How Email Newsletters Became a Preferred Source of News for Millennials

How Email Newsletters Became a Preferred Source of News for Millennials | New media environment | Scoop.it

Readers have started to gravitate more towards the individual curator compared to primary publications. 66% of journalists indicate that readers started to follow them first as journalists or as a person. In short, traditional news outlets are no longer the primary source for news-seekers, especially if they are born in the 80’s or after. And why is that? First, there is the issue of fake news. Social media companies have yet to find ways to prevent the spread of fake news on their platforms. Second, low-quality content with click-baity headlines seems to overtake many users’ news feeds these days. This is where personal newsletters come in.

The digital media age is all about the past: “The Internet is not an extension of television” | New media environment | Scoop.it
We’re in a major media transition, and now we’re seeing what that is. No, the Internet is not an extension of television — it doesn’t unite the world in one big, great network the way we kinda thought it would. That’s because we’re TV kids, looking at the Internet. It’s something else.

I’m not saying the Internet is bad, I’m saying it’s biased toward memory and individuation.

Thune Seeks Answers from Facebook on Political Manipulation Allegations

Thune Seeks Answers from Facebook on Political Manipulation Allegations | New media environment | Scoop.it
U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, today asked Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to answer questions following reports that company employees actively suppressed news stories on topics of interest to politically conservative users of the social media platform.

“Facebook must answer these serious allegations and hold those responsible to account if there has been political bias in the dissemination of trending news,” said Thune on sending the letter. “Any attempt by a neutral and inclusive social media platform to censor or manipulate political discussion is an abuse of trust and inconsistent with the values of an open Internet.”

What I learned about journalism at the New York Post

What I learned about journalism at the New York Post | New media environment | Scoop.it
Without a doubt, I had just ruined these two men’s day. But what didn’t occur to me until years later was how that interaction may have shaped the way they thought about reporters, and the entire news media, for the rest of their lives. Ten years later, when their president told them that journalists were “enemies of the American people,” and “mainstream media” was pumping out “fake news,” might my daylight notebook-and-camera ambush have made it more likely they’d nod their heads and say, Hell, yeah?

Globally, individuals on average spent 456.1 minutes each day consuming media last year; in 2017, it’s expected to decline slightly to 455.8 minutes. Photos taken by year, film and digital

In the midst of the 3.5 trillion photos that have ever been taken it's easy to forget that the shoebox or album of old photos we have at home is incredibly fragile and special. Every 2 minutes today we snap as many photos as the whole of humanity took in the 1800s. In fact, ten percent of all the photos we have were taken in the past 12 months. And yet, there are still more physical photos hidden in our shoeboxes, hanging on our walls or lost in an album than there are digital photos littering our hard drive. These precious photos of the past 200 years tell us who we are and where we come from. So grab hold of that photo of you as a kid or of your grandparents' wedding and realize just how special it is.
