To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society | Collaboration | Collaborative Learning Communities | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Creating “Collaborative Learning Communities”

“It is essential to view learning as a total community responsibility,” he says, and to expect no short cuts. Children need to be integrated, fully contributing members of the broader community, so they can feel useful and valued. (It is not just the children who need this, he adds; healthy communities also need children.)

On a practical level, the most powerful lever for change, Abbott says, is people coming together to “rethink the role of community in the learning process,” agreeing how to divide up responsibilities among professional teachers and other community members, and then launching small pilot projects that are true to their new vision. These efforts will build on each other, he says, and large-scale change will follow.

Jodi Clark's curator insight, November 30, 2014 8:10 PM

Could these education insights also relate to how we learn as professionals?  What if our trainings assumed we were going to be co-creators of our learning experiences?

A Difference: Are Laptops Really Bad For Learning? | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Mark Treadwell's insight:

Sadly, this is a somewhat poor experiment as there are numerous uncontrolled variables within the experiment. Therefore establishing a direct correlation between taking notes in either format and the ability of the learner to recall these is problematic at best let alone defining, measuring and assessing the possible learning outcomes from each approach. .

10 Things That Learners Pay Attention To (And How to Use Them in eLearning)

10 Things That Learners Pay Attention To (And How to Use Them in eLearning) | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

"Even more than other types of education, eLearning must struggle to attract learners' attention: the Internet is full of distractions, and adult learners are both busier and more free to indulge in distractions. Helping students to pay attention is a primary concern of training professionals, so here are some optimal methods to win the attention game in eLearning."

Why Do Americans Stink at Math?

Why Do Americans Stink at Math? | New Paradigm Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
The Common Core should finally improve math education. The problem is that no one has taught the teachers how to teach it.
Mark Treadwell's insight:

Could not agree more. We have to re-teach our educators to understand the underlying concepts that would allow them and subsequently their students to understand mathematics. Once you understand the concept two critical capabilities are enabled

1. You can reason an answer by logical deduction for a problem that you hade not been taught the rote process to get the right answer

2. You can predict and/or approximate answers to problems without solving the problem to an exact figure.

Truth is you need both the ability to understand and know the process to get the correct answer; the order here is critical. MT

Mark Treadwell's insight:

This has to be one of the best technology inventions ever for educators. (about $250). The Swivl takes most devices and you attached an tracking microphone to your lapel and your device videos whoever is wearing the microphone.

 3 great applications

1. videoing your self teaching - just 10 minute sessions with you focussing on a particular skill - reflect-review-improve

2. Video your brief (10 joins max) teaching sessions and put then up on your YouTube channel for learners to go back to later

3. Attach the microphone to learners who struggle to manage themselves and then let them watch themselves. many of these children have little concept of self and seeing themselves is a revelation. MT
