The Social Media Wars [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Social Media Wars [INFOGRAPHIC] | new models | Scoop.it

Social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, but, with so many networks out there fighting for our attention which networks are we really using? Overall, 72% of adults over the age of 18 used a social network in 2012. Currently Facebook is still the most popular site with 62% of adult global Internet users actively logging in, with nearly half of these users active on Twitter too...

Big changes from 2005 to 2012.  Betting on bigger shifts in future years...

Harkrisyati Kamil's curator insight, January 20, 10:29 PM

Make sure that you understand the target audience and i dentify the social media they prefer. In Indonesia, the total internet user reach 23,% out of the total population and mostly are young people, 15-19 years old.Recently, we have seen the growth of Twitter users . This is an opportunity for librarians to  a good opportunity for librarian to reach more audience

Siri Anderson's curator insight, January 26, 2:20 PM

I find it interesting to note parallels and contrasts between use of social networks in f2f environments and online environments.  In some instances the online version works better for those who flounder in person. In some cases people who love the real world interactions disparage the online ones. But for most of us, there seems to be a parallel in our patterns and style it would seem. Where should children "learn" how to do this, or is that lesson beside the point at this time?

Surprising Social Media Statistics from 2013 (Infographic) | new models | Scoop.it

Over the last several years, the popularity of social media has reached incredible heights—and 2013 was the best year thus far., and many of the mind boggling social media statistics from the past year prove this.

In 2013, 95 percent of Facebook users logged into their accounts daily. One of Facebook’s main competitors, Twitter, reached 231.7 million active users. Google+ wants to get on their levels, and it does add 25,000 new users every day.

Map Painter Fernando Vicente Explores The Art In Cartography

Map Painter Fernando Vicente Explores The Art In Cartography | new models | Scoop.it

While completely useless to a lost global traveler, Fernando Vicente’s map paintings offer a spectacular visual relief. A Madrid-based painter and illustrator, Vicente uses delicate vintage maps as canvases in his “Atlas Series.”  The artist illustrates human faces, animals, and skulls on the maps, allowing the geographic boundaries of each to shape the contours and shapes of his subjects. In dark, lush gestures, he seamlessly orients an ancient profile on the outline of Spain and imagines a rearing elephant’s trunk on the tip of South America.

Remember this classic marketing formula. AIDA. It works for all types of marketing--including book promotion.

A =  ATTENTION

I  =  INTEREST

D =  DESIRE

A =  ACTION

Are you wondering why the action is at the end? As an author you need to ENGAGE with people. This has been true forever, and people will not care what you have to say, or what you have to sell, until you GET TO KNOW THEM. Read the full article fo details on how you can engage with your audience.

Content Strategy of disruptors: how Open Garden's leverages content curation to build momentum

What Is A "Curation Collison" & Thanks To 17 Great Curation Teachers On Scoop.it | new models | Scoop.it

Curation Collisions Create SURPRISE & Surprise Matters
We are OLD even when we are young now. There is no way to remain YOUNG for very long with so much information chasing us. The next generation lives on their phones the one after may be searching the web and emailing as they look through their Google Glass.

Scoop.it CEO @Guillaume Decugismade an interesting offhand suggestion about curation to me a few weeks ago. Guillaume noted how important curation becomes when we slouch toward the point when everything that ever NEEDS to be written has been written.

Guillaume means what I call "rich snippet" curation or content curation where the hand of the curator is present and accounted for. This is the kind of curation many great teacher helped me learn over the past few years - a skill that feels increasingly important in a way that reminds me of how I felt about SEO before there was a new sheriff in town named Navneet Panda.

“ One of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is to Begin with the End in Mind.”This infographic does just that – recognizing that you need to establish your goals first when looking to your social media marketing strategy. It doesn’t simply speak about conversions – it speaks to the other business uses of social media: Brand Marketing, Thought Leaderhsip, Service and Sales Prospecting. Much of the strength of social media doesn’t come from the immediate push… it’s the echos and volume that are established over time.

