Fighting ISIS with comic books (Wired UK)

Fighting ISIS with comic books (Wired UK) | New storytelling formats | Scoop.it
Comic books are the best technology we have to counter extremist narratives, said social activist, Suleiman Bakhit at WIRED2014
Anca Toader's insight:

A twist on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's famous speech about "the danger of a single story". Suleiman Bakhit explains the toxic effect of the 'single story' in the Middle East where it creates "terrorism disguised as heroism". His solution to this problem? Comic books. Fascinating!

Kathryn Nave:  'Jordanian social activist, Suleiman Bakhit believes we can fight ISIS with comic books. "Everything begins with a story," he told the audience at WIRED2014. "Narratives and myths give us a sense of purpose, they give us a compelling sense of direction in our lives."'

Photographing a ‘Difficult Love’ in South Africa

Photographing a ‘Difficult Love’ in South Africa | New storytelling formats | Scoop.it
Zanele Muholi has been an activist using photography to champion the rights of black lesbians and transgender people in South Africa.
Anca Toader's insight:

Arresting photography project by Zanele Muholi - "an artist and activist, advocating for rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on a continent where they are under attack".

She is documenting black lesbians and transgender people and says that when she first started doing this "you could barely find any positive images of black lesbians,” in South Africa. She was equally "aware of the disconnect between images and reality, how men took pictures that did not capture what she knew and felt".

Same sex marriage is legal in South Africa, however homophobia is "rampant, and a horrific wave of violence against black lesbians and transgender men continues".

This beautiful photography project has a very ambitious goal: "You can’t change the laws without changing the images,” says Zanele Muholi. “It is one thing to say we exist; it is another thing to show it."
