Mark Treadwell's insight:

A great talk from Keri dealing with why we should be optimistic that learning in schools can and will change to accommodate the new capabilities that learners now require to function in society. The 21stC Canyon (the Chasm). Moving from autonomous learners to become the interdependent learners that we now require. A well presented argument for the last human century.

Jason Silva @ work - a somewhat overwhelming montage of ideas, concepts and innovations that synthesize and coalesce numerous exponential technologies into new systems and environments that we are already beginning to experience but what is the net sum game? Who works and why; what is real and does that even matter? An infusion of philosophy into this bloodstream of notions may well save the patient but will they know what just happened?

Why Do Americans Stink at Math?

Why Do Americans Stink at Math? | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
The Common Core should finally improve math education. The problem is that no one has taught the teachers how to teach it.
Mark Treadwell's insight:

Could not agree more. We have to re-teach our educators to understand the underlying concepts that would allow them and subsequently their students to understand mathematics. Once you understand the concept two critical capabilities are enabled

1. You can reason an answer by logical deduction for a problem that you hade not been taught the rote process to get the right answer

2. You can predict and/or approximate answers to problems without solving the problem to an exact figure.

Truth is you need both the ability to understand and know the process to get the correct answer; the order here is critical. MT

Mark Treadwell's insight:

This has to be one of the best technology inventions ever for educators. (about $250). The Swivl takes most devices and you attached an tracking microphone to your lapel and your device videos whoever is wearing the microphone.

 3 great applications

1. videoing your self teaching - just 10 minute sessions with you focussing on a particular skill - reflect-review-improve

2. Video your brief (10 joins max) teaching sessions and put then up on your YouTube channel for learners to go back to later

3. Attach the microphone to learners who struggle to manage themselves and then let them watch themselves. many of these children have little concept of self and seeing themselves is a revelation. MT

Mindfulness Technique: The Art of Conversation | Mindful

Mindfulness Technique: The Art of Conversation | Mindful | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

Mindfulness technique: Five steps to enjoying more empathetic and artful conversation.

Conversation in the original Latin had a very broad meaning. It meant something like “living together, having dealings with others,” and it referred to more than just talking. We can learn a lot from connecting to this original bigger sense of the word.

When we're having a real conversation we're actively exchanging—giving and receiving—which begins with truly being together.

We can’t exchange something with someone when they, or we, are not present. We can talk to them, we can talk at them, but we can’t have a conversation.

A Difference: Are Laptops Really Bad For Learning? | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Mark Treadwell's insight:

Sadly, this is a somewhat poor experiment as there are numerous uncontrolled variables within the experiment. Therefore establishing a direct correlation between taking notes in either format and the ability of the learner to recall these is problematic at best let alone defining, measuring and assessing the possible learning outcomes from each approach. .

10 Things That Learners Pay Attention To (And How to Use Them in eLearning)

10 Things That Learners Pay Attention To (And How to Use Them in eLearning) | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

"Even more than other types of education, eLearning must struggle to attract learners' attention: the Internet is full of distractions, and adult learners are both busier and more free to indulge in distractions. Helping students to pay attention is a primary concern of training professionals, so here are some optimal methods to win the attention game in eLearning."

Empathy: Is it Teachable?

Empathy: Is it Teachable? | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

Empathy is, therefore, a learned behavior that can be taught. As humans, we are, after all, social animals.

We learn by observing. Parents, older siblings, peers, and teachers can teach the children from an early age the basic character traits of kindness, goodness, generosity, compassion, consideration, helpfulness and by setting an example through demonstrating how to feel empathy.

Mark Treadwell's insight:

An excellent introduction into this critical social capacity. Developing this capacity explicitly is a huge value add for young people but it also requires a suite of cognitive skills and development levels. Building awareness, even if the learner is unable to fully comprehend the entire concept framework is worth the time investment. MT www.MarkTreadwell.com

Gust MEES's curator insight, July 13, 2:32 AM

To be sure, some collaboration fatigue just comes with the territory. The reason you pursue collaborative ventures in the first place is because you need to address an ambiguous, highly visible, boundary-crossing issue for which responsibility and control is spread evenly across many people. Decades of research show that these high demand/low control situations are a veritable petri dish for job stress and burnout.
