Sir Ken Robinson On Discovering Your Passions | NPR OnPoint

Sir Ken Robinson On Discovering Your Passions | NPR OnPoint | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Interview with Tom Ashbrook

How education is jeopardizing creativity:

"I’m not blaming teachers for it. I’m not blaming school principals for it. I’ve worked in education my whole life and I work a lot with teachers in schools and I know they’re as concerned about this as I am and everbody else is. I think it’s to do with this culture of standardization. There is a view that the way we improve education is to make it more and more standardized. Many people in schools — particularly in this country, I’d say — are laboring under this sort of dead culture of continuous testing. And one of the results of it has been to reduce the curriculum, to narrow it. So a lot of the things that people, who may be be in their 40s or 50s, will remember from school — things like band and orchestra, putting on plays, lots of interesting after school activities — a lot of those things are being pushed out by this culture of standardized testing. It’s all done with an honorable purpose, I think — the intention is to raise standards, but the irony is it’s really not doing it. And more and more kids are pulling out of school. There’s more and more teachers, I feel, demoralized by it. And I know parents are very concerned about it too."

“While Shanghai is trying to be like America, America is trying to be more like China.”

thanks a lot, for yuor interesting opinión; the chlidren have that many things to their to culture.
Pamela D Lloyd's curator insight, June 25, 2013 3:21 PM

The primary focus of education should be helping children to reach their full potential. That can't be done through standardization, because kids don't come in standard packages; it can only happen when we recognize that we need to meet each child's needs.

Standards have their place, but only with respect to the quality of what we offer to children and in ensuring that every child is offered the best possible education. Standards that restrict children's opportunities and growth need to be eliminated and replaced with an approach that enriches the educational environment for everyone.

Bill and guidelines would help California schools teach about ‘fake news,’ media literacy

Bill and guidelines would help California schools teach about ‘fake news,’ media literacy | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

"The guidelines would be brief and could be taught at all grade levels, in any subject, although high-school government, history, English and journalism classes would be the most likely venues. As defined in the bill, media literacy “means the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, develop, produce, and interpret media and encompasses the foundational skills that lead to digital citizenship.” Digital citizenship “means a diverse set of skills related to current technology and social media, including the norms of appropriate, responsible, and healthy behavior.”

Australia’s kid-focused newspaper Crinkling News wants to teach media literacy to young readers

Australia’s kid-focused newspaper Crinkling News wants to teach media literacy to young readers | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Saffron Howden knew she was on the right track with Crinkling News, her Australian kid-focused weekly newspaper, within a few days of Donald Trump being elected. Even among Australian schoolchildren, there was a lot of trepidation about the implications of a Donald Trump presidency. One school introduced art therapy to help kids process their emotions.

The uncertainty that kids felt in November — much of which persists among both the young and not-so-young — underscored Howden’s initial motivation a year ago to create a newspaper written for the country’s young news consumers, ages 7 to 15. The world can be a scary place, she argues, and the country’s largest media companies were doing a poor job of explaining things in a way that kids could understand.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy -

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

Digital pedagogy does my head in.  I welcome any support that guides the incorporation of digital pedagogy into my classroom pedagogy.

Matthew Smith's curator insight, June 2, 3:28 AM

Digital pedagogy is such a complex field, but it doesn't have to be! The SAMR model, Bloom's taxonomy, frameworks for teaching literacy, numeracy and other capabilities, as well as this pedagogy wheel are great tools for helping us to get through the fluff and into what really matters - the learning experience. It's all about the pedagogy first - learner-centred, content-directed - and the apps we use to apply that pedagogy, second.

Stephanie Veldhuis's curator insight, June 3, 2:28 AM
I feel that this wheel is the best way I have been the SAMR model explained. When first introduced in word format, it can be difficult to understand the differences between each level. This is a clear representation of thinking which I think all teachers should have a look at and apply to their curriculum planning.
