BOULDER, Colo. (CU-Boulder PR) – A small satellite designed and built by a team of University of Colorado Boulder students to better understand how atmospheric drag can affect satellite orbits was successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California Sunday morning.

 

The satellite, known as the Drag and Atmospheric Neutral Density Explorer satellite, or DANDE, will investigate how a layer of Earth’s atmosphere known as the thermosphere varies in density at altitudes from about 200 to 300 miles above Earth. The commercial Falcon-9 SpaceX rocket lifted off the launch pad at about 10 a.m. MDT carrying DANDE, a small beach ball-sized satellite developed over a period of about six years by roughly 150 students, primarily undergraduates, as part of the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, or COSGS.

SpaceX's next resupply mission to the International Space Station is set for takeoff as soon as Saturday after a rapid rebound from the company's last flight from Cape Canaveral, but the company has abandoned a plan to use the launch as another chance to practice rocket recovery procedures.


Liftoff of a 208-foot-tall Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled for Saturday at 2:16 a.m. EDT (0616 GMT), a day later than previously planned to accommodate flight preparations after SpaceX's Sept. 7 launch of the AsiaSat 6 commercial communications satellite.


If ground crews pull it off, it will bust SpaceX's record turnaround time between Falcon 9 missions as the launch company ramps up its mission cadence to accomplish a jam-packed manifest.

An executive working on Google GOOGL -0.56%’s efforts to deliver Internet service via satellite has jumped to a similar role at Facebook FB -3.74%, underscoring the social network’s efforts in the area and the competition between the two Internet giants.


Michael Tseytlin joined Facebook earlier this month to work on satellite technology for the company’s Connectivity Lab, according to people familiar with the matter. An expert in satellite design, Tseytlin had been working on Google’s satellite efforts being led by Greg Wyler, a high profile satellite entrepreneur who also recently departed Google.


Prior to Google, Tseytlin spent seven years at LightSquared, leading development of satellite and other infrastructure for the now bankrupt startup that hoped to deliver cellular service via satellite.

Sept. 15, 2014 – A new astronaut-led, private space flight training group has launched a contest to redefine the "right stuff" by giving away trips to space in return for the impact those who go can make to the world.

Spaceship Earth Grants (SEG), presented by Star Harbor Space Training Academy, will award one ticket onboard a privately-operated suborbital spacecraft for every 50,000 applications it receives starting Monday (Sept. 15) through the end of the year. As the number of applicants increase, SEG will raise the rate at which space flights are awarded (to as high as one in 25,000).

The fourth SpaceX cargo mission to the International Space Station (ISS) under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract is scheduled to launch Saturday, Sept. 20, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The one-day adjustment in the launch date was made to accommodate preparations of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and was coordinated with the station’s partners and managers.


The company's Falcon 9 rocket, carrying its Dragon cargo spacecraft loaded with more than 5,000 pounds of scientific experiments and supplies, will lift off at 2:16 a.m. EDT. NASA Television coverage of the launch begins at 1:15 a.m. If for any reason the launch is postponed, the next launch opportunity is Sunday, Sept. 21 at approximately 1:53 a.m.

WASHINGTON — A bill that would grant property rights and other protections for commercial asteroid mining ventures received a mixed reception at a hearing of the House Science space subcommittee Sept. 10.


H.R. 5063, the American Space Technology for Exploring Resource Opportunities In Deep Space (ASTEROIDS) Act, would grant U.S. companies the rights to resources they extract from asteroids. The bill would also allow companies to take legal action if they suffered “harmful interference” during those activities by other entities under U.S. jurisdiction.

WASHINGTON — Virgin Galactic now plans to perform the first commercial flights of its SpaceShipTwo suborbital vehicle early next year, the latest schedule slip for the long-delayed program, the company’s founder said in a pair of televised interviews.


“From now until March there will be many test flights,” said Sir Richard Branson in an interview on CBS’s “The Late Show” Sept. 9. He said he planned to be on the first commercial flight, from Spaceport America in New Mexico, in “February or March of next year.”

