South Korea issues alert after government websites shut down - NOTE: NOT CONFIRMED

South Korea issues alert after government websites shut down - NOTE: NOT CONFIRMED | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
South Korea has issued a cyberattack alert after government websites shut down on the anniversary of the start of the Korean War.
Ken Morrison's insight:

These claims happen often and there is no way of confirming it at this point.  I am sharing this more as a reminder that S. Korea has been attacked two times this year by some organization.  It is becoming scary. S. Korea does not have many natural resources, so they 'bank' on technology and international trade agreements.  Any slowing down or shutting down of the computer systems is a big deal.

If you thought the National Security Agency's collection of Verizon phone-call data was bad, wait until you hear about PRISM, the seven-year-old, previously undisclosed classified government program that works with nine very major U.S.
Ken Morrison's insight:

I held back on sharing this because I was hoping that the public was over-reacting.

FYI: I can not keep up with all of the attacks on privacy, so I simply file them all under the Scoop.it tag of "SOPA" and/or "Privacy" or "Politics"  Most are tagged under all three, but I always use "SOPA"

Neither done it "spill the beans" for personal gain. They blew the whistle on what they felt was wrong to media and people should know about in my opinion .The guy that broke the Watergate scandal (Ellisworth ?? Sp ) was a whistle blower too but he vetted what material he released, he is now sticking up for them..These guys just released a massive amount..with out knowing all the content as I understand.
Ken Morrison's comment, August 28, 2013 3:26 PM
Hi Charlie. I like that you bring up the potential argument that it does not have to be a binary argument. There are many stages between 'keep your mouth shut' and use a megaphone/Tumblr account. I agree that some vetting and restraint may have given a bit more credibility to the concept of wanting to inform the people while loving the country.

Are We Better Off Without the Fairness Doctrine? | Blog | Tavis Smiley | PBS | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Ken Morrison's insight:

You can't understand new media without understanding 'somewhat old media'.  If you do not like television news today, it probably has a lot to do with the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine in the 1908's.  During that period, TV stations stopped thinking of news as a service and began moving the news department under the entertainment departments. The news was no longer a prerequisite for renewal of broadcast liscenses.  It became a tool to increase profits.  Thirty years later, we live with the results.
