Het activisme van de 21ste eeuw.

Het activisme van de 21ste eeuw. | new society | Scoop.it
Daarom weet ik het nu wel zeker: the next big thing will be a lot of small things.

The next big thing will be a lot of small things.

Forget About Setting Goals. Focus on This Instead. – Personal Growth

Forget About Setting Goals. Focus on This Instead. – Personal Growth | new society | Scoop.it

etcWe all have things that we want to achieve in our lives — getting into better shape, building a successful business etc. 1. Goals reduce your current happiness. When you’re working toward a goal, you are essentially saying, “I’m not good enough yet, but I will be when I reach my goal.” The problem with this mindset is that you’re teaching yourself to always put happiness and success off until the next milestone is achieved. “Once I reach my goal, then I’ll be happy. Once I achieve my goal, then I’ll be successful.” SOLUTION: Commit to a process, not a goal. Choosing a goal puts a huge burden on your shoulders. Can you imagine if I had made it my goal to write two books this year? Just writing that sentence stresses me out. But we do this to ourselves all the time. We place unnecessary stress on ourselves

Managing Without Managers

Managing Without Managers | new society | Scoop.it
In Brazil, where paternalism and the family business fiefdom still flourish, I am president of a manufacturing company that treats its 800 employees like responsible adults. Most of them—including factory workers—set their own working hours. All have access to the company books. The vast majority vote on many important corporate decisions. Everyone gets paid by the month, regardless of job description, and more than 150 of our management people set their own salaries and bonuses.

This may sound like an unconventional way to run a business, but it seems to work. Close to financial disaster in 1980, Semco is now one of Brazil’s fastest-growing companies, with a profit margin in 1988 of 10% on sales of $37 million. Our five factories produce a range of sophisticated products, including marine pumps, digital scanners, commercial dishwashers, truck filters, and mixing equipment for everything from bubble gum to rocket fuel. Our customers include Alcoa, Saab, and General Motors.

Will greater access to digital health improve healthcare in emerging countries?

Will greater access to digital health improve healthcare in emerging countries? | new society | Scoop.it
The expanding role of healthcare providers is not limited to societies with “developed” healthcare systems. Diseases, such as AIDS and malaria, prevalent in the third world and emerging countries are now considered chronic or curable with the proper treatment, leaving those afflicted with greater chance of recovery. However, as the cost the typical person pays for healthcare over his or her lifetime rises, the question becomes: How will these emerging societies, especially those in less-developed countries, sustain a rising bill?

The answer is they cannot. Hopefully, they will not have to. Already, healthcare technology providers around the globe are finding new ways to reduce the overall cost of medicine by improving efficiencies wherever possible. They are accomplishing this in a few key ways

A World With No Bosses: Turns Out, Not That Great

A World With No Bosses: Turns Out, Not That Great | new society | Scoop.it

The online shoe retailer Zappos has always stood out for its unconventional human-resources philosophy. For nearly a decade the company has been making something it calls “The Offer” to new hires—an opportunity to take a $2,000 stipend instead of starting the job. The company prides itself on the attentiveness of its customer service and the devotion of its workers, and “The Offer” is an attempt to weed out those who aren’t thrilled about the work ahead.

But now, one of the company’s unusual approaches has led to what’s being called a Zappos exodus, as 18 percent of the company's staff have taken buyouts in the last 10 months. That takes Zappos’ turnover rate for 2015 to 30 percent, which is 10 percentage points above their typical annual attrition rate.