How To Moderate Social Media

How To Moderate Social Media | new models | Scoop.it
When you throw a dinner party, you dream of excellent company, good food, and constant conversation. Social media managers strive for the same thing.

The World Editor’s Forum recently published a guide and study on the area of comment moderation. This guide concludes with six pointers for publishers to “promote respectful dialogue and conversation rather than uncivil rants and insults, and allow intelligent, thoughtful input to shine”. So what exactly are these pointers?

More details at the link.

Great tips here! #SocialMediaTools #DIYSEO #Nine0Media

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, March 29, 5:37 AM

If conversations are the new social currency we've got some tools, guidelines and social mores to create. Online conversations are a tad on the wild west side yet, but trolls and spam can't support themselves for long.

The cost any network built on conversations incurs to rid itself of spam and trolls could kill the golden goose. Community and social "policing" and hoping the good guys math is always just a little faster is the hope conversation based "dinner parties" depend on as roughly described in this "how to moderate" social media post shares.

By moderating we see what we already knew - mobile is different. Mobile requires maps, games and PICTURES.

Taylor Roy's curator insight, April 29, 1:34 PM

We've made such incredible progress with technology over the past 10 years. This chart in the article shows the percentages of the platform that online content is used on. It starts with photos. only 8% of time with photos is spent on a desktop, while the other 92% are using their phone. From here, the mobile percentage decreases while the desktop increases. However we see platforms like maps, games, weather, and social networking being over 50% on mobile. The desktop percentage starts to be over 50% on online content like retail, entertainment news, business/finance, news, health information, and portals. While these are mostly used on a desktop, it doesn't mean that they are not used on mobile devices. Every piece of online content has a percentage of over 25% used on mobile devices.

CompletelyNovel's Sarah Juckes advises how to write a blurb | Self-Publishing Advice | new models | Scoop.it
An easy-to-follow, practical guide to writing the best blurb to sell your self-published book, provided by YA author Sarah Juckes of CompletelyNovel

Penelope's curator insight, February 6, 2:41 PM

This kind of stuff wakes me up in the middle of the night. A book theme-tagline and blurb. Instead of waking up and writing it down--as I should--I repeat it over and over in my head, and zonk out again. Once awake, I write it down--immediately.

YA author Sarah Juckes gives us a few tips for writing an amazing stand-out blurb that will get people pushing that BUY button.

1)  Do your research (check out other blurbs, make notes)

2)  Choose a blurb style (layout)

3)  Start with a synopsis (freewrite a summary of your novel)

4)   Focus on your character & 'Stakes' (intro the protagonist, set up the stakes for character)

5)   Find your voice (same voice/style as your novel)

6)   Refine, refine, refine (condense it)

7)   Map your blurb (map it on the layout)

8)   Are you answering right questions? (put yourself in reader's shoes)

9)   Choose the right font (make it pleasing)

10)  Read, review, rewrite  (go over it again and again, ask someone for their opinion)

Once you check off each of these steps, your book blurb should be a winner, and the book a seller!

Prefabricated modular home delivered into the Brazilian countryside

Prefabricated modular home delivered into the Brazilian countryside | new models | Scoop.it

MAPA of Brazil and Uruguay has built a prefabricated modular home and transported it by lorry to a picturesque spot in the countryside outside Porto Alegre.

MAPA built the mobile residence as the prototype for Minimod, a business creating bespoke modular structures; the residential retreat comprises four modules, creating separate areas for sleeping, lounging, dining and bathing within a simple steel-framed structure.

The base of the building is raised off the ground to protect it from rising damp and the roof is covered with plants that integrate a natural system of rainwater harvesting and filtration. The structure was entirely prefabricated before being delivered to its rural location, but MAPA says the buildings can also be transported in pieces and assembled onsite.

Renault is offering an alternative system to keep an eye on drivers and note where their vehicle is headed, a personal drone.
