A cheat sheet for Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘Lean In’

A cheat sheet for Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘Lean In’ | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Too busy to read the book? These highlights will get you through a water-cooler conversation.
Ken Morrison's insight:

Her book is selling well.  Some are concerned that her wealth is costing here credibility with regular women.  I will read it before making such statements.  I am sure that there is great knowledge in the book.  Until I get a chance to read this book, I will provide this cheat sheet.

My key takeaway is the interesting nugget that one test stated that girls perform worse when given a test that asked them to check M or F before taking the test.  It will be interesting to learn more.

Facebook Is Going To Ruin Your News Feed With Auto-Playing Video Ads

Facebook Is Going To Ruin Your News Feed With Auto-Playing Video Ads | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

In Facebook's quest to generate more revenue, it's going to muck up your News Feed with auto-playing videos, the FT reports.

Facebook is set to launch video advertising in its newsfeed in July...

Via Martin Gysler
Martin Gysler's comment, May 8, 4:53 AM
As I can see, nobody is really happy here ... maybe Facebook should review his strategy.
Mr Branson's curator insight, May 8, 5:42 AM

It will be interesting to see if Facebook or facebookers can make video and chat work? I don't think so. The business model of Facebook has always been 'social' interaction and now asking facebookers to watch video instead of chat or gossip may turn the tide for Facebook.

Sage Osterfeld's curator insight, May 8, 11:45 AM

Facebook taking a queue from porn sites. Great.

Is there anything more annoying that an autoplaying ad that you don't care about ruining whatever it is you're doing? Every time I run across one, it's usually below the scroll where I can see it so I'm like, "where the hell is that noise coming from?" (Then I scroll down and find the ad playing, right click on it and use my Ad Block plugin to keep that server from ever showing me an ad again.)

Should You Leave Facebook? EdgeRank Confusion, Promoted Posts, and Why Small Business Owners Are Exceedingly Frustrated

Should You Leave Facebook? EdgeRank Confusion, Promoted Posts, and Why Small Business Owners Are Exceedingly Frustrated | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Image via CrunchBase Facebook’s proprietary algorithm, known as EdgeRank, determines how or if a post on your business page appears in your fans’ timelines.
Ken Morrison's insight:

Ken's Key Takeaway:

EdgeRank is getting more and more frustrating.  It seems like we are throwing more and more time and energy at a bullseye that keeps moving. I feel that Google's updates are reasonable and usually improve the user experience for searchers.  I don't like how Facebook is systematically making it more difficult for page managers to reach the people who have clearly shown that they want to interact with our content.  The new advertisements for paid promotions right next to the increasingly foggy Insights window is like sandpaper on an open wound.

How do you feel?

Ken Morrison's insight:

I am sharing this link because I have shared links in the past about online gaming on social platforms.  Do you remember the times when we were invited to help on somebody's Farmville farm every time that we logged in?  Or play a zombie game.  Facebook moved those notices lower on our Newsfeed, and it is played a role in games losing momentum.  Here is a list of five reasons why the future of social gaming does not look as strong as it did one year ago.

Social games are no longer viral

-There's too many social games-They're getting too expensive-The profitability window is short-They're getting harder to monetize-They're still tied to Facebook...

Women are dominating in the digital "battle of the sexes." That's what the numbers say, anyway.
Ken Morrison's insight:

I am sharing this infographic and explanation because i discovered a blindspot.  I did not know that women also outnumber men in online gaming.  I realize that women are often forgotten when creating and marketing games, but I did not realize that they were the majority of online gamers.

Ken Morrison's insight:

Ken's Key Takeaway:

It is nice that Google learns from you but it is also dangerous.  Google and other search engiines and social networks decide what information is provided for you.  Pariser gives the example of two people searching for Egypt.  They took screen shots. One person's top results did not even indicate that there was an uprising.

An Eye On New Media 2013

Here is the 2013 version of my textbook that I curated for my students at Hannam University's Linton Global College.  Next year's vesion will include more of the teacher's notes that I share with my students.  I hope that it is helpful for you.  If you would like a free PDF version of the book, send me an email at kenmorrison30 (at) yahoo (dot) com or download it at the slideshare site.

I put a lot of work into the 2012 version.  I feel that it passed the test of time. There are some updates and additions in this version.  I also decreased the size of many images to make it less expensive to print.

Please please please support the real authors of this content.   I took great effort to give credit where it is due. I aimed to show my students how they could access enough free info on the web that was of equal or greater value than the wonderful information found in expensive textbooks. Feel free to share and please support the true authors of this book in any way you can (money, likes, blog comments, links, etc.) I am simply the currator of this content.

Thank you for sharing your awesome work! This curation definitely helped me a lot in understanding what new media trends are. Please keep the great work!
Min Kim's curator insight, April 8, 10:16 PM

켄모리슨 교수님이 자신이 제작한 2013년 교재 "An Eye On New Media" 를 공유했다.

My professor from Linton Global College, Ken Morrison, has made his 2013 version curated book "An Eye on New Media". This curated book contains much information about how current social media was established and how  our new meida trend will change over time. 2012 version of this book really helped me a lot understanding the fundamental knowledge about media.

Ken Morrison's insight:

This is a misleading headline.  Teens are exploring other programs (Instagram, etc, but they are keeping their Facebook accounts open and active.  They are spending less time on the platform though.  Does this truly hurt Facebook.  They have said that the plan is to transform from a platform to a layer.  I feel this trend is a natural stage for this progression.

Also, there is a WONDERFUL short video about how much data Facebook is keeping...and how to delete it.  Watch it and consider deleting your history.  It was interesting for me to see my search history since 2008.  It brought back some interesting memories.
