David Geffen: 'I'd Kill Myself' Rather Than Get Into Music Business Today | Billboard.biz

David Geffen: 'I'd Kill Myself' Rather Than Get Into Music Business Today | Billboard.biz | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

Asked his thoughts about the opportunities and challenges of entering the music business as a producer or executive today, he deadpanned: "I'd kill myself." And it's no easier to break in as an artist now, he notes, attributing the difficulties to the absence of Top 40 radio and an outlet like MTV to air music videos on a loop. "You need repetition," he said of what he describes as a crucial element of discovery. "You need to be able to hear things a lot."

I think the new deal is great!! Its good for the musicians because they aren't robbed of their work. Since this deal monitors the music people are uploading now theirs a lesser chance that people will try to put up artist music that they don't own. Even though ads and stuff is the downfall I feel, since everyone goes to the internet sometimes to get away from that. I think the users can get over that though, we got over it when youtube started using ads. It also good for the users also though because we're gained access to streaming more music now since this deal. Overall I think it was a fair deal. We still get to stream the music we love, and we also get a bigger selection now

Austin Alderfer's curator insight, January 12, 5:15 PM

This article brings up different points in bullet style articles. I could comment on all but that would take several paragraphs and almost entirely new article. Instead I will make a generalized idea of what all this meant for me.

In 2016 it is more important then every for all of these music streaming services (Apple Music, Spotify, Youtube, etc) to make sure they stay with the times. What I mean is they need to continue to grow. They can not stay where they are at now and believe they will continue to stay on top. If they do not meet demands of the people, they will no longer be the sites they are today.

Otniel Fernandez's curator insight, January 17, 9:44 PM

2016 is going to have a lot of changes on the way music is being heard of. This article gave me the insight on the way music is being changed in the year 2016 through the technology we have today. spotify, 360 video playback, live broadcasting.

The Labels Still Don't Get YouTube And It's Costing Them

The Labels Still Don't Get YouTube And It's Costing Them | New Music Industry | Scoop.it
This is the fifth post in my YouTube economy series. You can read the other posts here, here, here and here 2015 was the year that streaming came of age across global markets (it had already got there in the Nordics and South Korea of course). In the UK and the US stream volumes grew by 85% and 93%…

Eric Fleshman's curator insight, January 17, 9:21 PM

I must say that this article is very insightful for a number of reasons. Record labels are finding that they're losing money to the new generation of streaming kids but do not try to find ways to capitalize. For instance youtube has become one of most major platforms for streaming music and videos. Many artist have became successful on youtube from building their fan bases. This article states that, "Record labels and artists can seize some control of their destiny, by taking a more sophisticated view of YouTube and exploring how to build strategies that work for YouTube in 2016..." Maybe new and upcoming artist can get on youtube, which more made money last year than any other streaming services, and use it for its advantages. They can build their fan bases by building a relationship with the younger generation by using the medium that they use the most often. I'll say, if you can't beat them, join them!
