Linda Dougherty's curator insight, October 12, 2013 10:14 AM

Have started showing students during Google presentation tutorials how to outline their presentations like they always do with those bulleted lines on the slides.  Then take those sentences, change them into titles, and put one title on each slide. Select one image per slide. If needed, add URL links. Add the works cited for the image in tiny print at the bottom of the slide. Move those outlined bulleted points to the note section or toss into a document to print out for a group presenetation.

No more slides crowded with text and 4 images! No more students sleeping in the classroom while their classmates read from the Smartboard.

Susan Kay Daniels's curator insight, January 13, 9:30 AM

This is a PowerPoint presentation that would have sent my former employers into shock. They had no imagination whatsoever. However, Eugene Cheng clearly has wonderful artistic skills and knows how to present them. In addition, he clearly has a nice budget to work with. These kind of beautiful graphics don't come at low price. I thoroughly enjoyed glancing through this presentation and plan to use it as inspiration for future projects.

Warmly,

Susan Daniels

While beautiful Powerpoint may seem like an oxymoron  this slideshow proves it is possible.

But Does this all work?

Here is a video created  by my students who practice what I preach (almost) every day. They created this video and  Facebook page to answer a real-life recruitment & retainment challenge.

My students at Hannam University's Linton Global College use media and video to improve their writing skills, teamwork skills, critical thinking skills, international advertising skills, and project management skills.  They also have fun learning while working hard.

Communication is much more than just language skills. It is about designing a message for a target audience and 'call to action' in mind.

Special thanks to Cati, Kyla, Min, & Lelah for their extra work on this project!  Additional (Equal) thanks to the LGC Social Media team of Sang, Jody, Kim, Denis, Kate & Veronica!

Why Kids Need Schools to Change

Why Kids Need Schools to Change | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
The current structure of the school day is obsolete, most would agree. Created during the Industrial Age, the assembly line system we have in place now has little relevance to what we know kids actually need to thrive. Most of us know this, and yet making room for the huge shift in the system that's necessary has been difficult, if not impossible because of fear of the unknown.
Ken Morrison's insight:

The author really hopes for change in these five areas:
PROJECT BASED LEARNING.

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT.

SCHEDULING.

CLIMATE OF CARE.

PARENT EDUCATION.

Why do deceased friends move up on our 'Top 9' friends list? This writer has a theory.

Why do deceased friends move up on our 'Top 9' friends list? This writer has a theory. | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Ken Morrison's insight:

This amateur writer has put together a pretty good framework for trying to understand Facebook's secret algorithm for choosing the nine friends that it advertises as our top friends.  FYI:  all visitors see a different list of nine.  If you and I have a mutual friend, we will each see a different list of nine 'top friends' when we visit his wall.  Here is the list:

1.  A increased importance placed on photos and tags.

2.  A gentle nudging on Facebook's behalf to remind me of people whom I interact withsporadically but not regularly.

3.  People I have had relatively recent interactions with now being given priority over family members (I don't have anyone listed as a "close friend," so I'm not sure if that has been affected or not).

Is Facebook making us forget? Study shows that taking pictures ruin memories

Is Facebook making us forget? Study shows that taking pictures ruin memories | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Cultural commentators and itinerant moaners have often complained that our obsession with taking pictures stops us from experiencing the moment, and now scientists are saying that our snap-happy habits may also be ruining our memory.
Ken Morrison's insight:

This study says that in general, taking photos decreases our memory of events.  It also finds that zooming in on objects seems to decrease this effect.  Some variables that need to be examined further include the frequency of viewing our photos after the event, as well as how many times your social network comments/likes a photo if posted online. Note: I added the last suggested research variable
