Education Needs a Digital-Age Upgrade | NY Times

Education Needs a Digital-Age Upgrade | NY Times | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

(Regarding Cathy Davidson's 2011 book, "Now You See It" -JL)

By Virginia Heffernan

"As Ms. Davidson puts it: “Pundits may be asking if the Internet is bad for our children’s mental development, but the better question is whether the form of learning and knowledge-making we are instilling in our children is useful to their future.”

"In her galvanic new book, “Now You See It,” Ms. Davidson asks, and ingeniously answers, that question. One of the nation’s great digital minds, she has written an immensely enjoyable omni-manifesto that’s officially about the brain science of attention. But the book also challenges nearly every assumption about American education.

"Don’t worry: She doesn’t conclude that students should study Photoshop instead of geometry, or Linux instead of Pax Romana. What she recommends, in fact, looks much more like a classical education than it does the industrial-era holdover system that still informs our unrenovated classrooms.

"Simply put, we can’t keep preparing students for a world that doesn’t exist. We can’t keep ignoring the formidable cognitive skills they’re developing on their own. And above all, we must stop disparaging digital prowess just because some of us over 40 don’t happen to possess it. An institutional grudge match with the young can sabotage an entire culture."

Ken Morrison's insight:

Cathy Davidson says that 65% of US grade school students will be working in careers that do not exist yet.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 6, 6:47 PM

Educators and others need to consider most jobs that children entering school today likely have not been invented or, for that matter, imagined.

Ken Morrison's insight:

I am hoping to try this out this weekend.  The big drawback is the inability to download the file.  There will be a paid version coming soon.

Robin Good's curator insight, January 31, 11:48 AM

Stevie brings MTV-style social video curation to the iPad | GigaOM

Stevie brings MTV-style social video curation to the iPad | GigaOM | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:

"Plenty of people are trying really hard to make online video more like TV. Israel-based web video curation startup Stevie is a little more specific about its goal: It wants online video to look like a hit show on MTV, back when MTV was still groundbreaking.

The app, which just became available in the App Store this weekend, features more or less the same UI and functionality as Stevie’s web application: a continuous stream of short online videos consisting of things your contacts share on Facebook and Twitter as well as popular clips shared by a number of celebrities, divided into small programming units.

There’s a “show” for personalized content, one for funny stuff, one for music videos and one for celebrity clips. And in case you get bored, Stevie also displays Facebook birthdays, the latest tweets and status updates of your contacts, and a whole bunch of other information in a sidebar and two scrolling tickers..."

Music on air: Koss reinvents headphones for the wireless internet age | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

For $500 you will never have to untangle your ear phone cords again.    Although, I can't count how many times my cords have saved me from losing a pair of earphones when biking.  I love the idea of leaving my ipod in my locker when at the gym or walking to the yard or other room without losing my place in a documentary.

Editor's Pick This is no redesign. It's a new product with a new purpose and a design meant to evoke emotion. And, if you have the patience to get used to a whole new experience, it's addicti...
Ken Morrison's insight:

No friends or fans.  You simply connect.  One drawback is that you don't connect just with an artist.  You have to connect with each song.  A bit redundant.  The horizontal scrolling bar will take some getting used to.  It has been a long time since I have logged into myspace (2007), but I really like how you can listen to radio stations that focus on your favorite artists.  I will definitely use it as a background window for mello or energetic accoustic music and a way to give social klout to artists who I appreciate.

Min Kim's comment, January 16, 1:19 AM
Thank you for sharing this, Prof. Ken. I did use Myspace from 2004 to 2007 and then I started to see Facebook growing and Myspace going down. It happened so fast and dramatic that I always wondered what Myspace executives were doing in order to counterattack Facebook. After reading this article, I decided to give it a try and see if it had potential to grow like Facebook!

"Our system of law doesn't acknowledge the derivative nature of creativity. Instead, ideas are regarded as property, as unique and original lots with distinct boundaries.

But ideas aren't so tidy. They're layered, they’re interwoven, they're tangled."

Será isso um MEME? .
