6 of The Best TED Ed Riddles to Use with Students in Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

6 of The Best TED Ed Riddles to Use with Students in Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it
TED Ed is one of our favourite video resources we have been recommending for teachers over the last few years. It features short video explanations (usually less than 5 minutes long) covering different educational topics. The clips are professionally animated using a wide range of visual illustrations to hook in the viewers and keep them engaged. We have already shared some very good TED Ed videos on Math, writing, and several other subject areas. In today’s post we want to highlight some challenging TED Ed riddles to share with your students. These are short brain teasers to engage your students in problem solving activities in which they have to make use of different learning skills to solve the riddles. Here is the list:

Becoming Innovative: 15 New Ideas Every Teacher Should Try - TeachThought

Becoming Innovative: 15 New Ideas Every Teacher Should Try - TeachThought | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it
What are the latest emerging trends in education?

As trends to do, these are changing almost yearly. Consider how quiet iPads in the classroom have been recently, whereas three years ago they were going to replace teachers and were (unsarcastically) compared to magic. While mobile devices like the iPad can indeed parallel a kind of magic in the learning process, it obviously has to ‘fit’ into a progressive supporting ecology of assessment, curriculum, and instruction.

With that in mind, we’ve created a list of 15 (the graphic plus 3 bonus items below) new ideas every teacher should try. Not all will fit or work–again, it depends on the ecology of the classroom, school, and so on. But each of these ideas below–some learning models, some concepts, and some technologies–can be transformational for students, and your teaching.

This is a fantastic summary of ways to transform learning - in fact the PBL and Skype examples in combination with the current hot topic in the news about the value and virtues of allrefugees (Karl Stefanovic on WIN Today show)  makes me think I could devise an English  Unit on refugees where students interact through  these digital pedagogical tools  with actual refugees now in Australia to find out their stories and to hear about racial prejudice towards 'boat people', and then write a letter to the editor type assessment dispelling the negativities towards refugees via an online newspaper or blog situation. These could be shared with actual refugees to show them they have the support of Australian citizens....

Connie Baques 's insight:

"Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps, recently won the TED Prize, and stated that his wish was for everyone in the world to record a meaningful interview with a loved one, acquaintance, or even a stranger. StoryCorps released a free app that helps in that process. It makes it super easy to create a great interview by selecting from a list of thought-provoking questions.

The app automatically records, stores, and uploads the interview.

If you're a parent or teacher, I think this is such a great tool to create a project around in order to expand the horizons of your children.

I'd recommend adding the extra element of using the app to interview a stranger. Engaging a stranger in a meaningful conversation can be very intimidating, and the growth that comes from the exercise can be substantial.

I think Dave's mission is a noble one, and I want to encourage everyone to download the StoryCorps app. If nothing else, it can give you ideas for prompts to make your everyday conversations more meaningful.

Digital tools and the theory about using them in teaching and learning are linked to the practical implications (praxis and pedagogy) of what that means and does not mean. At the heart of it all, is the slide that says we cannot describe the future. We have never been able to, so why is that surprising us?

16 skills students need to learn today to thrive tomorrow

16 skills students need to learn today to thrive tomorrow | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it
The gap between the skills people learn and the skills people need is becoming more obvious, as traditional learning falls short of equipping students with the knowledge they need to thrive, according to the World Economic Forum report New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning Through Technology.

Today's job candidates must be able to collaborate, communicate and solve problems – skills developed mainly through social and emotional learning (SEL). Combined with traditional skills, this social and emotional proficiency will equip students to succeed in the evolving digital economy.
