If you are looking to refresh your stories and just want to play with sharing your stories in different ways -- or are stuck not knowing how to tell one of your stories -- then grab this article.

 

If you use these other structures, you won't get stuck in the monomyth of the hero (a good thing).

 

Monomyth dangers

I have noticed one piece of language changing, however. That is the word "Monomyth". Mono means one or alone. Mono + myth means one myth. Joseph Campbell coined this term to refer to the Hero's story as the one all encompassing archetype for narratives. From there it morphed into also meaning a narrative common to all people. But it has a stranglehold on our storytelling, as if there are no other kinds of stories to tell.

 

Now the word is being used without question. Make sure you listen to the video in this article by Chimamanda Adichie on The Danger Of A Single Story.

 

The monomyth of the hero's journey is eclipsing other kinds of stories to tell. In the mad rush for business storytelling, the hero's journey is often touted as the only story to pay attention to. Stories of community, origin stories, how we do things, cautionary tales, and the like are neglected, but we are starving for them.

The more I read, the more I want to read. Some great books have come out in the last 6 months. I'm really excited for "Jab Jab Jab Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuck..  He gives great examples from real posts in social media about what businesses are doing right/wrong in their quest for helping their ideas spread. More importantly, he shares the science of how and why we need to treat different social media platforms differently.

This post from 2006 is equally true today.  Godin discusses subtle truths and subtle traps that are not normally discussed when helping companies tell their story.

My key takeaway is the reminder that great stories are not made for the masses....great stories are designed for your small 'tribe' who will passionately spread it to the masses.

I recently wrote an exploration about Transmedia Storytelling as the future of digital marketing. A lot of the thinking behind this piece was related to my work at Limelight Networks and our recent pivot towards becoming the leader in digital presence management. The gist was this: our emerging multi-device behavior coupled with a growing “always on” existence requires that marketing messages are consistent across the devices. Transmedia storytelling is simply a vehicle by which to enable that.

 

But that brings up the question, “why storytelling?”

Seven steps to the perfect story is a great visual representation of how to build a story. This clearly explains the process of how students can construct their narrative and the types of characters they will use. I would definitely use this in my classroom to help students understand the process of creating a narrative.

That is so true Ken! We end up not being able to see the forest for the trees. I always encourage those working on their biz stories to get help from a colleague or friend for that outside perspective. That's what I do and it helps a lot!

I like this concept of allowing regular citizens to create a digital oral story and keeping at a public place.  My favorite tour so far in my life was the SIngapore museum.  They use recorded true stories to tie their exhibit stations together.  I spent 6 hours there.  I truly thought I would spend about 90 minutes.  Stories make everything come together in a way that makes us care more.