    1. To understand the root cause of the behavior of the deployers
    2. To put corrective actions into place
    3. To plan a resumption in CubeSat deployments

We believe we are making progress in understanding the root cause of the anomalies. The team of NanoRacks and the CubeSat deployer manufacturer Quad M are now able to duplicate on the ground the anomalies observed in space.

Space Systems/Loral will manufacture the television broadcasting spacecraft in Palo Alto, Calif., and a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch the satellite in 2016.

When can failure lead to success? When unanticipated failures are actually expected to happen in a project and are used as opportunities for learning how to do something right. That’s what preliminary experimental test flights are for: trying out different new technologies, seeing various ways these new technologies can fail in actual flight, and devising ways to make such promising technologies work where they have previously failed. Under this methodology, only after a technology appears to be reliable and profitable will a launch vehicle manufacturer offer it to its paying customers.

NASA has selected four companies to integrate and fly technology payloads on commercial suborbital reusable platforms that carry payloads near the boundary of space. The selection is part of NASA's continuing effort to foster a viable market for American commercial reusable suborbital platforms that allow testing of new space technologies within Earth's atmosphere.


Through these new awards, selected companies will receive an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract for integration and flight services, drawing from a pool of commercial space companies. The three-year contracts have two-year extension options and a minimum value of $100,000. The flights will carry a variety of payloads during five diverse flight profiles to help meet the agency's research and technology needs.

Putting on a late summer sky show along Florida's Space Coast, a Falcon 9 rocket climbed into space after midnight Sunday with a commercial communications satellite to connect growing markets in China and Southeast Asia.

Powered by 1.3 million pounds of thrust, the 224-foot-tall rocket lifted off at 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT). These images were taken at a viewing site about 3 miles south of the launch pad.

The chief aerodynamicist credited with designing SpaceShipTwo is departing the program on the eve of a crucial series of flight tests designed that Virgin Galactic hopes will lead to the start of commercial suborbital space tourism operations early next year.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Jim Tighe announced on Thursday that he would be leaving his position as chief aerodynamicist at Scaled Composites in two weeks for a job at an unnamed aerospace company. It is not clear what prompted the move.

SpaceX CRS-4 Launch Slips One Day While ISS Joint Commission Worries About Delays

NASA announced today that the launch of SpaceX's next cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has been delayed one day to September 20, 2014.  A one-day delay is minor, but at a recent meeting of the U.S.-Russian joint commission that oversees ISS safety and readiness issues, concern was expressed about delays in U.S. resupply missions.


NASA said the "adjustment" in the SpaceX CRS-4 launch date was made to accommodate preparations of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and "was coordinated with the station's partners and managers."  This is the fourth operational SpaceX cargo flight to the ISS (SpaceX CRS-4).  Launch is currently scheduled for 2:16 am ET on September 20 from Cape Canaveral, FL, and NASA has several pre- and post-launch briefings planned.  If the launch does, in fact, take place on September 20, berthing to the ISS will be on September 22.

PARIS — Boeing has landed the first contract for its 502 Phoenix small-satellite platform in a partially vendor-financed deal with a hyperspectral imaging startup called HySpecIQ, the satellite maker announced Sept. 10 at the World Satellite Business Week conference here.


The deal calls for Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems of El Segundo, California, to deliver two Phoenix platforms equipped with high-resolution hyperspectral imaging sensors that would be ready for launch within several months of one another starting in the first quarter of 2018, said Erik Daehler, Boeing’s deputy director of remote sensing 502 products.

The unmanned spacecraft will dock with the International Space Station (ISS) two days later, carrying operational cargo for the fourth of a minimum of twelve SpaceX operational missions contracted to NASA. PARIS—A Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket, in its second commercial flight in a month, on Sept. 7 successfully placed the AsiaSat-6/Thaicom-7 telecommunications satellite into geostationary orbit.


Satellite fleet operators AsiaSat of Hong Kong and Thaicom of Thailand, which have agreed to divide the use of the satellite, confirmed that the spacecraft was healthy in orbit and sending signals after separation from the Falcon 9 upper stage.
