Want to resist the post-truth age? Learn to analyze photos like an expert would

Want to resist the post-truth age? Learn to analyze photos like an expert would | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

"“When photography was invented,” photo historian Vicki Goldberg once said, “it was thought to be an equivalent to truth. It was truth with a capital T.” But as viewers quickly learned, seeing isn’t always believing. Even in the early history of photography, hoaxes like the Cottingley fairies taught people to question the validity of the images they saw. Today, we’re well aware that photos can be digitally altered—which means that the public trusts the authority of photos, including journalistic images, a whole lot less."

Education for Death: The Making of Nazi–Walt Disney’s 1943 Propaganda Film Shows How Fascists Are Made | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

During World War II, Walt Disney entered into a contract with the US government to develop 32 animated shorts. Nearly bankrupted by Fantasia (1940), Disney needed to refill its coffers, and making American propaganda films didn't seem like a bad way to do it.

What it feels like to be the last generation to remember life before the internet

What it feels like to be the last generation to remember life before the internet | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Technology has a lot to answer for: killing old businesses, destroying the middle class, Buzzfeed. Technology in the form of the internet is especially villainous, having been accused of everything from making us dumber (paywall) to aiding dictatorships. Donald Trump immediately deleted Barack Obama's lengthy climate change information page.
Ken Morrison's insight:
I try to avoid politics except when directly embedded with technological or media changes.  Several well-respected, not-partisan tech podcasts have mentioned this potential new story lately. It appears that it was a high priority for the new administration.  Be  sure to read the whole article before getting too concerned, but this is a topic to watch.
