Cloud data breaches can strike fear into the hearts of even veteran IT professionals and seasoned senior executives. Recent high-profile examples — Target, Adobe and now eBay — only compound the problem: If industry giants are at risk, how can any company stay safe?

Consider eBay's issue: Earlier this year, the online auction house was hacked but the company didn't discover the problem until the beginning of May. What's more, investigators didn't believe any customer data had been compromised and so were slow to issue warnings and prompt password changes. The result? A familiar PR firestorm, making businesses that were already concerned about moving their data to the cloud even more wary. But the story doesn't have to end this way — it's possible to overcome the fear of a cloud data breach. Here's how.
