9 Creative Storytelling Tools That Will Make You Wish You Were A Student Again | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Should you get Amazon's new e-book subscription service?

Should you get Amazon's new e-book subscription service? | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Here's how Kindle Unlimited compares with other "Netflix for books" services
Ken Morrison's insight:

Things just got interesting as Amazon releases "Kindle Unlimitted" service. You can borrow 10 books at a time from their library of 600,00 for $10 a month.

Other options include Oyster and Scribd at similar monthly prices.

Ken's Key Takeaway:
The contracts with publishers is what will determine your satisfaction.  For example, I wish Amazon had a contract with Penguin Publishing. Those books will not be included in this service.  Each service offers a 30-day trial so choose wisely.

Open education, open source, and the dilemma over e-textbooks

Open education, open source, and the dilemma over e-textbooks | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

This is a very nice overview of the short history of digital textbooks and the dream of open education.  It starts with information about John Holt and continues through Apple, Samung, etc.  It also talks about the problems of bias.

Teacher fired for not helping school steal from students

Teacher fired for not helping school steal from students | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

I value textbooks.  I still have some of mine from my college days.

An art/media teacher from the USA got fired for not 'buying in to' the school's for profit policy partnership to sell/rent online digital books to students.  They are expensive, not needed (in his class) and they 'expire' so the students can not keep them as a resource.  I am happy that the web and his students is coming to his defense.  I hope that he gets another job soon where he feels valued.  Unfortunately, he may have to move or make a long commute to find a new job.  not fair!  How do you feel?
