foreign language requirement, they could take a computer language.

Chris Reykdal, a Washington state legislator, said many  students are more passionate about learning code than conjugating verbs. "I just don't like one size fits all,'' he said. "

4 Best Apps for Sharing Large Files Instantly - MakeUseOf.com

4 Best Apps for Sharing Large Files Instantly - MakeUseOf.com | New technology | Scoop.it
We’ve all been there. You’ve spent hours curating a document, editing a video, or photoshopping an image, only to be told the file is too large to send as an attachment via email. Of course, if you want to share the file locally, you can easily load it onto a flash drive — but what about if you need to send it to a friend or colleague on the other side of the world?

It used to be a nightmare scenario, and although web-based file transfer services started to become popular in the tail-end of the last decade, they were still slow, cumbersome, and frequently failed. Thankfully, the advent of smartphones has helped streamline the process, and there are now a plethora of apps that let you share large files directly from your Android device.

Here we look at the best options for you."

Free Technology for Teachers: Office Lens - Digitize Handwritten Notes and Diagrams

Free Technology for Teachers: Office Lens - Digitize Handwritten Notes and Diagrams | New technology | Scoop.it
Office Lens is a new app for iOS and Android (still in limited beta) designed for converting pictures of notes on whiteboards and paper into notes that can be edited in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. If you don't need to edit the notes that your take pictures of, you can simply export the file created by Office Lens to JPEG or PDF. Probably the neatest aspect of Office Lens is that hand-drawn images and figures captured through the app can be separated from the text to move and manipulate as individual objects in PowerPoint slides

How Digital Games Help Teachers Make Connections to Lessons and Students - Mind/Shift

How Digital Games Help Teachers Make Connections to Lessons and Students - Mind/Shift | New technology | Scoop.it
t’s not unusual for educators to use analog games in the classroom, but as more classrooms gain access to technology, digital games are also making a strong showing. A recent Joan Ganz Cooney Center survey of 694 K-8 teachers found that 74 percent of those surveyed use digital games in the classroom, up from 50 percent two years ago. Many of the teachers finding the most success are good at creatively connecting the game back to the curriculum, while allowing it to maintain the qualities of a good game. These teachers are often more comfortable with games themselves, playing for fun in their spare time, and are thus more likely to see valuable classroom connections. It’s one thing to have empirical evidence that digital games are growing in popularity and another to get an in-depth look at how and why teachers see them as a valuable use of precious class time.

Weebly releases website-creation app for iPad | New technology | Scoop.it
To think they used to say that one couldn’t do real work or create content on the iPad… Enter Weebly for iPad, a native application by the popular web-hosting service which allows users to create websites in minutes by dragging and dropping various elements in its web interface.

Although it’s been available on iOS since May 2012, Weebly was iPhone-only until todays update which has brought out native iPad interface with full editing capabilities, unlike the iPhone and iPod touch version.

Why recommend the iPad for schools? - IPAD 4 SCHOOLS

Why recommend the iPad for schools? - IPAD 4 SCHOOLS | New technology | Scoop.it

"This blog is nearly 2 years oldand I thought it was time to revisit the reason for its existence. I am still teaching 11 to 18 year-olds everyday in BYOD classrooms (not iPad only) and can claim a significant experience in the various pros and cons of all types and brands of devices. When I’m considering which students are supported the most in their learning by their device, I still conclude the iPad and its eco-system is my recommendation for handling the full breadth of activities and opportunities undertaken in 21st century schools."

How to use Notes on iPhone and iPad: The ultimate guide

How to use Notes on iPhone and iPad: The ultimate guide | New technology | Scoop.it
The Notes app is the built-in way to take notes, draft memos, jot down thoughts, and otherwise record text on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. As apps go, Notes is bare-bones. You can enter and edit text, look for replacement words, and get definitions, sync between iOS, Mac, and iCloud.com, and even control Notes via Apple's virtual personal assistant, Siri, but that's about it....

Last fall I review HSTRY when it was still in beta. Recently, it lost the beta album and opened to everyone that wants to use it to create multimedia timelines. One of the features of HSTRY that I love is the option to insert quiz questions throughout your timelines. HSTRY supports the inclusion of video, audio, and pictures throughout your timelines.

8 Digital Storytelling Apps for the iPad - Burlington High School Help Desk

8 Digital Storytelling Apps for the iPad - Burlington High School Help Desk | New technology | Scoop.it
Digital storytelling is a powerful tool to use in all grade levels and content areas in a 1:1 classroom. As the term indicates, digital storytelling is essentially telling a story through the use of digital tools. While video and audio are obvious examples, interactive timelines, ebooks, and maps may also fall under the umbrella of digital storytelling. The added bonus of digital storytelling is that it’s fun! While it’s not highlighted on the list below, the video at the bottom of this post was created by app smashing Tellagami and iMovie. Stay tuned for future posts from the Help Desk on how you can combine two or more apps to create a unique digital product and offer students the ultimate 21st century learning experience! We will also be providing walk throughs of each of the apps we’ve introduced so you can learn each of them at your own pace.

How to Record Slow Motion Video with the iPhone Camera - OSXDaily

How to Record Slow Motion Video with the iPhone Camera - OSXDaily | New technology | Scoop.it

"The newest iPhone models support the recording of slow motion video with the native Camera app. This nifty feature was first introduced as a major part of the iPhone 5s camera and is able to shoot 720p movies at 120 frames per second. But that doesn’t mean that slow-motion is limited only to the latest and greatest iPhones, in fact, you can use third party apps to record slow motion video on older iPhone models too. In either case, the result are really fancy slow motion videos, which can be a great way to emphasize particular scenes, events, or just to see the action better of whatever you’re recording."
