What makes us reveal too much on Facebook and Twitter? And why do we do it?

Don't watch the videos. They are brainless and a waste of your time.  Yet, I do feel that there are nice nuggets in this article.

 

Basically, the article says that we over-share as an attempt to manage anxiety.  Also, "Beyond those originals in anxiety, though, it just feels good to brag about ourselves. According to a Harvard study, about 40% of our speech, and 80% of social-media posts, is devoted to telling others about what we feel or think. “Self-disclosure is extra rewarding,” said Diana Tamir, the Harvard neuroscientist who conducted the experiments with colleague Jason Mitchell."

How important is a 'call to action' in social media?

If you want action on social media, this recent data suggests that you should simply ask for it. This study does not mention if 'calls to action' lose potency if they are repeated too often.  My assumption is that Zarrella is already working on that data.  I strongly suggest following Dan Zarella if you are interested in the science of social media marketing.

Do you want your ideas to spread?  Godin suggests this short list of emotions that we should focus on.  Anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise.  I would suggest adding Trust (desire to connect), Lust, Desire (for material goods), and Pride.
