Trust Me, I'm Lying. Ryan Holiday talks to Mitch Joel About How To Manipulate The Media | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Welcome to episode #369 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. There are certain people and brands who know how to manipulate the media. Not in a nefarious or evil way (those kinds exist as well).
Ken Morrison's insight:

I am glad that I was reminded about this book.  Great conversation between two masters who know the business well.

I was also reminded of "Help A Reporter Out"

Life and death? No, Much more Important than that; How Sport turned into Big Business and a Global Obsession | University of Oxford Podcasts - Audio and Video Lectures | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Matthew Engel, Journalist and Sports Writer and 2011 News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media gives the first of the 2011 series on Broadcast media, entitled; Please, mister, can we have our ball back?
Ken Morrison's insight:

I truly enjoyed this podcast about the recent history of sports and culture and broadcasting. It is 50 minutes long.  My favorite part is how in the 1960s, so soccer players refused to wear Adidas shoes for profit.  Althought they were offered a payment that would have equalled one year's salary a few years earlier, they hated the feeling of selling out.  There are important parts of this podcast that help us explore how, when and why war vocablulary entered the world of sports. This is an excellent discussion about the history of sports in the second half of last century from one of the top sports reporters in Europe.

Michael Stelzner | Social Media Examiner

Michael Stelzner | Social Media Examiner | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

This morning in one very short bike ride, I was able to learn many great tips from two industry giants Michael Stelzner and Brian Solis.  I love this aspect of my life.  Podcasts have changed my learning in so many ways.

Ken's Key Take-Away:

All blogs should:
1) Have a headline that makes people interested and want to learn more

2) Be Skimmable and Scannable.

In the first few moments, Brian Solis will tell you specifically how he teaches people how to improve their blog traffic.

SPOS #317 - Get Writing With Jeff Goins

SPOS #317 - Get Writing With Jeff Goins | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Do you think you have a book in you? A blog? A blog post? A clever tweet? Do you love the industry that you serve? Do you write about it? There's no doubt about it, writing will make you smarter, better and more informed about your life (both personally and professionally). The problem is that most people don't know where to start. They think that writers have some kind of special, unique gift. Jeff Goins can help you. I read his e-book, You Are A Writer (So Start Acting Like One) and it gave me a ton of insight. Ricardo Bueno was kind enough to make an e-intro, and I was thrilled that Jeff agreed to come on to the podcast. Jeff has since published his first book, Wrecked, and continues to blog regularly about how to write and how to become a better writer. Enjoy the conversation...

The Memory Palace

The Memory Palace | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

I could not be more happy that Nate DiMeo is getting more funding to create more podcast episodes of The Memory Palace.  It is my favorite podcast because it is a great use of podcasts to help us remember our past history and forgotten people or aspects of historical figures.  Often in less than 10 minutes, DiMeo can take me back in time and appreciate something I never knew about my culture's history.  For example, Episode 45 talks about the era before recorded sound when people would spend big bucks to hear a song or set on time by a favorite singer.  It really helps me appreciate my iPhone and MP3 player.

When Patents Attack! | This American Life

When Patents Attack! | This American Life | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it
Why would a company rent an office in a tiny town in East Texas, put a nameplate on the door, and leave it completely empty for a year?

An inside look at the ugly world of patent trolls!  They want to steal the right for us to back up our data over the internet.  Other patent trolls have attacked a non-profit organization which tries to help physically challenged people use the internet. A third feels that it has the patent for wifi. They want every coffee shop and possibly homeowners to pay them if they use wifi.

Ken Morrison's insight:

This podcast is old (2011) but insightful and important.  We are giving up our future. We are taking the power, profits and promise of innovation from the innovators and giving it to lawyers and the like. Patent Trolls will kill innovation. Two years later, it is not any better. :<

How To Be Business Awesome (And UnAwesome)

How To Be Business Awesome (And UnAwesome) | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

A great discussion between Scott Stratten and MItch Joel about the good, the bad, and the ugly of social media influence between businesses and customers.  They discuss Chick Fillet, Klout, and the fact that Stratten once had more "klout" than President Obama.  That was the day he stopped caring about Klout because he realized it was a joke. Speaking of jokes, they have a fun discussion of humor used wisely near the end of this podcast.

Ken's Key Take-Away:

"There is a difference between an audience and influence."

U.S.A. Used Drones To Monitor US Citizens

U.S.A. Used Drones To Monitor US Citizens | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

How do you feel about the USA using drones to monitor US citizens?  I don't agree with Brossart, but I am concerned that this has not been a bigger news story in the news.  I am aware that I may be a bit out of the loop over here in South Korea, but I would expect this to be a bigger news story.  This episode of On The Media is full of great insight including extreme measures to protect Olympic sponsorships, Syrian rebels appealing to donors through videos online, and a self proclaimed media manipulator tells all.

On The Media - Political Misdirection, A Raid on Palestinian TV, and More | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

I am very happy with this new podcast that I found by Bob Garfield.  It does a great job at communicating how the media is communicating with us.  This is my most valuable addition to my audio learning resources this year!

The White House's attempt to distract us from bad economic news, a new FCC disclosure rule that may be meaningless, and a fight over broadcast frequencies in the Middle East.
