Jen is the wife of Ivan Owen, who co-created the first 3D printed hand for a child in South Africa and released the files open source so that anyone, anywhere in the world could take those files and print a hand for themselves or someone in need.

She has been a volunteer and participant in the field of open-source, 3D printed prosthetic hands for the past 4 years. Along the way, she has sought to highlight and document stories from the e-NABLE Community of volunteers on the topic of low-cost prosthetics from around the world, as well as to create an information resource for people interested in learning more about the history, design & fabrication of these devices.

The online shoe retailer Zappos has always stood out for its unconventional human-resources philosophy. For nearly a decade the company has been making something it calls “The Offer” to new hires—an opportunity to take a $2,000 stipend instead of starting the job. The company prides itself on the attentiveness of its customer service and the devotion of its workers, and “The Offer” is an attempt to weed out those who aren’t thrilled about the work ahead.

But now, one of the company’s unusual approaches has led to what’s being called a Zappos exodus, as 18 percent of the company's staff have taken buyouts in the last 10 months. That takes Zappos’ turnover rate for 2015 to 30 percent, which is 10 percentage points above their typical annual attrition rate.

When tech giants such as Google and Uber hide their wealth from taxation, they make it harder for us to use technology to improve services. 


To understand why we see so few genuine alternatives to US technology giants, it’s instructive to compare the fate of a company like Uber – valued at more than $62.5bn (£44bn) – and that of Kutsuplus, an innovative Finnish startup forced to shut down late last year.

Kutsuplus’s aspiration was to be the Uber of public transport: it operated a network of minibuses that would pick up and drop passengers anywhere in Helsinki, with smartphones, algorithms and the cloud deployed to maximise efficiency, cut costs and provide a slick public service. Being a spinoff of a local university that operated on a shoestring budget, Kutsuplus did not have rich venture capitalists behind it. This, perhaps, is what contributed to its demise: the local transport authority found it too expensive, despite impressive year-on-year growth of 60%.

De Zwitserse stad Lausanne gaat experimenteren met het basisinkomen. De gemeenteraadsleden hebben een motie goedgekeurd waarin een basisinkomen wordt voorgesteld voor een deel van de stadsinwoners. In juni zal het project van start gaan.
"HET BASISINKOMEN STELT MENSEN VEILIG IN DE HUIDIGE KWETSBARE TIJDEN. DE VRIJHEID DIE VOORTVLOEIT UIT HET BASISINKOMEN ZAL MENSEN STIMULEREN OM MEER DINGEN TE DOEN DIE ZULLEN LEIDEN TOT INNOVATIE EN SOCIALE INCLUSIE BINNEN ONZE MAATSCHAPPIJ"
De gemeenteraad van Lausanne heeft een niet-bindende motie ingediend voor de invoering van het basisinkomen. Concreet zal het proefproject lijken op een gelijkaardig experiment in Utrecht; daar worden inwoners ingedeeld in verschillende groepen naargelang hun sociale status. Op basis daarvan krijgen de deelnemende inwoners verschillende inkomens aangereikt.

Macon, Ga. is a city poised to transform. Sitting right in the middle of the state, Macon has been a transportation hub since before the Civil War. The town now boasts dozens of homes and neighborhoods on the National Register of Historic Places — the phrase “good bones” comes up frequently in writing about the city’s physical assets — but though it once was a prosperous center of the textile industry, it has suffered from urban decay for several decades.

Je werkt je baas liever tegen, dan in de hand.  Samenwerking Samenwerking is vaak onderzocht. Tussen mensen, maar vooral bij dieren. Over menselijke samenwerking willen de onderzoekers dan ook meer te weten komen.
