Network Research - Network Research is a weblog gathering and archiving information concerning the use of networks in new media / contemporary art.
Monika Fleischmann's insight:

Juneau Projects resurrected an Atari typeface to visualize written passages describing a series of interlocking environments gradually moving from the countryside to the city. Within the gaming format of the work, users encounter various network points in the floorboards that make up the theatrical ground, and during their journey are invited to collect computer parts – a wooden keyboard, a mouse - made of fur and bones – fashioned from natural elements. Users navigate a fictional narrative and landscape akin to the actual installation and city in which they sit and also have the option to listen to the texts via the inbuilt computerized speech of the Windows software reader, a further conflation of the natural and man-made via technological advances…For SMART Project Space, Juneau Projects has worked in references to locations in Amsterdam where a collision between nature and culture plays a key role. They have also realized adapted versions of the hobbyist landscaped work stations, which will be overgrown with moss (a good indicator of air pollution).

Ikeda is only inspired by science

Ikeda’s composition techniques are inspired by logical sources, such as algorithms and principles of quantum mechanics. His parameters of composition are built on scientific principles and not on individual expression. His music is not a commentary about science and quantum physics – this is a deep misunderstanding. Mr. Jones is right, with his notion, that Ikeda has little to say about advanced sciences. But Mr. Jones is wrong, when he expects Ikeda to have the intention to say something about science. No, Ikeda is only inspired by science, because in creating his work, he is confronted with the troubles of classical symmetry and harmony – an artistic struggle, which he shares with science and contemporary architecture (e.g. Greg Lynn). In fact, that harmony and symmetry have been universal principles of the arts for centuries – from architecture to music – can be traced back by insightful studies, such as Hermann Weyl (Symmetry, 1952) or István Hargittai (Symmetry. A Unifying Concept, 1994), and from Gibbs-symmetry (J. W. Gibbs, Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics, 1902) to Wigner-symmetry (1959), and the mathematical concept of Lie groups (i.e. representations of continuous symmetry). ......

Monika Fleischmann's insight:

Pic-me - fly to the locations where users send posts
Online project

Growing a Following from Nothing: My Social Media Strategy

Growing a Following from Nothing: My Social Media Strategy | [New] Media Art Education & Research | Scoop.it

There are thousands of articles that have been written about ways to grow your social media following (some of which by myself), but one of the things that most articles fail to cater for is actually growing them from nothing.

We all know how Coca Cola, Pepsi and Oreo have built enormous social media followings, but what if you’re not a huge brand? How about if you’ve just set up a blog and had no real online presence beforehand?

This is what I’m going to focus on – the first 3-4 months of your social media campaign.

But very few can improve your conversion rate as much as case studies can.

Case studies have a few big benefits:

All of these benefits are important, but the last one—in particular.

Trust is one of the most important factors in conversion rate optimization....

TechFocus III: Caring for Software-based Art | TechFocus

Monika Fleischmann's insight:

Software-based artworks have been gradually entering collections over the past three decades. However, the preservation of works created in this medium has proved challenging for collection caretakers due to its relative scarcity and perceived complexity. Designed to educate collection professionals of all disciplines, this two-day workshop and symposium will bridge this knowledge gap and present some of the challenges, risks, and the state of current practice in the care of software-based artworks, with contributions from conservators, curators, art historians, archivists, artists, and computer scientists.
Topics will include the history of software-based art and its underlying technology, code analysis, documentation methods, risk assessment, storage and access, and strategies for long-term preservation. Four practical exercises will introduce participants to the concepts of coding, version control as a preservation tool, disk imaging and emulation.
It is hoped that the program will raise awareness and advance the development of standards and best practice in the care and conservation of this new genre of contemporary art. The workshop will also provide a forum for professionals to gather and debate these emerging preservation strategies on an international level.
The workshop is made possible by the generous support of the Foundation of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC), the National Endowment of the Arts and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
