Business Record: Monetizing free online courses

Top Free Classes's insight:

MOOCs are the great opportunity for companies to advertise themselves:

"First of all, MOOCs are terrific magnets to attract attention and students to an organization or institution. Imagine someone taking a short, free, objective, informative course on health insurance and then going to the website of the sponsoring company where she can explore insurance options. That’s “wicking” from one experience (the free course) to another (buying a health insurance policy).

For universities, the principal hosts of MOOCs, the same principle applies. Visibility and buzz for the institution and also for the department or program that is sponsoring the course."

Global Health MOOC: An Interdisciplinary Overview

Global Health MOOC: An Interdisciplinary Overview | Free Online Courses | Scoop.it
Top Free Classes's insight:

About University of Geneva Global Health MOOC that starts on Oct. 7th. on coursera.

Our globalised world has posed new challenges for global health. Infectious diseases have the potential to travel quickly and spread widely across countries (e.g. due to increased international travel). The determinants of health (such as the food system) are across country borders, leading to a growing burden in non-communicable diseases in both developed and developing countries.

In our interdependent world, more and more health issues cannot be addressed by a country nor by a sector alone and require collaboration, coordination and integration. This is what Global Health is about.

As the online education movement grows, Hollywood-style concerns — wardrobe, social media buzz — are coming to academia - The Boston Globe

As the online education movement grows, Hollywood-style concerns — wardrobe, social media buzz — are coming to academia - The Boston Globe | Free Online Courses | Scoop.it
Before Adam Van Arsdale began taping his anthropology course to show online, he was used to standing in front of perhaps 20 Wellesley College undergrads.
Top Free Classes's insight:

What Professors are going through while filming MOOCs:)

David Cox - "Fundamentals of Neuroscience" MOOC from Harvard @edx

Creating 5- to 10-minute NOVA-like episodes, the scientist has started thinking more like a movie director, imagining how to present things in a way that will translate on screen.

“I’m learning that if I show a brain, I have to tilt it at an angle that seems unnatural but looks natural on camera,” he said.

Smitha Radhakrishnan - "Introduction to Global Sociology"  MOOC from Wellesley @edx

When she received an e-mail suggesting that June would be a good time to film a promo for her forthcoming MOOC , her first thought was not about sociology, but her large baby bump. “Being on the Internet indefinitely as a pregnant person is very different than teaching in front of 25 students in a class you’ve known for the whole semester and have a relationship with,” Radhakrishnan said. “They understand if you have to sit down because you’re tired.”

Louis Hyman -- "American Capitalism: A History" MOOC from Cornell @edx (scheduled to launch in 2014) The “weirdest” part of the experience for him is delivering  talks barefoot because the studio lights make the room so hot. “I never thought I’d be lecturing on the railroad strike of 1877 without shoes on,” he said.

Guy Rogers - "Was Alexander the Great?" MOOC from Wellesley College @edx

Decades into his career, seeing himself on camera has made Rogers rethink his approach in the classroom and even his preferred all-black wardrobe. “I am not Brad Pitt,” he said and  “I’ve realized it’s important to be as kind to everyone as possible,  and "I’ve started wearing more dress shirts and khakis.”
