The Dawn of Modern Transmedia Storytelling: Star Wars

The Dawn of Modern Transmedia Storytelling: Star Wars | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Jason Hamilton:  "It's impossible to track down exactly when transmedia began to take effect as a major form of storytelling. As with any movement, it built up bit by bit, and is still gaining momentum. However, almost anyone with any knowledge in the area would agree that one of the biggest early influences was the film Star Wars and the pop culture phenomenon it started."

The Social Climb (and the Fear of Heights)

The Social Climb (and the Fear of Heights) | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Ken's Key Takeaway:

You will get many great nuggets of info in this article focusing on the continuing growth of social media and industries affected by it.

My favorite stat is:

Twitter is currently gaining more active users at a faster pace than Facebook.

Ken

The author's key takeaway: Get over your social media anxiety and get on the social ladder before you get left behind. The view from the ground is not nearly as thrilling as the view from the top.

We’re living in an age of connectedness like most of us would not have imagined even five years ago. We have amazing social networks available to every human and company on the planet. Brands can reach out and talk to consumers like never before.

"This is the end.  My only friend, The End."

-Jim Morrison

Actually, I have a pretty open mind about this.  The price seems reasonable and I am certain that they will give this feature some serious attention during the next 15 months.  I simply hope that the sharp decline in 'my' page's recent usage has no correlation with the manufactured need for this feature.  I am curious if others have experienced similar drop-offs in traffic.  Days before this announcement, I figured it was simply a temporariy algorithm glitch.

 oh yeah....back on topic...

Here's a walk-through of Facebook's new Promoted Posts.  It is pretty good, and I really like the 2nd to last step.  I love how you can promote previous posts.  I think this is the best way to balance organic and paid exposure.

Why Customer Anecdotes Can Tell You As Much as Metrics

Why Customer Anecdotes Can Tell You As Much as Metrics | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

I did not write this quality preview.  Karen Dietz shows why she has one of the top scores in all of Scoop.it.  She does a great job of showing relevance for each of her scoops with a personalized summary.

KM

Why customer stories are better than metrics http://t.co/aMqlaxwX Jeannie Walters talks about the gold in off-the-cuff customer comments...

Articles like this one are rare -- hardly anyone recognizes, much less writes about, how customer stories and anecdotes gain you far more than metrics, surveys, or focus groups. Usually focus groups are crafted info-gathering exercises rather than story sharing experiences where deep meaning can be gleaned.

OK -- so maybe a lot of people in these fields don't know the best narrative research and story evoking methodologies.  If they did however, I think we would see huge improvements in customer feedback, engagement, and better/deeper/richer material.

Back to the article -- this is a quick post but with good tips for thinking about customer anecdotes as critical information, and how to start gathering them. I really like that the author suggests once you have these anecdotes in hand, it's time to take action on them. Seems obvious, but it doesn't always happen.

Enjoy this post and I hope to see more like it in the future!

Top Tech Trends & People of 2012 (Focus on New Media Communications)

Here is the textbook that I created/curated for teaching my New Media Technology class during the Spring semester of 2012 at Hannam University's Linton Global College. I took great effort to give credit where it is due. I aimed to show my students how they could access enough free info on the web that was of equal or greater value than the wonderful information found in expensive textbooks. Feel free to share and please support the true authors of this book in any way you can (money, likes, blog comments, links, etc.) I am simply the currator of this content.

If you would like a free tablet-friendly PDF file, just email me at kenmorrison30 @ yahoo.com (no spaces)

P.S. There are some typos and honest mistakes in this textbook, but I am comfortable sharing it as is. I am excited to redesign it for next semester.

How Actions Become Stories - 5 Tips on Business Storytelling

How Actions Become Stories - 5 Tips on Business Storytelling | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

The following note is by Karen Dietz who has one of the top sites on Scoop.it

Business storytelling is more than a ‘Unique Value Proposition’ told on an elevator. It goes beyond giving an entertaining PowerPoint presentation. Your business story is made up of every action you take. The better you know your story, the easier it is to actively embody it.

I like this very quick read by colleague David Vanadia about business storytelling because of several key reminders:

You are ALWAYS telling a story as you go about your business. Your business 'story' is greater than your 'About Page' or a slick PPT. Focus on emotion -- people remember how you make them feel, not think.

It's easy to get tunnel-focused on a particular story or one particular story application (marketing) in business. Step back and keep your eye on the bigger story picture as David so eloquently says in this post.
